My mother remarried a man very close to the inner workings of the House.

He has told me things only to have them come true. So I told him not to tell me what happened next but then this is the news that came. He laughed, but I told him that it was a lie. So I thought I had him until he showed me links and I had to apologize. I told him will never ask him to tell me nothing again until checking Fark first-thing every day. Then I found out he is a Farker!

My mother is a whore.

Who else would want the job?

Also as the Dems just showed, we're hitting the point on some issues where the Dem minority plus moderate Republicans (or those worried about reelection) can pass bills. You don't even need to deal with Boehner anymore. You get public support for your bill and then write it in such a way the moderate Reps will vote for it (and their constituents will pressure them to vote for it). Whereas if you try to deal with the Speaker you end up finding out he can't pass shiat. So dealing with the Speaker is not all it is cracked up to be.

Strategically speaking, they should have gone with someone from New York, New Jersey, or Maryland. This decision does nothing but perpetuate the polarity in this clusterfark of a 2 party system we have. I take pride in "wasting" my vote on an Independent or Third Party.....

Did anyone see Cantor's feature expose on 60 minutes? Cringe inducing. I think even the GOP realize he's better doing the dirty work behind the scenes and not being the face of the caucus. Meanwhile, Boehner makes a perfectly fine and willing scapegoat.

2013-01-03 02:09:20 PM
Anyone seen a full roll call of who abstained from voting or voted for someone other than Pelosi or Boehner? It's sad how many people honestly still believe you can somehow be an officer of an organization you're not a member of; it should be pretty obvious for "strict constructionists" that the founders would have considered officers by their natures to be members of the organization they have authority within, and considering all other members of the House are elected by a popular vote by the citizenry (the only offices requiring direct election originally in the Constitution) having the person running it be chosen from outside their membership would run counter to the very point of the House.

Look, I realize this is Fark, but the man's name is pronounced "Bay-nher". Let's not be a bunch of dicks, and go off half-cocked at every headline that makes some sort of juvenile reference to the man's name. He's third in line for the Presidency, which is hard to achieve. It's a great distance to rise, and they'll probably erect monuments to him in Ohio.

And while we're at it, sure, the man drinks. Who doesn't? But I don't want to spend the next 2 years talking about Boehner vomiting White Russians. Let's have a bit of respect.

Shaggy_C: Meh. Speaker of the House is a largely ceremonial position these days. Senate Minority leader, now there's the real power in the US Federal government. No bill can even get a vote without getting the green light from the minority party first.

I'm thinking that second in the succession line to POTUS (right behind VP) is just a bit more important than a "ceremonial" position. Being Speaker is more than just a title.

FTFA: "So has former Secretary of State Colin Powell (you do not have to be a member of the House to be elected speaker)."

I never knew that the Speaker of the House could be somebody who was NOT elected to said house. That makes absolutely no sense at all since that could put somebody who was not elected by the general citizenry in charge of the very representatives who WERE elected by them, plus puts that same person very high up in the POTUS succession line (see above).

Mick Mulvaney and Raul Pearce abstained. They voted for a variety of people, some of them not in the house, but Eric Cantor and Justin Amash both got at least 2 votes.

