And oh, wool sweaters made of cheap yarn itch. Good yarn does not itch. What defines cheap yarn when it comes to sweater? Short length of fiber being used to spin the wool. The fiber threads then stick out more and trigger the itch response against your skin more. And, as short length fibers are generally far more coarse, that's even worse.

Try a good sweater and it's not an issue.

For those who ask why such fiber is used in yarn it's because short, coarse fiber lengths like that are well wearing. They make amazingly warm, long lasting, thick socks. And, as your feet tend to be less tender and sensitive, they don't itch usually. Also, because of how much friction they are exposed to on feet as opposed to the rest of the body, they build up a felted layer both on the inside and outside of the sock, which helps keep your feet even warmer and helps keep moisture out (but with the bonus of moisture being wicked away from your skin because wool breathes well). Good wool socks are awesome hiking socks

Most likely because Merino is a cheap, over bred wool (they won the wool wars, and it's been downhill for that breed every since). A good Shetland wool would be better for things like that, but they don't mass produce Shetland wool garments of that style.

Fun facts. Scientists in Munich doing things like looking for biomarkers of cancer went through a cycle of finding human keratin proteins, and then mouse keratin proteins and then sheep keratin proteins in repeated experiments.
Upon thoughtful analysis it turned out that the human keratin proteins were detected in September, the Mouse Keratin proteins in late October and the sheep Keratins in December.
The September result was human contamination from all those scientists returning from their sunny holidays, peeling their overexposed skin. The October results were due to the field mice scurrying in from out of the cold and generally contaminating the labs, and the sheep Keratins were from the woollen sweaters scientists started wearing once the weather turned cold.

This happened once the technologies got that sensitive to notice such things.

Cheap wool itches. Fine wool like lambswool, marino, alpaca and cashmere does not. But none of this has anything to do with the FA beyond a stupid title.

I have an allergy to wool (it bites me) but not to sheep fleece, so I was hoping that the article really was about why sweaters are itchy. I am so disappoint.
