We can banish earworms from our brains

... by stopping them with an act of will, not much different than using your will to lift an eyebrow.

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way

Thread is amusing, but that article was crap. I don't know Ira Hyman from a hole in the wall, but he doesn't seem to have read much on this subject. Research over the last twenty years has shown the neurological underpinnings of earworms -- you can see them in fMRI scans.

Basically, the issue is cognitive compartmentalization. You may think you hate that tune, but part of your brain loves it and is looping it even when it's below the level of your consciousness. When your conscious mind is 'quiet' enough, all of a sudden you can hear that idiot part of your brain playing that tape over and over again obsessively.

Best mundane way to banish them, based on actual testing, is, yes, to find an earworm you don't hate and then use that to displace ones you do. They can be temporarily 'cured' using transcranial magnetic stimulation, or by taking a nap, but that isn't always practical.

Consider yourself very, very lucky.
It's played over just about every store intercom in my area.