I hope the Republicans not just going off half-cocked by making Boehner their speaker again.  I hope they stiffen their spines and rise to the occasion. But we didn't really think Boehner would just give up and limp home, would he, even if the teabaggers won't stand up for him? As the head of the Republicans in Congress, can't go soft here. He needs to work really hard--on through the the whole term if necessary--and keep hammering at it. I mean, when the next debt limit debate comes in a couple of weeks, I don't care if the Republicans in Congress have to pitch a tent right there on the Congressional floor and spend the whole night there, waking up with wood floors as their beds, and filibustering this thing if they have to. Yeah, it's true that Fartbama has threatened to veto their efforts and yeah, the President's veto pen is mighty, but by standing firm Boehner can get Fartbongo to prick up his ears and listen and know that the Republicans are serious. But it's not enough to for the speaker to just erect procedural barriers--he needs to steel his resolve and hit those wimpy, chubby Democrats hard, like a semi truck, until they just give up and go home with their heads drooped. Don't dicker with them, just fire a budgetary rocket at 'em. I'm not saying he should get too cocky, but this is no time to spare the rod--if he does, taxpayers will get the shaft once again, so he needs to show a rock-hard commitment, bone up on the budget issues, and drive it home. I know that the Republicans in Congress don't have great opinion pole favorability numbers right now, but one way to get it up is for the Republicans to give American families a full salute and throw each of them a bone--daddy, mommy, grandparents, and all the kids. If they do that one morning, wouldn't you have to think that when it's in the newspaper the next morning, glory will be spread to all the Republicans?!

Something to think about!

Uncle Arthur gave me hope as a scared little gay boy. He was so obviously flaming, and yet he was completely accepted by his family and beloved by his niece. I was convinced I would one day lose my family and be hated by them forever when I eventually came out, so it was reassuring to see an example of a gay man who still had his family's respect and love.

Plus, he was an uber-powerful Warlock who pushed-around the uptight anti-magic Darren and teased him mercilessly. Most of the humour of Bewtiched came from watching the conservative priggish Darren being befuddled by his more powerful and intelligent wife, and it was the same with Uncle Arthur - a witty gay man in a position of power above a weaker straight guy was just not something you saw on tv.

Actually, I'm not sure it's a dynamic you see on television today, come to think of it. Bewitched was rather subversive.

/I just watched a Bewitched marathon on New Year's Day. I hadn't seen it in decades - it was awesome. I'm going to buy the dvd sets now.

ha-ha-guy:
Also as the Dems just showed, we're hitting the point on some issues where the Dem minority plus moderate Republicans (or those worried about reelection) can pass bills. You don't even need to deal with Boehner anymore. You get public support for your bill and then write it in such a way the moderate Reps will vote for it (and their constituents will pressure them to vote for it). Whereas if you try to deal with the Speaker you end up finding out he can't pass shiat.

Well, yes, it's widely recognized that the House needs an enema, but there are more diplomatic ways of phrasing it.

Crazy isn't it.

I've always enjoyed the political discussions on Fark because it allows for honest dialog between people of various backgrounds all across (mostly) the United States. Everything from intelligent comments and well-thought-out responses to brain-drain level stupidity. I feel it helps give me a pretty fair pulse of the nation.

The fun part is taking the political discussions from Fark and replaying them in the real world. There have been many times I was able to counter a particular argument because it was already discussed in length on Fark.

Additionally, because the content is all fairly visible and concentrated it make it easy to see patterns and make better assumptions. It's that reason that I never believed President Obama would lose his position. Literally a year earlier I remember reading some Farkers who had laid out the entire situation and the facts and the numbers just weren't there for Romney.

What's truly funny is that so many over there swore they weren't Republicans, but rather "Independents."  Now they are declaring their tenure as GOP shills as they jump ship....

That's what is so hilarious about the GOP citing the fact that Romney won with independents as some kind of indicator that unbiased people preferred the Republican platform. The actual fact was that huge numbers of their own members refused to self-identify as such. "Independent" became code for "can't bear to say I'm with the GOP anymore". But Fox still tries to hold up "independent" support for GOP positions as meaningful.

Okay, I'll bite. How is a little intra-party shenanigans relevant to the man's position? How is this a high crime or misdemeanor? What law was broken?

Go ahead make your case.

PS: I don't think any court would admit the cellphone vid of the purported teleprompter into evidence without just a wee bit of validation that it is what it is claimed to be and a solid chain of custody is established for it.

PPS: I think what was done was sleazy as all get out, but I'm not disputing that. I'm asking you to make your case that it's an impeachable offense.

You didn't read the followups like I asked, did you? Your questions were already answered in that long-closed thread.

