Have no problem with congressional dysfunction A government that is unable to do anything for me is also likely to be unable to do anything too me.

Besides anybody who was around for the 1995/96 budget battles know this is nothing new.

When they shut down and only run "essential" services you now have a good idea where to start cutting spending.

I'm thinking sometime, in the middle of March, as Boehner is giving a speech to the House, there will be a loud commotion in the aisles. Cantor, Goehmert and Bachmann will emerge, moving as one, with determination, toward the lectern. The security footage will be blurry, but the steely glint of knives drawn will be clearly visible. The video will spread like wildfire... John Boehner, falling to the floor, looking with shocked disbelief at the blood weltering from many mortal wounds. His final words will not be audible, but they will be clearly visible on his lips as he stares, dying, at his supposed second-in-command... "Et tea, Parte?"

It's like when a family only buys food and shuts off the heat and lights and lets the car get impounded because they're not essential. Damn you, Balrog Hussein Fartbongo for not running the country like a non-sovereign domestic household!

You know how I know you don't live in MD/DC/VA?

// yes, it would be nice if so much of our economy wasn't tied up with the feds
// but a government shutdown does not help fix or alleviate that, it only depresses the area
// oh, and we pay the taxes that go to your dickwater state (or further downstate, if you live south of Quantico)
// besides which, science researchers - whose work may prove invaluable years later - are not considered "essential"
// 800,000 workers were furloughed for 5 days in 1996; wanna guess what that does to an economy in fragile recovery (rather than one in pretty robust shape)?

The economy will rebound strongly because all those people will stop mooching off the government teat and instead use their entrepreneurial bootstraps to create wealth for America!

Hmm, so does that mean that the one who wants to tax the 1% (or redistribute the latifundia) to end a financial crisis ends up beaten to death by the very benches of the assembly?

/not that I have anything specific in mind...

Say what you will about death by violence, but it sure beats being sewn up in a sack with poisonous vipers.

I just love the symbolism. I mean - despite it being recorded as such over and over in the sources- it just couldn't have happened like that. Right?

Although the Assembly did get nice marble benches out of it afterwards, so that was nice.

Actually, I'm gonna run out in a few days. Don't bother, though, I appreciate the gesture, but I never have time to bother with TF threads and LiterLand is amusing enough for me. It is a nice pat on the back, though.

The only time I remember not getting paid on time (twice)was when Carter was in office. I was already out when the 95 budget battles happened but I think they got paid being deemed essential. Besides I said it was a good place to start not all inclusive. In 95 the Social Security Administration managed to get by with just 10% of their work force (5,000 out of 50,000). Seems that they have more overhead than necessary.

As far as I'm concerned Eric Cantor is one of the biggest problems in the country. And a traitor to boot.
