I think that's the Tea Party/Republican's goal. Make borrowing money so expensive through credit downgrades that the government has no choice but to slash and burn all spending (excluding the military, of course).

I am absolutely shocked, shocked I tell you, that a political party would intentionally harm the country in order to make the president of a different party look bad.

I mean, why would anyone ever respond to positive incentive like that?

Tell me more about how the Democrats tried to ruin the US credit rating while Reagan and Bush II were president.

Although Moody's believes that the debt limit will eventually be raised and that the risk of default on Treasury bonds is extremely low, this confluence of events adds uncertainty to the outcome of negotiations.

You hear that republicans? biatching about not wanting to pay for things you've already decided to buy adds uncertainty. And we all know how dangerous that is to the economy.

The rating agency expects that further fiscal measures are likely to be taken in coming months that would result in lower future budget deficits, which are necessary if the negative outlook on the government's bond rating is to be returned to stable. On the other hand, lack of further deficit reduction measures could affect the rating negatively

Yep, the whole downgrade threat is about the limit.

"Moody's did observe a trend in the declining quality of mortgage-backed securities as early as 2003, that it is not the role of Moody's nor any other credit rating agency to serve as the "gate-keeper" of the securities market and that their ratings are merely opinions, not definitive advice or recommendation on the stability or substantiality of a particular financial instrument." - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Moody's, Raymond McDaniel, testifying before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission

The immediate beneficiaries of Moody's ratings were the securities issuers, those institutions which provided these securities profited immensely from their continued distribution throughout the market, as did Moody's who received sizeable fees to rate said instruments.

So why not take direction from "the free market". Bribe the issuers of the ratings. Oh wait, that's illegal when the government does it but not the financial institutions. Hmmmm me thinks there's something wrong with the process; And yet we still bow down to these fools.

We have nuclear subs, if we go under money won't mean anything at all for a few million years.

Did I specifically say this was strictly a Republican problem?

Republicans are just better at it. That's the only difference.

Didn't read TFA, but I'm already loving the new payroll tax hikes. $60 less on my check this week, meaning $120 less a month. That was my discretionary fund, now it's my gas budget. All so that millionaires don't have to pay anything more on money they have just sitting in an account.

You need to update that graph. Obama's tax cuts from yesterday brought him up to if no over parity to Bush and he still has 4 more years to go.

Your "new payroll tax hikes" are returning social security taxes to the rate they'd been at for years. They were temporarily lowered as a stimulus measure during the recession.

Not new.

Not a hike.

Temporary measure.

You got out of paying some taxes for a while, but not forever. Blame millionaires all you want, maybe they're the reason you broke that dish the other night, too.

Moody's having enough credibility even to be quoted as an authority even on a blog seems pretty bizarre to me seeing as how clearly they have proven that they can't do the job they were supposed to be doing (not that they are alone in this).

It might have been easier to stomach if many companies hadn't decided the recession was a great reason to shiatcan raises and COLAs.

Nothing wrong with being a millionaire. On the other hand, guys like Romney who only got rich by being BORN rich don't deserve any adulation.
