Boner states that he is confident he'll keep his jerb, thus setting the stage for him to be shocked and disappointed when his colleagues throw him under the bus.

2013-01-03 01:02:48 PM
No one is currently opposing him, but he could still fall short on votes.

I thought they were putting Sarah Palin in?

2013-01-03 01:05:18 PM
Apparently 10 GOPers have already not voted for Boehner - either abstaining or voting for random dudes. We need 7 more to force a second ballot.

James!: No one is currently opposing him, but he could still fall short on votes.

When you've got teabaggers throwing in names like Colin Powell and Allen West, anything can happen.

It was actually a Democrat who voted for Powell.

Why would the greenlight of this be delayed until 5 PM when its happening right now?

WISconsin, dammit.

AHAH!!  See, even the Do-Nothing Congress has gotten to the Modmins!

I've been swamped and haven't looked at any analysis on the incoming members. Any good articles worth reading?

Just waiting for the gin-soaked teary remarks that are sure to come. Unless Pelosi actually wins. Then I'll be laughing hysterically at the exploding heads.

Allen West?  Wow, they are bitter.

dunno, but thanks Modmins for greening this. I wasn't expecting you'd do it or have it go on when it was actually going on.

/Is it bad I'm turning the politics tab into a sports tab with these types of threads?

Will they manage to do even less then the 112th Congress?  Place your bets now!

2013-01-03 01:21:52 PM
Can someone slap together one of those Obama 08 'Hope' campaign posters only with Boehner and the word 'Scotch'?

Lets see what the Real Americans are thinking. The smarter older brother of Fark Cons.

"Clint Eastwood for speaker."

"Or G. Gordon Liddy (as long as we're dreaming)."

"I would pay good money to see someone in the House tomorrow nominate Herman Cain for speaker. "

"Alan West: The Speaker of the House does not have to be a current member of the House of Representatives."

"Speaker Ted Nugent - works for me."

All I know--and I know this as a fact--is tears will be shed, "fark yourselves" will be uttered, and minorities will be derided.

There wouldn't be a Republican caucus present, if these things didn't happen

Yeah, but some of those who abstained are coming in the second call.

Looks like Boehner is getting it.

2013-01-03 01:23:32 PM
Boehner gets exactly 218 votes to be re-elected Speaker, with Michele Bachmann casting the deciding vote.

It's what you could always name your lap band :P

I doubt Boehner loses his Speakership. Cantor has already said he supports him for the position, and is confident he will receive it. At most, it will go to a second ballot as a "shot across the bow" to warn Boehner.

At least Reid is extending the "legislative day" long enough to supposedly try to reform the fillibuster process. We'll see if he carries through with his threat, or he pussies out and keeps business as usual.

Pretty much. Boehner is quickly becoming the poster child for dysfunction; mandatory Cialis.

Limbaugh is pretty bitter today.  he's ranting about how voters are lazy, greedy and should be ashamed of themselves for voting Obama back into office.  Because CEO greed is apparently better than greedy poor people or something.  At any rate, he's ranting that the GOP needs to dig in their heels and not give an inch on any issue no matter how big or small.  in his own words 'why should we [conservatives] make deals with the democrats? we have nothing in common with those people, there is no common ground'.

I came into the show late so I didn't catch the first hour (hey, I was sending out resumes and trying to get a job) so I don't know what he was saying at show start. But Limbaugh is spending THIS hour complaining that american voters are fat, lazy and greedy.  so there's that.  which is nice.

If you want to call it leadership, sure.

I predict that the 113th Congress will be the ruination of the nation and the damnation of the souls of all concerned. Just like the previous 112 Congresses were.

In honour of this auspicious occasion, here is one of my favourite quotations from Humbugs of the World, by P.T. Barnum, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1867 and then went back to defrauding people of their money by giving them a good show of sometimes dubious authenticity without benefit of public office:

But need I explain to my own beloved countrymen that there is humbug in politics? Does anybody go
into a political campaign without it? are no exaggerations of
our candidate's merits to be allowed? no depreciations of the other  candidate? Shall we no longer prove that the success of the party
opposed to us will overwhelm the land in ruin? Let me see. Leaving out the two elections of General Washington, eighteen times that very fact has been proved by the party that was beaten, and immediately we have
not been ruined, notwithstanding that the dreadful fatal fellows on the other side got their hands on the offices and their fingers into the treasury.

Congratulations America, on escaping by the skin of your teeth from the demonic forces of evil 112 times. Good luck to the Irksome Empire on Operation Impending Doom 113. As you know, the doom-sayers are bound to be right eventually.

I would't be completely suprised if we ended up with Cantor as Speaker. Boehner violated the Hastert rule, even if it was for the good of the country. If the Hastert rule has no consiquences then there is a posibility that the 113th gets something done. But even if that wewre the case, i don't know how things would be negotiated, becasue Boehne won't sit down with Obama anymore.

Remarks coming up. I predict one "how tough I had it as a kid" story, three "Dems are meanies" references, and at least two tearful breakdowns. One with snot.

I do have you down as "he who I donated to Obama" so I may just do that. I have probably been meaning to, just not gotten around to it yet

Boehner will get the job.

The GOP has grown comfortable to the idea of being ruled by the love for a warm wet greasy smokin' yellow Boehner.
