George W. Bush unironically wears a cowboy hat. Obama could show up in nothing but a banana hammock and be more dignified.

I live in the south and see those damn hats everywhere, usually on people who have never met a cow that wasn't medium rare. You just know that when people from other countries think "dumb American", they imagine us all wearing cowboy hats, like we're nine years old and riding on wooden horsies. That's like meeting an Irish person and fighting the urge to glance down and see if they have buckles on their shoes.

There's plenty of other things about him I'm fairly sure would have a far greater influence on his "presidential-ness".

Also docking several points for using the word "think" incorrectly.

When you say "his souvenir shop" do you mean it's filled with items that Obama personally created or chose? Because according to the article, the shop will be selling inauguration items that tourists love to buy. I'm sure there were plenty of trashy Bush souvenirs that were sold to the mouthbreathing republitards a few years ago.

Nah, they're just not conservative. They are, however, relatively certain that if they continue to kiss the asses of filthy rich, old white men, that it will 1953, again in no time or, at the very least, they'll get a seat in the getaway car after the economy resembles post war Dresden. So far, the "nudge, wink, smirk" platform is sucking canal water, Johnny can't read and talented people are pushing brooms if they can find work at all. This is not, however, the fault of any president or cabinet, as a root cause. It's the fault of a nation who were trained to drop their knees and service any swinging dick with an 8 figure bank account. So far, the costume party hasn't done much for anybody who isn't already rich, but we just keep waving that tattered pom pom. *sigh*

All politics aside, turning yourself INTO a brand where you can get people to pay to advertise for you is brilliant if you can pull it off. It makes supports feel like they've literally bought in to the campaign and makes them more emotionally invested than getting a free sticker in the mail. Now, it's counter to how I think politics should be, but damn if it wasn't a master stroke.

Wise_Guy: Damn. You can even make fun of a bunch of tacky crap without democrats getting all bent out of shape because they perceive it as a slight against their guy. "B-b-but Bush!" Jesus. Bush was an idiot and a crappy president--what does that have to do with this garbage that makes the Franklin Mint looks respectable? Grow up. Some of you guys make the idiots in congress look mature.

Making fun of the tacky crap is one thing. Suggesting that the tacky crap makes the man 'less presidential'... you know, the exactly farking thing the headline says... is quite another.

Remember that time Obama kicked off a war on a lie, and then a few months into it, pranced around on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier wearing his superhero flight pajamas?

Rightwing butthurt rolls on unchecked.

Think the smoking, beer guzzling, and shirtless beach pics already made Obama look like the least presidential president ever?

I mean, why would anyone think that's a slight against Obama? Some people, I'm tellin' ya.

What? Every president since the invention of photography more convenient than painting a portrait has had those kinds of pictures. Hell, even before then, probably, some of the founding fathers were absurdly proud of their brewing skills and some of their first meetings were in pubs.

Wow, is this true? I don't watch The View, so I don't know. Do they have other guests, or is it just him every episode now? Did they have to expand the schedule of the show to a longer format to make this possible? I mean, I knew he was on The View once or twice, I guess, but what you're saying is true and Obama spends more time on The View than he does doing his job, they must have had to expand their time slot. What do they even talk about anymore?

I'm calling racist.

When people complain that Michelle Obama doesn't look like a first lady you can tell they have a very difficult time with a black woman in the white house who is wearing something besides a maid's outfit.

Just what we need. More suckering in of the masses to buy overpriced shiat that's most likely made in China to pay for a bunch of unnecessary shiat.

Here's a thought, Mr. President. If you want parades, balls, celebrations and all of the other bells and whistles to honor yourself while many of your citizens are barely getting by, pony up & pay or it yourself. I'm pretty sure you can afford it.

Wade_Wilson: George W.

Damn near every other male Mexican I see in downtown Santa Ana is wearing either a cowboy hat or a gang bandana. Except for the roving Bands that play at the clubs and on street corners on Friday and Saturday nights. They generally wear those huge sombreros with 2 to 4 foot radius brims.

The rules.™

People in uniforms and suits are benevolent and run things and you should do whatever they say.

Anybody who presents a posture of authority should be obeyed because that's respectful.

Politicians and people connected to government are better than us and shouldn't have to be concerned with stuff like making money or paying for things because that's not a good image to project.

