ArkAngel: I got the big foam pickaxe for my ex this Christmas

I got my son the pick and my daughter the sword. I play with them just as much :)

Minecraft was, for me, the WoW killer. Especially since those pricks at NCSoft killed CoH.

My first thought exactly.

My son would love this. Too bad he's too young to be a beer drinker.

He does have a massive, unhealthy addiction to Minecraft.

Somebody explain Minecraft to me. I just don't get it - I downloaded and tried to play the trial but I thought it sucked giant Rhinocerous balls.

My understanding was that it was basically a world building game with some "monster" avoidance. Since Civilization is my favorite game ever and I'm mentally worn out from all the empire management stuff, I thought a minimalist world-building game would be just the thing I needed to enjoy gaming again. Graphics aren't particularly important to me as my other favorite games are the original Doom games, so I really thought this Minecraft thing would be great. I had idiot relatives that played it, but they could only speak of it in disjointed words... "Well, you have the blocks and you put them here, and oh I dunno, it's just Minecraft..."

WTF Fark? I've been to the website, I've read it over and over again trying to unlock the secret of what could be sofa king interesting about this game... Vat de fook????

Still friends with my ex (and her new fiancee). I've actually been at her place since Dec. 15th. I'm currently living out of my car and I came up for the holidays to spend time with my son.

It's a nearly infinite (bigger than the surface of the earth) procedurally created world with endless exploration and building possibilities.

I enjoy building automatic machines using redstone.
My niece likes to run a farm on peaceful mode.
On Multiplayer we are working on getting geared up and making runs at the boss fights.
It's what you make of it and they are constantly adding new content to play with.

In the latest update fireworks were added. Me and my niece made a giant gravity driven rollercoaster with automatic firework launchers that launched the fireworks as you were approaching the different sections. My niece decided where the coaster was to go and made all the fireworks (mostly pink ones....) while I made the timing and wiring to fire the more complex patterns (like a sequential firing pattern when the coaster was skimming along the top of a body of water).

If you seriously want to give it a try, start with this video series. But, it's a giant sandbox world with absolutely no endgame. Civ (as much as I love it) is a very goal-oriented game. You make your own goals in Minecraft. If you don't like that, it's not for you.

holdeestrufs,
Minecraft is two things:

1) a survival game where you must craft tools from resources you gathered and harvest food to survive from starvation and fight enemies. Exploration and mining are a big part of this.

2) a construction game where you build things that you feel like building using the blocks and items that are available. Think Legos, but on a larger scale.

You can do either one separately. Survival Mode or Creative Mode. Or you can try to do them both at the same time, which is what I do, by trying to create things in Survival Mode.

What you are describing is nothing like what I tried to play - The demo I got from the website... it was me... a bunch of trees... limited action for the character... and a timer. Scary music started to play and I had to run around avoiding things trying to get me (I never saw them)... all of which was quasi-consistent with the description of the demo/game would be. How do I find this game YOU are apparently playing?

I think *I* am the problem and just want to know what it is *I* am missing...

It's very flexible; it can be a poor map editor, poor voxel-based modeler, poor digital circuit sim, poor MMO, FarmVille...

For extra fun, switch your food production entirely to turkeys. I brought along six hens on embark, and one year forgot to bring the eggs in for cooking resulting in ~70 new turkey chicks.

Thanksgiving was wonderful that year.

I've been learning that the best way to control cats and keep your animals from fighting is to slaughter the whole lot of them. That and to be ahead of the curve on clothing needs.

Not to mention the bones for your bone crafters. Cat based economies are awesome.

It's possible that you just simply never understood crafting.

here is a partial checklist for day 1
Punch a tree
craft wood into wood planks
a 2x2 grid of wood planks creates a crafting table
place the crafting table
you now have a 3x3 crafting grid
build a wooden pickaxe (3 wood planks 2 sticks)
cut 16 stone
build a stone axe stone pickaxe and a furnace.
cut a bunch of wood
put wood in both slots of the furnace to make charcoal
build a door
kill animals and for food and wool
build a bed
wall off a small cave (place the door somewhere in the wall) put your bed, crafting table and furnace in it
build a chest.

FinFangFark: Been playing on the Xbox, but thinking about jumping over to the PC version.  Is it worth it?

After rolling two worlds on the 360 on the new update and finding two nether fortresses with zero netherwart growing in them I would say that yes the PC version is worth it.

Seriously having to find out that you wont be able to brew potions after taking all that time to find diamonds is a serious pain in the ass.

When I first moved in after embark, I found my hunters were bringing down Elephants and Rhinos left and right. Needless to say, my bone crafting industry got an early jumpstart.

/still learning though
//I have invasions off while I'm learning though it greatly decreases the fun
///though fun still ensues in other forms - like being behind on clothing
////or tunneling into a giant cave spider lair and having the whole fortress throwing themselves at it (that was the end of my first ever fortress)
