In Imperial Japan, they believed that surrender was the most dishonorable thing you could do in battle, which was why they treated POWs so horribly and were so fanatically suicidal about fighting to the death or begged to be killed for 'shaming the emperor' when captured. I never really understood why early sci-fi modeled their aliens on Asians until I read about it, they had this real WTFery view of the world.

I worked with a woman whose husband survived a japanese POW camp. He hated the Japanese with a burning hatred the rest of his life.
