I Love My Ducks (Return of the Quack)

I know it's old, but who doesn't like looking at cheerleaders?

I don't see Chip Kelly's style of play working nearly as well in the NFL as it does at Oregon. The only benefit he gets from moving to the NFL is the allowance to lose a game or two and still make it into championship contention. And it seems like Oregon always manages to not click for at least one of their games every season.

2013-01-03 04:45:20 PM
Lanche Seastruck, the Baylor running back that ruined Kansas State's perfect season, couldn't was only a bench-warmer at Oregon so look for the Ducks to run all over K-State.

Ducks got this

Another story line: will this bowl game be at full capacity and not have glaring empty sections?

I tend to agree, but then again I never thought the Redskins high school offense would lead to RG3/Morris running wild and ridiculously wide open wide receivers on every play action.

I contend that Oregon has the hottest cheerleaders of any school. Or at least they did a couple of years ago.

I'm hoping this game is as entertaining as the Baylor/K-State game was earlier this season.

Oregon seems to "not click" when either Coach Kelly is distracted by something or they face a team with a very punishing defense with a pro-style offense. Translation: that is not a good fit for the NFL.

Going further, Kelly is able to succeed because he can create an offense that almost always has matchup problems against college defenses. Most defenses are not deep enough or conditioned well enough to deal with Oregon's offensive pressure for an entire game; on top of that, most teams don't have the time to open their defense up with speed so as to match up against the Ducks. To this point, he can recruit players that fit his system, and though he may have an undersized o-line he is able to make it work because college football has many more lanes and holes, and players who are less capable to react to the spread option, screens, or plays with a lot of downfield blocking. The NFL is a different animal altogether... he won't have the matchups each and every time because the NFL is entirely made up of speed, he won't be able to "recruit" guys that fit his system with the ease at which he can in college, and NFL defensive backs will have no problem finding ways to ensure his receivers think twice about blocking (sometimes holding) all the way down the field.

If I were looking to hire a coach, today, I'd be calling Louisville's coach for the amazing performance he put on last night, particularly on offense. You heard it time and time again from the QB in postgame interviews: "Coach told us to take what the defense gave us." His team played with class, too, unlike Florida.

2013-01-03 05:33:14 PM
It's kind of funny to me how ESPN is completely burying the fact that Floria got torched last night.

Instead they're talking up the NFL.

He's going to pull a Pete Carroll and get out of town before The Ducks ends up on NCAA probation. He'll get a fat paycheck and Oregon will be punished

All you Oregon haters can suck it. GO DUCKS!!! :)

Ok, I sure hope all this CHIP TO NFL?!?!?! business won't distract the team and lead to another bowl game letdown. They pulled it off last year so I have hope. As for the NCAA, I guess we'll find that out one way or the other.

KState, no hard feelings but YOU'RE GOING DOWN!! :D

Awww, bulldg you're not a Beev fan are you?? (kidding...sorta)

As a Duck though I hope it isn't too severe, but let's face it - you have to follow the rules. My only gripe is it seems like the SEC teams can get away with this crap but any other conference, they get shut down for anything. Still, if you screwed up, you gotta pay up. I guess we'll know the truth of what really went down when the NCAA finally gets off its behind and goes to work.

All the pundits seem to think this is in the bag for Oregon, so as a supporter of the Wildcats, I'll just enjoy it.

IMO, If K-State wins, Ty Zimmerman (free safety) will be the player you hear about in the post game.

Go Cats.

Why do FAIL NFL teams never stop their FAIL ways?

Jags getting Tebow.

Browns getting Kelly.

Both moves relegate them to mediocrity for years to come.

They talked about it all day, the Florida fans in the office were biatching at me to change the channel, I refused just to torture them and then every once in a while I would ask "How'd Florida do last night!?" Most of them had headphones in by lunchtime.

2013-01-03 08:21:56 PM
My (all over the place) thoughts:

1. I don't like the "nothing to play for" arguments. In my eyes, they're pre-emptive excuses. Motivation is a huge part of coaching. If you can't motivate, then that takes you down a peg as a leader and a coach.