Anybody connected with churches are only interested in your spiritual well being and you should listen to whatever they say and be respectful

Soldiers and firefighter are all brave, brave heroes as soon as they put on the uniform, unless it turnes out they don't love America, then they are a disgrace.

Rich people go that way because they are smarter than you and if you work very hard for them, they might give you enough of their hard earned money to live on.

Are we all done with this fairy story?

Are we?

Can we just pour gas on that insultingly ridiculous, works-on-most-small-children, fantasy world social construct and fire that trash up, piss out the ashes and laugh and dance, and dance, and dance?

Cause the emperor's ass is not only hanging out, he's taking a crap on the coffee table.

Things cost money. Ask any corporate whore. Making things that people might want as a memento - this having never occurred in history of politics - might involve at least breaking even on them once the products are made. See how that works? *snort*

The 40 years in ashes America that the GOP is most certain is alive and well is wearing a toe tag and some corporate monkeys are bidding on the forthcoming ashes to sell in small egg timers for souvenirs. When THAT is a bigger problem than some dime store inaugural boutique selling knick knacks, call me.

Like if they got rid of Joy Behar and instead it was President Obama asking Jim Carrey about how fun it was to guest star on 30 Rock or whatever. But they kind of have that all-woman thing going on, and Obama is male, so I'd be surprised if that's what happened. Either way, I have to look into this. Good argumentative technique. Put words ("travesty") in my mouth and call me out on a point that I've already conceded. While I reject the premise of your question, I will answer it. The $3 bumper sticker, the historic opting-out of federal funding in '08, and the sale of inaugural swag (however common the practice) are indicative of the commercialization of our political system. Doesn't matter. The GOP are nothing but fault finders. They're like Captain Sobel from Band Of Brothers. Their goal is not go develop someone to be super-qualified for that or any other office. Their goal is just to feel superior by making denigrating remarks.

They probably had teachers like that in school (no doubt, if they went to a private school and had ancient teachers as characterized in Dead Poets Society) and emulated those bombastic Herr Professor teachers for their ability to talk down a wise-acre. You know, poor Georgie couldn't muster enough spine to yell at class clown, John, so Georgie lives his alternate life vicariously through that pompous Latin teacher who puts down John with a few turns of a latin phrase. Thunderpipes: ChadM89: I love how the conservatives complain about Obama not being presidential enough in their view, while at the same time they're always bloviating about elitism, and how they want their leaders to be "regular folk" like their neighbors, and making guys like Joe The Plumber the public face of their party. Sarah Palin can "you betcha! [wink!]" at the camera in a farking vice-presidential debate and that's fine because she's so real and folksy and down-to-earth and god love her for it, but Obama takes his shirt off at the farking beach and all of a sudden he doesn't have the gravitas that the office requires.

Goddamn you people are stupid.

When he spends more time on "The View" than he does communicating to Congress or press conferences, yes, he has lost all credibility. He is a power hungry douche who attracts like minded people.

He's the sort of guy who would run for president? Old news.

bunner: natas6.0: conservatives are racists who want to cement your vaginas!

*sigh*

It's actually a fairly inevitable transition that all societies make, once they make that fateful step from "government as the protector of all" to "government as the distributor of money and favors."

Seriously, what the hell did the socialist "progressives" expect? Throughout recorded history, money has ALWAYS talked. The Golden Rule was/is/shall be "He that has the gold makes the rules."

So the lefties work and work and work for 100+ years to create that above-mentioned government transition and then are astonished and flabbergasted that the society they wanted to turn into a Worker's Paradise has instead turned into a Plutocracy?

LOL!

How do you know what I think of the other side? The subject of the thread was the conservative opinion of Obama's "presidentialness", and that's all I spoke to. I could have a similarly scathing argument about things that progressives do, but it's not relevant here so I didn't say anything about it. In your rush to point a finger at me, you've failed to pay attention and as a result, made a groundless claim.

But since your claim has been made, and we can see from your statement that you believe that the other side engages in the "exact same sort of behavior", why don't you go ahead and illuminate us all.

There's a marked difference between making a point and making a claim. Claims need to be backed up by argument, using things like reason, facts and examples before the point is made.