(Me): Read this post and its followups for something very serious that Bœhner did (on video!) not long ago that IMHO renders him not only unsuited to be Speaker of the House, but for which he should be impeached.
Only members of the Executive and Judiciary can be impeached. Members of the Legislative branch are expelled, by a two-thirds vote of whichever House they are a member of.

Carry on....

Not to mention, you know, his actual job. John Boehner can single-handedly bring a bill to the floor or not- the only way of getting around the leadership is a discharge petition, which is a massively difficult thing to get done. Not to mention the behind the scenes wrangling, setting out what bills get floor time, which don't, which get cursory votes where members of the party might choose to split, which are the focus of a full court press where arms get broken behind the scenes to make sure wavering votes stay right where they are.

Boehner has been a very weak speaker in many ways, partially due to his style and where his strengths lie, but also due to the nutjobs in his caucus that he has to deal with.

It's an incredibly powerful job, and hardly just ceremonial.

ilambiquated: Gonz: Look, I realize this is Fark, but the man's name is pronounced "Bay-nher".

Actually "Böhner" but that's pretty close. His family probably came from Nuremberg, and fled to America after the failed revolution of 1848. The name means they lived on a hill.

Hills are just places where the Earth has pitched a tent.

wjmorris3: Kittypie070: I wonder if Mr W J Morris 3 of Toadfart, Alaska, comprehends that there are Reds living in blue states.

Have you considered how much of a leech New Jersey is on the United States of America? They get a ridiculous amount back of their tax dollars, why give them any more?

As a fellow resident of New Jersey, I assume you're aware that our taxes provide more federal aid than any other state in the union?

Shaggy_C: Senate Minority leader, now there's the real power in the US Federal government.

The Senate Minority Leader does indeed wield tremendous power, but less than the center-most member of the minority party. (Outgoing incumbent Olympia Snowe handed off the reins of power to her fellow Mainer Susan Collins in a touching, bland ceremony yesterday.)

She, in turn, can pretty much suck Anthony Kennedy's dick along with all the rest of us. 'Cause that's the farker in charge.

COMALite J: You didn't read the followups like I asked, did you? Your questions were already answered in that long-closed thread.

Yes, I did, and no, they weren't.

That why I asked.

You've made no case, whatsoever.

Last bullet point in this post in that thread:
• And that leads us to the really big difference in seriousness between the two: You just watched the Speaker of the United States Congress House of Representatives, arguably the most powerful directly elected person in the nation, completely ignore the very basis of democracy in a key vote for his own Party, involving his own delegates! This brings up a vital question: has he done this before, in Congress!? Has he sent bills on to the Senate or even the President that did not actually pass a majority vote of the House? Has he declared bills as not passing that did pass? We just watched him demonstrate how willing he is, without a hint of shame, to flagrantly perjure the results of a floor vote! This, mind you, for his own Party! These happen in the House as well!
Have I made an actual case? Not yet. But I think that Ben Swann's video and my analysis thereof have established sufficient probable cause to warrant further investigation.

If he corrupted even one House floor vote as we saw and heard him do without a hint of shame nor twinge of conscience for the RNC rules change vote, that would at the very least justify removing him as Speaker, if not from the House entirely, and criminal charges of malfeasance in office may well be in order.

And what reason do you have to suppose such a thing occurred? Rank speculation.

COMALite J: that would at the very least justify removing him as Speaker,

I wonder what you think the job of "Whip" entails. Votes get leveraged every day.

COMALite J: criminal charges of malfeasance in office may well be in order.

I trust you can cite a relevant statute?

Look, I'm not saying it wasn't sleazy, it was. And that's discounting the teleprompter vid (unsubstantiated) or the bus-jacking (mere allegation, driver could have been circling looking for a legal place to allow passengers to disembark safely, we don't know).

But if the guy can't get sanctioned for passing out lobbyist checks on the floor of the House , this ain't a hill of beans.

You're pissing up a rope, dude.