2. A Chip Kelly offense in the NFL is liable to get someone killed, as in cause them to literally lose their life on the field. Of course, I think he'll be smart enough to modify it and may surprise some people. I have my own doubts simply because he has only ever known college coaching. Very intelligent guy, no NFL experience whatsoever.

3. Lou Holtz seems like a nice man but he is unintelligible and it is getting worse.

4. I think Oregon should win easily, but my sentimental favorite is Kansas State. He worked closely with Hayden Fry and I'm just gonna have a soft spot for almost anybody who worked with Hayden.

Memo to singers: stop farking with the anthem and sing it right. (unless you're Marvin Gaye)

That was one of the worst anthems I've heard before a sporting event.

NEW RULE: When you have a college bowl game, you will not be allowed to use a singer for the national anthem. You will have to find some sort of musical group on hand that can play The Star-Spangled Banner, in 3/4 time like it's supposed to be.

One of the best anthem renditions in history, which is why everyone tries to copy it.

I remember some people getting upset when at an NHL playoff game, a Canadian sang the American anthem properly (didn't linger or add any additional notes) as they thought he was being rude for "rushing through it".

steamingpile: jayhawk88: steamingpile: Wait, since when was KSU a power run team?

Well my point was if your leading rusher is your QB then you aren't a power rushing team, that's like saying VT was a power rushing team when Vick was there, the offense is basically try to pass. Not there? F*ck it, runnnnn!!!!!

Yeah but most of their runs are still designed to get the ball carrier to a hole between the tackles; even though it's the QB it doesn't get much more power than that.

Yeah, if Oregon weren't fellated by the NCAA that was 15 yards and a first down...

The only problem with the whole doctor supervised HGH treatments is that if you travel internationally a lot, some countries will consider your medication regimen illegal as they don't accept anti-aging as a legal use for HGH and steroids.

Why would you kick the XP?

If you go for 2, you can
a) if you make it, you got the two-point conversion you'd need later to tie the game. You can kick XPs. It has the advantage of being slightly less expected, which typically results in a better conversion rate, too.
b) if you miss it, it's still a two-possession game. If you keep kicking XPs, then you miss the 2-pt conversion, you get to the point where now you have to score an extra time.
c) I suppose this is semi-moot if they go for two on the next try (if they don't give up a score on defense)

Check the record of 'new' NFL coaches like:
Dave Shula
Marty Mornenwhig (sp?...nvm don't care)
Bruce Coslet
Eric Mangini (Jets version...okay he sucked with the Browns too)
Mike Singletary
Ron Rivera (1 more year)

A new organization plus a tried & true coach is generally better than gambling on a college guy or some assistant without the nod of an existing HC.

It's more psychological. I'd bet most of the players aren't doing math in the huddle, but they understand momentum. You fail on a 2 pt conversion, you're going to feel a let down, despite just scoring.

Actually, it is more of a "repetitions mean better execution" thing. The Ducks go for 2 points because they are high-scoring enough that it rarely matters if they don't get it. But they are the team most likely to get it when they do need it because they routinely do 2-point conversions, as opposed to teams that only pull the play out when their asses are on the line. Same thing with 4th-and-are-you-insane: Oregon sees 4th down conversions as something relatively normal, so when it is truly needed they have the confidence that this is a normal play. My risk-adverse, play-the-safe-odds, NFL-watching friend literally growls at Chip for doing this stuff; he totally agrees that it is good practice, but he cannot accept you would call these plays on purpose and with malice of forethought. That the Ducks pull the plays off routinely hurts his head.

Sportscenter had Thomas going 26 mph over the goal line on the opening kickoff. He's also on Oregon's track team.

Of course, on the track team, you're not in pads.

emtbiz: #47 should be ejected for that forearm shiver

Linebacker Kiko Alonso wasn't called because he was trying to pop the ball loose. Blame Klein for trying to eke out an extra yard and letting himself get stood up.

Alonso is no punk. He's been popping balls loose all year. I get why the casual viewer who doesn't watch the Ducks doesn't know that but it was ridiculous that the ESPN sportscasters had no idea about Alonso and his numerous caused fumbles but instead biatched that he was trying to shiv Klein.

Alonso is a class act.