Your claim is Obama's incompetence. Go ahead and make your case, we're all dying to hear it.

That, unfortunately, only works if the State is sharply limited in it's powers. Because of the aforementioned Golden Rule. Otherwise, government inevitably becomes a tool of the wealthy and a yoke around the necks of everyone else. The "progressives" chose poorly in embracing their concept of God Government as the be-all and end-all fount of progress.

And my larger, I mean avoir du pois and girth. Not complexity. Complexity is something we assign to large and imposing problems that resemble a whale because admitting that the problem is a big, fat, institutionalized whale means we just have to harpoon the sonofab*tch and use the carcass for mulch, And then, that means we might not get our share of plaques, awards and Monopoly money being offered for ignoring / supporting / playing along with the idea that the whale is necessary. This is for illustrative purposes of a large thing. Whales are quite nice and I wish them no ill.

ChildOfBhaal: theknuckler_33: ChildOfBhaal: I seldom have much good to say about John Kerry. But his campaign, at least, never tried to charge me $3 for a bumper sticker when I requested one at the local campaign office. You're a politician asking for my support, not a fashionable brand, dammit. Admittedly, this is a somewhat different situation than Barry's wanting to charge me to advertise him. But, still...

Yes, it is different. Please continue the "But, still..." thought. Why is charging for inauguration souvenirs such a travesty?

Good argumentative technique. Put words ("travesty") in my mouth and call me out on a point that I've already conceded. While I reject the premise of your question, I will answer it. The $3 bumper sticker, the historic opting-out of federal funding in '08, and the sale of inaugural swag (however common the practice) are indicative of the commercialization of our political system. Am I wrong to be distressed by this?

/Fark Buckley v. Valeo. Money is not speech.

I think there is nothing to be distressed about by selling inauguration swag when the proceeds from those sales go to paying the expenses related to that inauguration. Frankly, I'm glad there's an effort to raise funds for it through voluntary purchases rather than our taxes.

And, while I see that you can purchase campaign bumper stickers and other materials online, I wonder if you would not have been able to get a bumper sticker for free at an Obama campaign office as you suggested in your OP.  If it is true that you couldn't get a free Obama bumper sticker at the campaign office (or any other campaign event for that matter), then I find that far more disturbing than selling inauguration swag. In fact, I wonder if that would even be legal as it seems like a forced campaign contribution in some way.

All systems work fine on paper and are, rabid "One True Way©" flag wavers notwithstanding, essentially just components that are utilized to meet whatever need that that given component is best applied to. Money, bureaucracies, capital and other accepted constructs in our society are not useless, in and of themselves. They are, like chainsaws, axes, pitchforks and fire, tools. They can also be weapons. The problem is, and always has been, user application error.

I actually went to the '09 inauguration (I had an invite from Senator Badass, but I was still a quarter-mile away, right across the reflecting pool) and a couple months later gave this t-shirt to a then-friend in her then-third-world hellhole.  (It's been developing rapidly, so I think its third-world membership may have been revoked.  And her status and location got some upgrades since then, too.)  ...her boobs were nicknamed "Barack" and "Joe" for quite some time, as a result.

I won't be there this time around (I got a full-time job shortly after the firs term started and am pretty sure I have to work) but it's okay, I don't like most of this year's designs as much.  The little inaugural committee lapel pin isn't half-bad, but I spend pretty damn little time in anything with a lapel... or a collar... or buttons...

MrHelpful: It speaks for itself. The guy is good at campaigning...everything else, he's worthless.

We already get that you think so, you're just repeating your earlier unsupported claim. The things is, if he's incompetent and worthless as a president, if that can be claimed as a true statement, then there must be some metrics by which his competence and worth are measured. Meaning that, in such an analysis, we would point to certain real-world indicators of how the office of the president is performing. Without understanding that those metrics exist, what they include and what they tell us, there's no logical means by which to claim the success or failure of a president.

Since you've made such a claim, we all expect that you've examined the facts in order to arrive at your conclusion. And since you're in here announcing your conclusion, we're giving you the opportunity to support it.

Unless of course you're just in here parroting the opinions that you've heard other people say, and have chosen to adopt those opinions as your own because those people belong to a group that you identify with. But I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're not just in here talking about things that you don't know anything about. So again, please, do go on.

