We're going to need to invent sophisticated traffic control artificial/virtual intelligences before flying cars ever become realistic. Humans cannot handle cars that stay on the ground without killing tens of thousands of people per year. Add the vertical dimension and the nightmare expands substantially. Flying cars may very well be possible, but only if computers are driving them and we're just along for the ride.

Most pilots are maniacs. In 20 years of flying, I've seen more bizarre and terrifying behavior than I ever would have believed. Flying cars that are not 100% automated would be a disaster of epic proportions.
