To be fair, they could be controlled by women pretending to be thin.

The picture they chose to illustrate this article seems to prove the opposite point.

Also, this is the best line in TFA:    Naturally, "only humanoid avatars that were not covered by fur were included in the analysis."

The male avatars make up for it by building penises everywhere.

Well if I had a body like that I'd show off twice as much skin.

Second Life is still a thing? How quaint.

Didn't anyone go out on New Year's Eve? Same thing applies IRL -- the women wear the tiniest thing they can get away with while the men cover damn near every inch of skin with multiple layers.

THIS.

I know too many fat woman, more than fat men I know, who would rather live out a fantasy in a game than actually try to clean house and find a real partner. Instead they try to have personal relationships with their pets in turn becoming all nasty and creepy. I refuse to do repair work for a few because their home is disgusting and they don't shower. Nasty, and sadly too common.

New Year's Eve & St.Patricks's Day are for amateurs & frat boys that puke on their girlfriends shoes then wreck daddy's car.

This isn't news. What IS news, at least to me, is that people still play Second Life.

Second Life wasn't relevant ten years ago, and it sure as hell isn't relevant now. How much money is somebody paying for their recent advertorials?

Last time I checked (a few years ago, haven't been back) Second Life was over run by furies. It amazes me that their are people on there that still pretend to be human.

I always play as a female in any game that gives me the choice.

Wouldn't it be a lot more worthwhile to study the skin-coverage of actual people? Then you could analyze how skin coverage relates to age, weight, attractiveness, culture, race, etc. I really don't see the point of studying avatars, especially when you don't know anything about the real people behind them.

I remember reading a site full of stories and testimonials from wives and husbands who had lost their spouses to Second Life. These people spent almost all their waking hours in the game until they lost their jobs or their relationships, or both.

You have to be somewhat off in the head to be willing to trade in your real life (however crappy it may be) for substitute in a fantasy world.

maybe this is just something that is true in the various areas I've visited and/or lived in (Austin, Houston, Dallas, Ithaca NY, NYC, all over San Diego, LA, Portland...well, maybe not Portland) but don't females in "real life" show twice as much skin as men too? So why would that mean it is a dude playing a girl?

That said, I took a video art class last semester, and the hottest girl in that class - a gorgeous surfer-girl with a perfect tan, perfect cans, gorgeous legs...anyway, I showed up in the computer lab to do some work, found her there...playing second life. I didn't even know until that point that the game still existed. Yet there she was, unashamedly playing it. Guess the moral is, don't assume that just because the avatar is a weird furry, female, whatever thing (her "avatar" was human, but with a tail) that it's a filthy 400lbs dude stuffing cheetos into his mouth. It may be a gorgeous girl that isn't a furry in real life, is smart and highly social, but that just likes having an avatar with a tail.

My City of Heroes main was dressed like a sexy schoolgirl with a cybernetic arm. I got so much free crap with that character and I never even pretended to be anything but a guy playing a woman. I didn't volunteer my actual gender, but almost no ever asked.

What's amusing to me is that everyone posting so far keeps referring to "playing" Second Life, which no Second Lifer would ever say. "It's not a game, asshat it's a second life!"

This. I never go out New Years Eve. One because of the cops and two because most people out that night don't know how to act in bars.

Baically the same people that used to get together in  a basement and play D&D.  Wifey does a lot of SL and honestly the attraction seems oto be that you can essentially buy a "sim" decorate it the way you want and tun an impromtu RPG on damn near any theme you like.  Yes many of them end up being sex-themed but that's human nature innit?  How much of the internet's bandwidth is used for porn delivery?

Personally I object less to the time she spends on Sl than the time she used to use playing WOW  because at least there is some creativity required to play in SL rather than skinner-box style repetition and button-mashing

I did that once in an MMO and got tired of all the "guy crap" that guys do to/around/say to female chars in those games. Afterwards, the only fem toons I played were intentionally designed to be as ugly as the creator allowed for, and gave them unashamedly "guy-ish" names

/pig faced ugly dwarf female named "Hotdump"
//fem orc named "Farteater"
///everyone assumed I was a dude, funny how that works

I ran into a perfect example of this and it really was from a woman (or at least someone with a female voice). We had just entered a high level raid in DDO and buffs were going off all over the place. Not all characters can cast all buffs, those who can cast various buffs normally distribute them to the rest of the party.

One female character with a female voice says that she has sexy armor on purpose, please no stoneskin. (Very few buffs in the game have any visible effect but stoneskin does--and the result most certainly isn't sexy.) Some wizard doesn't get the message and hits her with a stoneskin anyway--and she's rather upset! She's chewing him out until someone drops a camouflage spell on the party. There's a minor bug in the game that only the last appearance-altering spell has a visible effect. The effect is nowhere near as unsexy as stoneskin and it's a pretty short duration spell anyway. By the time we were actually ready to go it had worn off and she was back to her normal looks.
