I know it looks awkward, Subbs, but "ma'am" is the correct spelling. I promise. It comes from the word "madam," and is used as an informal substitute. See how that works?

Additional note: while researching the above post, I learned that "ma'am" is used in the UK only to refer to female royalty, and it would be inappropriate to address a random woman thusly. Such is a uniquely American colloquialism. However, if you are British, you do not get a pass on the headline. Unless you are sure that the woman you are addressing is a member of a Mayan people of southwestern Guatemala, you may not use "mam," and must write the more formal "madam."
