The New Normal is terrible. Though I completely disagree with the ultra-conservative mother of the surrogate mother, and recognise that that is the writers' intent. The writing for the character would probably for a drama, but for a comedy the character is basically a black hole that completely kills any humor around it. The rest of the show isn't all that great, but that character makes it go from "Meh" to unwatchable.

I own a TV, but hardly ever watch it. I can watch all my favorite shows commercial free on the internet though, so there's not much point to television for me.

It's the first decade in modern history where someone can be openly gay (to the point of it being reflected in popular culture and media) without it being something that is taboo, hidden, attacked, or apologized for. There are some stigmas to get through, but a tipping point has been reached. I think it more of a celebration, not really a forceful "big deal". It's an area of media that couldn't be developed until recently, and now it's open. There's going to be lots of attempts to capitalize on the market and develop it before it becomes fully integrated into the mainstream. It'll carry for a while as the political fight continues.

I have no issues with gay marriage or letting them adopt. does not affect me so I live and let live. (BTW I am not proud of this. I should be more out spoken about these issues but I fear the consequences. Please forgive me)

eh, I can see the TV eventually becoming used solely for multi-person viewing (i.e. movies) or console gaming, but as it stands currently: you are generally watching shows on your computer that were made for a TV audience.

The problem with it is that it seems like it's trying to make a point more than out is trying to be funny. Most annoying, it's a point which belongs more in 1992 (when Pat Buchanon was challenging the nomination of President Bush on a platform of "make gay illegal and throw out all legal immigrants") than in 2012.

The problem with it is that it seems like it's trying to make a point more than out is trying to be funny. I kind of agree. Though I think it would be a tough task, I think they could make a caricature of a horribly racist, homophobic conservative work, but the character they created in the end just doesn't work well in the comedy genre. A truly despicable character generally doesn't work in comedy, even if the character is a villain of sorts.

I cringed more with that characterization than I did with Marc St. James on Ugly Betty. Mostly because Thomas falls into ye olde "immoral/wicked gay" category while Marc St. James was a hilarious henchmen with a rich back story.
