Gentoolive: Obamer picks another loser, what a surprise. If that moron tried to pick his nose, he'd put his eye out.

Good God that was weak. 1/10, only for spelling "moran" incorrectly.

ParaHandy: Rapmaster2000: "This is never a good roll for the government -- corporate welfare," said Paul Chesser, an associate fellow at the conservative-leaning National Legal and Policy Center. "Let the market put up the money, not the taxpayer."

I'm opposed to corporate relocation tax breaks because it picks winners and losers.

That's why I'm a Republican!

... but corporate welfare for highly profitable industries like oil is good?

I love that, corporate welfare. A made up term for made up crap. Liberals are dumb things.

It's Fox News...So it's semi-fiction.

It's amazing how little Republicans and Libertarians seem to know about how things work, how much they hate trying anything new (especially when it's going to be vital some day), and still biatch and cry about Obama no matter what the subject is.

bikerific: I'm OK with this, and here's why.

Alternative energy needs to be on the table. Every aspect of our way of life is tied up with abundant cheap energy. Right now fossil fuels are the only game in town, especially in the transportation sector, which is huge.

Ensuring a steady supply of energy is in the national interest.

We can argue about the exact amounts, but fossil fuels are finite. Demand for them is skyrocketing.

There is little market incentive at present for alternative energy. Fossil fuels are still relatively cheap, and provide good economic return. The market will not turn to alternative energy until the price of fossil fuels gets a lot higher, at which point it will be too late to make a major switch.

Yeah, there's going to be failures, slow development, dead ends, etc. The private market won't bear those. Fine. Let's bear those costs as a nation, and keep that ball rolling.

Government regularly invests in things that the nation needs but lack sufficient private marketization. Vaccines, roads, etc.

WHY DO YOU HATE CAPITALISMWHARGBLE?!?

vernonFL: This makes the Chevy Volt look like a resounding success.

When libs pick winners and losers, union thugs win and taxpayers lose, every time.

The Chevy Volt is a resounding success. GM sold triple the amount last year that they projected.

RabidJade: I guess we can worship the other side of the coin and have the feds invest in businesses that wouldn't be self sustaining without someone holding them up. Artificial capital production and no or little demand is always a way for a business to thrive. If a business can't even find venture capitalists, that's telling you something right there. I always find it funny people cry when someone questions businesses that get several millions dollars to just build a product without a market established for it. I guess people forget when you had several large established companies that started out selling very small and without federal millions being injected to them earlier in our nation's history. 1900's boot strap logic just muddies the waters of 2000's start-up logic though so lets look the other way and shell out tax payer funding for teetering or failing businesses.

CSB time: Look up Mid America Brick, which is located in Mexico, Missouri. Mexico and the surrounding area used to be a huge manufacturer of fire brick for use in steel kilns and the like, but since the steel industry in the US has died off (thanks, Reagan), most of the brick refractories in the area have closed, including AP Green in Mexico. Now, an entrepreneur who used to work at AP Green took a look at the shuttered plant and thought that he could refit a lot of the equipment into making house brick instead of fire brick. The problem was the plant was huge and falling apart, he couldn't afford to ramp up to either a modernized production system or the massive workforce necessary to use the inefficient manufacturing gear that was there, and while he had the knowledge and business savvy to run the plant, he didn't have the capital.

Well, hat in hand, he goes to the venture capitalists and they tell him to get farked, because there weren't any assets that could secure any sort of loan and the idea of making bricks in central Missouri was apparently completely ridiculous and would never work. So, instead, he applied for government small business loans, government loans designed to encourage the manufacturing sector, and local government subsidies to be able to afford the property. In the last two years, the plant has been refurbished into a completely modernized high capacity brick line that operates in the guts of the old refractory - it's reusing a vacant industrial facility, it's operating more efficiently than the old brick plant, and it's brought jobs back to the area. This is a perfect example of the government helping out a business where venture capital failed.

ltdanman44: Leopold Stotch: ltdanman44: Government funded experimental technology has been the driving force the last 50 years.

It spawns all kinds of spin-offs and start ups.

Yes, some fail. But the risk/reward is far to great to pass up.

Pfft. What has going to the Moon ever done for us?!

Health and medicine
1.1 Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)
1.2 Infrared ear thermometers
1.3 Ventricular assist device
1.4 Artificial limbs
1.5 Invisible Braces
1.6 Scratch-resistant Lenses
SNIP
Industrial productivity
7.1 Powdered lubricants
7.2 Improved mine safety
7.3 Food safety

And that is just from N.A.S.A alone

That's the joke.

He is 100% right.

Every single gigantic government spending idea Obama has, you guys fall in love with. You don't care about deficits, debt, or the fact nothing he has done has helped the economy. Obama can do no wrong.

If that's the case, then both sides ARE bad. I haven't seen Republicans do shiat about deficits, debt, or the economy either. They've actually done everything the could to make it worse because "The number-one job is to make Obama a one-term president"- McConnell. And since they lost that battle, they're doubling down on their bullshiat.

Romney thought that allowing rich people to not pay taxes would magically create jobs, destroying PBS would magically fix the deficit, and that starting a war with Iran would magically save Israel. Is that kind of delusion really what you wanted, Thunderpipes?