I have found that Democratic campaigns are religious in their use of union shops. I was involved in a campaign where the cards and envelopes were donated by a volunteer, printed at campaign HQ, and a couple were returned to us with SCAB! written on them, because there was no union bug. People who care about unions care about them, and people who don't...don't. Ever notice at a union hall that there are signs up saying "We appreciate if only American union-made vehicles are parked in this lot"? It's not all of them, but the rank and file trade union members tend to be pretty consistent on these things.

Money, bureaucracies, capital and other accepted constructs in our society are not useless, in and of themselves. They are, like chainsaws, axes, pitchforks and fire, tools. They can also be weapons. The problem is, and always has been, user application error.

Hasty Generalization? Really? I thought better of you. Yes, of course, it is true in many cases - but so too with some liberals. For example, I'm quite good friends with a CPA who has his own office (his main business is taxes); we drink coffee together every morning at a local Starbucks, shoot the breeze, discuss politics, etc. He is a confirmed Obama supporter and "Big Government" liberal. I asked him once why. His response was that the bigger the government, the more complicated the taxes, and the more money he makes of off his clients.

And, of course, we all know that Big Money donors contribute to both parties.

And people like Al Gore, a confirmed liberal, seems to enjoy making lots of money off of carbon offsetand was desperate to sell his TV network to Al Jazeera before 1/1/13 to avoid increasing his tax liability.

There are money worshipers in both parties.

But I have a question: why is the worship of money, in and of itself, a bad thing? Isn't the point, rather, HOW you make money?

Everybody dies until I disagree with them.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: But I have a question: why is the worship of money, in and of itself, a bad thing?

I'd say that history has made the answer to that self-evident. Money is a piss poor god. So are child molesters in robes and prayer beads, but nobody is using them to dismantle entire nations, trade for crack or give to an arms dealer to kit you up to go and wipe out villages.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: Isn't the point, rather, HOW you make money?

"How" is simple. We let a central bank print it in cahoots with a tapped out treasury, backed by nothing. If we're all gonna play make believe, I'd say how yo USE it is a lot more important. Almost any tool works well as it was made to be used, and almost any tool can be a weapon. It's pretty much been user application error since Ogg set Ugg on fire.

He's black, he's a Democrat, and the right is butt-farking insane. Of course they're going to try to demonize him for acting like a human being. We're talking about the political party who spent four years on a nonstop crusade to prove him not an American, put making him a one-term president over the recovery and well-being of America, and tried to make a scandal of what condiments he puts on his hamburgers. The right threw a tantrum over how the poor picked-on rich are being made to suffer at the same time they tried to pass a record number of anti-women and anti-gay laws.

If you're expecting any kind of intelligence and rationality from the right, you'll have more luck expecting Winnie the Pooh to build a subway station on Jupiter.

partisan222: Just Another OC Homeless Guy: ChadM89: I love how the conservatives complain about Obama not being presidential enough in their view, while at the same time they're always bloviating about elitism, and how they want their leaders to be "regular folk" like their neighbors, and making guys like Joe The Plumber the public face of their party.

I agree. Interesting, though, that you don't comprehend the exact same sort of behavior on your side.

you mean, you don't understand why we won't celebrate phony populism? Like the idea that George W was just a regular ol' Texas rancher, born with grit in his teeth and a twinkle in his eye rather than the scion of an elite New England family, one of the wealthiest and most politically connected in history? Maybe we don't like that stuff because it's a lie.

I understand that exactly, because neither do I.

What is curious is that you assume I am "right wing" (in the modern world an essentially meaningless term).

When I talk about the same behavior on "your" part I refer, in part, to the extremely well documented history of the "left" being sucked into the various cults of personality that the socialist world worships. Castro, Lenin, Mao, Hugo, Stalin.... need I go on? To a smaller and less evil extent: Gore, Kerry, Obama. Every single one of these farkers, on both "left" and "right" was/is a lying sack of shiat and a sociopath. I recognize that fact, it is as clear to me as the nose on my face. The "right" is blind to it for their people. And you jokers are blind to it on your end.

THAT'S my point.

Bush took more vacations than any other president in history - he took over 1,000 days off! wtf are you complaining about "Obama's vacations" after that kind of abseteeism from a Republican?

