The plastic is the start of a planet wide pile of recyclable garbage.  Someone already beat us to the punch on ruining Mars.

From TFA: "The translucent shape is reminiscent of a flower's pistils"

And: No, no it isn't.

The fact that we have a working craft exploring another planet and sending us back pictures and scientific information is amazing enough for me; looks like some martian anal sex devil poop to me.....

They could use that fancy-schmancy laser and take a shot at this "flower" and see what kind of data they pick up. That would help determine the composition.

If it has vastly abundant rare earth metals, then that might get some attention.

Did I miss something?

Why on EARTH did they send a black and white camera to Mars?

Not only that but they didn't take a microphone either.

Because transmitting a black and white photo requires less bandwidth than a color photo. Something to consider when you're transmitting a signal from something that has to be energy efficient across 100.7 million km (62.6 million miles).

There are of course, color cameras on board as well.

Looks like maybe gypsum or some sort of quartz mineral formation.

FTA: "They stitched together the black-and-white images, filled in the gaps in the Martian sky and colorized the scene to reflect what an observer on Mars might see."

Meh, diamonds are cheap and easy to make or find on earth. It would be of more interest if it was an unknown material, maybe a new element for the old periodic chart. If such an element existed and it had the properties of a super conductor then we would be likely to mount a manned scientific and survey mission to Mars. Hell maybe even establish a mining base.

We will only have bases or colonies on other planets when there proves to be something worth exploiting.

I was thinking it was something from Robbie Robertson, but I'm not finding it. I'm not sure how the Stevie Ray Vaughan song is relevant.

I post a reference to the famous Stevie Ray Vaughan song called "The sky is crying"

You are confused.... why?

Found it in Sonny got caught in the moonlight. I'm guessing the comment wasn't song related though.

The most boring and mundane explanation I can think of is that it is an inclusion of quartz-type rock, possibly deposited by flowing water which carried it from elsewhere.

The least boring and mundane explanation that explains why it is bright, shiney, somewhat pearly and oddly-shaped is that it is a fossil shell. Now that would be news. It would prove that Mars had a lot of water, that it about a billion years or so of life and that some of the life evolved parallel to Earth life at least as far as corals or molluscs.

I think it would be very worthwile to winkle that pearly object out of the rock and see if it is geological or biological in origin. I wish they would discover Mars life already. I hate being kept on tenterhooks for thirty years or more.

I imagine that we'd be off to Mars in a jiff if they found a seashell there. Clams can be far more valuable than diamonds if you are hungry. Mars Oysters might have Mars pearls, one of which would easily be the most valuable rock in the known universe.

To hell with diamonds! I want a baroque Mars pearl the size of my thumb.

If they find one they can name it the "Great Gazoo" and it would be the coolest thing ever.

Crap like this wouldn't happen if they'd heeded my advice to not make Curiosity's loose parts the same color as Martian soil.

Looks like the outer surface of the rock got scraped by something's claws as it was scrambling over it. They should just follow the footprints.

You're welcome NASA.

It looks like a quartz crystal. I can tell by some of the pixels. And I live in the Rocky Mountains.