And you still haven't made a case. You've expressed your outrage, but that's not "a case".

Oh, one more thing:

You're discounting one very important phrase, which is a "get out of jail free" card:

"IN THE OPINION OF THE CHAIR"

I'm trying to find an example of the thing your claim to seek: Back in the Air America days, Al Franken and Randy Rhodes both repeatedly played a clip of a GOP Member of Congress presiding over a voice vote, which was blatantly called wrong, not even close. Nothing happened to him. If I find it, I'll post it.

You can tilt at windmills as long as you like, but nothing's going to come of this.

Nor should it.

Speculation? Yes, which is why I specified "If" above and "IMHO" in the original post.
(Me): that would at the very least justify removing him as Speaker,

Does it involve chairing the entire House and presiding over and tabulating the results of floor voice votes on bills? I thought that only the Speaker did that, but am open to correction. I'm not talking about leveraging. I'm talking about willfully misrepresenting the results of voice votes on bills intended to become the law of the land.
(Me): criminal charges of malfeasance in office may well be in order.

No, which is why I said those underlined words.

Look, I'm not saying it wasn't sleazy, it was. And that's discounting the teleprompter vid (unsubstantiated)...

You think that someone faked that teleprompter video that convincingly and that quickly (complete with visible background of the known portion of the venue where the teleprompter monitor was), and nobody spoke out about that when the teleprompter monitor was apparently within clear view of a section of delegates?

or the bus-jacking (mere allegation, driver could have been circling looking for a legal place to allow passengers to disembark safely, we don't know).

That might explain circling around the venue (but I doubt it for reasons I'll mention in a bit). It would not explain circling it, then driving somewhere else entirely a substantial distance away, then driving back and letting them off practically at the door right after the vote was done.

It was a shuttle bus, not a car. It didn't have to find a parking place. Shuttles had a designated loading / unloading spot, and that spot was only to be used by shuttles (and maybe taxis).

But if the guy can't get sanctioned for passing out lobbyist checks on the floor of the House , this ain't a hill of beans.

You're pissing up a rope, dude.

That's pretty bad alright, and I didn't know about it before. Thanks. I still, however, disagree on which "ain't a hill of beans." Willfully misrepresenting the results of floor voice votes on bills intended to become law would be far and away more serious, again IMHO. It'd undermine the whole point of even having a House of Representatives in the first place.

And you still haven't made a case. You've expressed your outrage, but that's not "a case".

I never said I had a case, not in the sense of a prosecutor or D.A.

Deucednuisance: Oh, one more thing:

Thus the "U.S.A.!! U.S.A.!!" shouts which, according to testimony from people who were there, were pre-arranged and timed to drown out the shouts of "Objection!" and "Point of Order!" (which he would've been obligated to address had he heard them) to give him the plausible deniability that constitutes your GOoJF card.

I'm trying to find an example of the thing your claim to seek: Back in the Air America days, Al Franken and Randy Rhodes both repeatedly played a clip of a GOP Member of Congress presiding over a voice vote, which was blatantly called wrong, not even close. Please do. Please do so if you can find an example of a Democrat doing this, too. Evil is evil, no matter who does it.

You can tilt at windmills as long as you like, but nothing's going to come of this.

I don't expect it to. I just won't sit back and acquiesce in silence as our representative republic is undermined. I may not be able to do anything, but at least I can make it more well known.

Nor should it.

WAT!? Why not? Why on Earth, if my speculations turn out to be true, should nothing come of this? I really wanna hear this!

Precisely because it's based on nothing more than "speculation".

Period.

You really need to start reading all the words in my posts. Speculations that turn out to be true are no longer mere speculations, practically by definition.

I think Tip O'Neill did a stunt somewhat like that once, back in the day; called for a voice vote, and declared that the Ayes had it -- when the actual balance was anything but clear. I think it was this incident that I'm thinking of, but I'm not sure.

Was sketchy back then, too.