/fun fact: Republican presidents hold the top spots for most vacation time: Bush, Harding, Reagan - top 3 - then FDR who was in office 12 years! It took a Dem 4 EXTRA years to be as lazy as a Rep in only 8

I don't give a shiat. Actually, the more time a politician takes off, the better I like it. If we could figure out a way to give Congress 365 days off with pay, I'd be all for it.

I'm just cheerfully agreeing with natas6.0 that you idiots were doing precisely the same thing 6 years ago that the idiots on the "right" are doing today, and that when people point that little fact out the "left" follows through with smear attacks to deflect attention from that fact.

And, BTW, if you actually READ what natas6.0 wrote, you will see that he isn't biatching about any of those things; he's merele pointing out the hypocrisy of the "left."

First, "good reason" is a really relative term, isn't it? What's a good reason for you might be a terrible reason for me. Or vicea versa. Sounds like you are projecting your belief set onto me (and, logically, everyone else on Fark).

Second, posting a lot may involve simply responding to people like you, or a back and forth argument. I've seen threads where some people posted 30 or 40 times when having a good roaring debate over something. Again, sounds like you are projecting your particular prejudices.

Nope.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: I thought better of you.

>>>>>Nope.

Sounds like it to me.

>>>>>Everybody dies until I disagree with them.

I hope that was a typo.

>>>>>I'd say that history has made the answer to that self-evident. Money is a piss poor god.

Circular. It's bad 'cause it's bad.

>>>>>So are child molesters in robes and prayer beads, but nobody is using them to dismantle entire nations, trade for crack or give to an arms dealer to kit you up to go and wipe out villages.

Guilt by False Comparison. And, BTW, religion HAS been used to do all those things.

>>>>>"How" is simple. We let a central bank print it in cahoots with a tapped out treasury, backed by nothing.

You sound bitter. Actually, I agree with you on that.

>>>>>> If we're all gonna play make believe, I'd say how yo USE it is a lot more important. Almost any tool works well as it was made to be used, and almost any tool can be a weapon. It's pretty much been user application error since Ogg set Ugg on fire.

I can make money (create wealth) by producing a product or service to sell (voluntary exchange) to other people. Or I can "make money" (rip off wealth) by producing a gun that forces you to give me your wallet, or producing a law (also backed up with a gun) that picks your pocket.

That difference is pretty damned important.

As for using money, yes, money is a tool. But it is - by it's essential attribute of being a "counter" for voluntary exchange - a particularly non-coercive tool (unlike some of the other components you mention in another post).

>>>>>"All systems work fine on paper and are, rabid "One True Way©" flag wavers notwithstanding, essentially just components that are utilized to meet whatever need that that given component is best applied to. Money, bureaucracies, capital and other accepted constructs in our society are not useless, in and of themselves. They are, like chainsaws, axes, pitchforks and fire, tools. They can also be weapons. The problem is, and always has been, user application error."

Other than lumping money with the other things, I agree with your post.

There are only two fundamental ways that men can relate to each other: trade, or force.

>>>>>"And my larger, I mean avoir du pois and girth. Whales are quite nice and I wish them no ill."

You sound bitter. And drunk. Think I'll join you.

I dunno. I've never seen somebody get a woman to drop her knickers for a chainsaw. It is, I contend, the ultimate coercive tool because we threw all of our eggs in it's imaginary basket and now we have to pretend that - since there's no actual wealth behind it - that it is, in and of itself, valuable. And of course, that notion is utter malarkey.

2013-01-04 11:24:25 AM
By the way, I didn't say "money is bad because it's bad". You attributed that to the statement I made regarding history having made self-evident that "money is a piss poor god", and I said that because, if you'll note the "history" part -so far - worshiping money has gotten us, precisely, here. And lately, all we seem to be doing is trying to clean up messes and put out fires while the money cardinals wave the incense ball and spout empty blessings from the window of the getaway car. How do you suppose they leveraged all that wealth into the trunk? Certainly not by using the cheap facade of money. *snort*

The "left" doesn't idealize any of those people. We ARE talking about people who think helping your fellow man and contributing to the health and upkeep of society is synonymous with communism, which is evil and horrible and Satanic.
