I can also appreciate the tax increase aspect. People feel victimized (it's hard not too when money is taken from you) and in that realization of victimization they look for someone to provide them the seemingly simple answers that they want to hear... which opens them to be brainwashed. It's easy to support or deny something until it effects you personally and then it's easy to overcompensate in your attempt to deal with whatever is upsetting you.

My Mom (religious - not particularly political) is heavily influenced by my Dad (non-religious - highly fiscally conservative). My dad is frustrated in general with the country (seeing the Republicans as the only ones trying to be fiscally responsible) and my Mom repeats the crap my Dad says to her (which he is really saying to himself in order to convince himself he's still a Republican). I know she doesn't actually believe because I can easily convince her otherwise. But my dad is a different story, he likes to argue about facts which are hard to argue against in a specific context and it turns into a more of a priority situation where he generally feels something is way more important than it actually is which ends up blinding him from the big picture.

When I was in Iraq, we considered them the best-sourced, least-biased Arabic news source. And here in DC, I watch AJE when I watch cable news (which isn't often; I prefer reading news to watching it). They're biased against Israel, obviously, which mainly comes out in their opinion programming, but their actual news coverage is dead-level straight, and competent. The best thing about them is that they cover the world in terms of natural disasters, politics, science, sports, etc., without any discernable slant. I just ignore their Israeli-Arab coverage (it's a very small slice of Al Jazeera English).

As for my man Al Gore, I don't see hypocrisy in taking advantage of current tax laws to save money while calling for higher taxes on your income bracket. He'd pay those higher taxes, too; he just doesn't want to be the sucker who pays them while everyone else in his bracket shirks.
