The newspaper appears to be dated today, which I guess means this isn't a repeat, but didn't this already happen once? I could have sworn I heard about this happening before.

OMG yes they are.  Walk into any gun store and you will find that almost everything is at least 20% more expensive.  Good luck finding reasonably priced ammo too

Gun store owners aren't dummies. They know many of their clientele are paranoiacs who start hoarding every time something like this happens. What better time to gouge them?

Well, cost from the distributor and the manufacturer is going up too, so you have to take that into account.  I'll tell you what though, here in VA, private sale prices have spiked quite a bit.

Fixed.  The only way I got a few hundred .22 rounds was buying them online.  Every Wal-Mart in Orlando seems to be out of 'em. Dicks is out (heh).  Bass Pro is out.   And god forbid you need .223 ammo.  There's a gun show this weekend, and I usually go just to see what's going on in the insane gun worship world, but I think this one's going to be more lunatic than usual.  If I had had the money to invest in five or six Bushmasters, I could probably make about a thousand bucks profit on each of them.  It's ridiculous.  There's no doubt that Obama has been the best spokesperson the gun industry has ever had.  He didn't even have to threaten to ban guns and profits are off the charts.

If you can find anything. I walked into a LGS yesterday -- a regular gun store, not a pawn store -- and they had MAYBE ten handguns remaining, a couple pump-action long guns and one or two .22 rifles. That's it. They were completely cleaned out of ammo, too.

I was looking to get a Derringer for my wife to keep in her purse (she leaves work at 8pm and the parking lot is not the best lit)...the cost on them has risen about 40% according to my local gun dealer.  He said that I should just wait a few more months when the over production of guns floods the market and prices fall dramatically.

Our newspapers should not be running gun ads - including ads for antique and collectible gun shows - next to stories about Sandy Hook. It's insensitive, and it shouldn't have happened. It was an oversight, and we apologize for it. We have taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Don't get a derringer, get a dedicated carry pistol with some safety features like an lcp 380. Slightly larger, much safer IMO.

An estimated 32,788 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2010...

...31,224 firearm-related deaths in 2007...

I think the numbers have actually flip-flopped and automobiles now hold a slight lead over guns, but the facts I dug up with all of 45 seconds of Googling start to suggest your statement may best be cited as "where the sun don't shine".

You quoted "deaths". He quoted "kid deaths".

Since gun accidents disproportionately involve children and car accidents disproportionately involve adults, there's a chance you're both right.

Kind of hard to call them paranoid when the person leading the new round of reactionary gun control legislation said this on 60 mins:

"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States, for an outright ban, picking up [every gun]... ... Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in. I would have done that. I could not do that, the votes weren't here."

I love the gun debate but no one ever addresses the true problem: Death. More people die from death than any disease, accident or weather event combined. We should ban death. How about violence free zones instead of gun free zones since evidently criminals aren't heeding the current laws. Shouldn't gun control be considered too focused? There are plenty of other ways bad guys are committing heinous crimes. Just sayin yo!

That number isn't included in the 32,788 number. That's just the number of people killed in traffic accidents. A suicide involving a motor vehicle would be a traffic on purpose. I don't have figures for how many die in traffic on purposes every year.

johnsoninca: Well, aren't more people buying guns in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre?

Everyone who was thinking about buying an AR-15 is going out and buying one now before the become illegal because if you already own one, it's grandfathered in and you don't have to give it up.

The publicity surrounding shootings and gun bans are fantastic for gun and ammo makers, as well as criminals, as rafts of people who aren't ready to own a gun rush to get one before they cant.

This in turn assures more shootings, which gets ratings for news networks.

All of this nonsense allows politicians to be blowhards and "score points" by crowing about being pro/anti gun, while they sell your constitutional rights to the highest bidder while you're blinded by outrage.

/so nothing will ever change because nobody but people who don't matter want change.

saturn badger: Endive Wombat: Yeah...no my wife is pretty OCD when it comes to the organization of her purse

How can you be OCD in that way? It's a bag that holds stuff. It requires digging. Even my pockets require that. Unless it is a bag that has multiple fold out pockets for this and that and even then you have remember where you buried it.

Face it, dude No chicks purse is so organized that she can find a derringer, let alone a .45, in the time it takes for a bad guy to tap her on the skull in a parking lot.

Then there is the whole carrying concealed weapons and is she trained and... the list goes on.

Maybe you should rethink your plans.

Spray?

That would work but any defensive device would pretty much have to be carried in hand. None of this digging in bags and crap.

At least she wouldn't have to worry about brandishing.

duffblue: It's a good thing I bought all those AR receivers a few years ago, paid for two semesters of college with a few of them. My next sale will be the down payment on my first piece of property.

I'm pretty sure it's difficult to just buy an AR receiver. You've got to buy the entire lower.

(clips vs. magazines, etc...)

Look, it was tasteless and inappropriate ad placement.

Is there ANY reason why we have to argue about the relative merit of AR-15's and gun vs. automotive suicides?

johnsoninca: Endive Wombat: johnsoninca: Well, aren't more people buying guns in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre?
OMG yes they are.  Walk into any gun store and you will find that almost everything is at least 20% more expensive.  Good luck finding reasonably priced ammo too
Then I'm sure they're reaching their target audience.

i went by my local gun store the last weekend and it was packed. Usually there's three or four vehicles there. I was trying to figure out if some hunting season had opened, or what, but I think it was just people going to buy more guns.

I had a wild idea to go in there and pretend like I was writing a magazine article, and interview everyone. Unfortunately, I am not so good at conning people, even for the LULz.

Same here. Every range, gun store, even walmart's ammo section, is totally packed, and inventory is dwindling. People are buying guns like they're going to be banned soon.

The obvious solution is to stop running stories about Sandy Hook.....

StoPPeRmobile: Do you know the way to Mordor: The newspaper CONNECTED the two items inappropriately, but readers can get a pair of scissors and CUT it!

They could send out stickers if the reader requests it.

Ahem- that was an attempted pun on the state Connecticut

Uranus Is Huge! [TotalFark]

Is there a way we can all point and laugh at the silly troll, that is practically doing backflips for attention, without giving him any bites?

Yes, these is, but you failed to do so.
