(Yahoo)   Don Cherry congratulates the US on their win over Canada in the WJC and wishes them luck against the Swedes. Just...ah, screw it...do I even have to do the "just kidding" follow-up? It's Don Cherry for God's sake. What do you think happened?   (ca.sports.yahoo.com) divider line 65

Who in the what?

2013-01-03 02:11:00 PM
The World Junior Championship.  The best Junior (U20)-aged amateur hockey players in the world, and one of the most exciting tournaments in the sport.  Most players in this tournament have been drafted by one NHL team or another, and some are actual NHLers that are age eligible and playing this year because no hockey.

Canada was undefeated in the round robin, including beating the US handily.  They met in the semifinals early this morning, and the US won convincingly.  Losing this tournament at all makes Canadians grumpy.  Losing to a team we beat already makes us extra grumpy.  Losing to the US?  Go ahead and turn the schadenfreude meter to 11.

The upside is that no other country on the planet takes this tournament as seriously as we do, so we know you won't lord it over us.

2013-01-03 02:11:53 PM
I am surprised he didn't go off on the Canadian team for being soft and playing like a bunch a pansy Europeans.

unyon: Canada was undefeated in the round robin, including beating the US handily.

Yeah, I don't think a 2-1 win that ended with Canada on the PK and came within inches of going to overtime counts as "beating handily".

Yeah Don's past his best before date. Please ignore him from a fellow Canadian.

Hockey Night in Canada is so awesome it needs someone like Don Cherry to hold its awesomeness in check.

/I'm not talking about his suits
//I'm talking about his jingoist attitude and often barely veiled racism, I like the suits

Oh yeah? Well the best Canadian juniors are playing in the NHL.

Oh, right...I guess that excuse won't work this year.

(Still, I fully admit I would've rather seen Canada vs. Russia in the final, just because they hate each other so much.)

As a Canadian i find Cherry to be quite embarrassing. His racism is becoming less and less thinly veiled by the years. His vision for good hockey is woefully out of date and his stance on the concussion issue is also retrograde.

I hope the CBC ditches him soon.

I may actually get up to watch the gold medal game seeing as two players from my local OHL team (Plymouth) are playing against each other. Having only had exposure to NCAA hockey (Let's Go Tech!) before moving to MI, I've become a big fan of the CHL and the quality of talent that they put on the ice.

If anything, it's more of an honestly confused "wait, we beat you by that much?" than anything.

I saw the score earlier and was convinced it was a typo.

Movin to MI to marry my fiancee who is from there. It has more to do with the US development team program than the CHL, sorry Grapes. Those 17-18 year old kids consistently play junior teams and university teams, and get actual playing time, and learn the game. Winning isn't expected, but playing and improving is, and it's really helped turn US hockey into an actual force in international hockey.

This is the first time in 20 years I didn't watch a second of the tournament, and i honestly don't really feel i missed out on much.

As for places like Boston watching this tournament, no they don't. When it was held in Boston, it was a huge flop attendance wise, just like any other time it was not held in Canada. The exception being North Dakota, which was flooded with Canadians. It's too bad no else appreciates this tournament, it's great hockey.

I just can't be bothered to get up at 2 to watch it

I just went to the Great Lakes Invitational, but I'd rather be watching WJC. Even if hockey comes back, I doubt I'll give them any of my money this year. I love the Wings, but at this point, I'd rather go see the Whalers, Spitfires or UofM right now.

Or even the first rebroadcast, to be honest.  The most I've seen is in the evening rebroadcast when I'm having a cold one in the pub.

Last year it was here in Calgary.  I was drunk at 12 games of the tournament, so I think I've done my World Junior duty.

I watched the GLI on TV, glad Tech won...nice story. We're going to the NCAA regionals in Grand Rapids. Michiganders are lucky to have many non-NHL options. I need to get my kids passports so we can see the Spitfires.

Thats one of the beautiful things about being a night owl. Watched the game this morning at 4am (EST). Had I not watched it live, I wouldn't watch the rebroadcast because there is no way I wouldn't already know the score within 5 minutes of waking up.

I think if Canada were to lose to any team, Don would prefer it be team USA. He is fond of most North American born players, from either side of the border. He just doesn't like those Europeans.

Juan Sanchez, Walter Hermann, Fabricio Oberto, Luis Scola, Andres Nocioni, Carlos Delfino, and Rubén Wolkowyski all were on the 2004 team and have some NBA experience. Some of them only played a little bit, but some, like Oberto, Scola, Nocioni, and Delfino, are/were legitimate pieces of an NBA rotation, not benchwarmers.

One of the perks to no one following it, though, was that I didn't have to get up at 2 am to watch the games.  No one cared, so I still wouldn't know the outcome when I watched it in the evening.  This morning, though, one of my friends apparently stayed up and had posted the results to facebook; an annoying friend who doesn't need sleep, apparently.

I should have just stayed up, but I wouldn't have slept til like 10 am and I had lunch plans.
