Al Jazeera is a freaking awesome news station. They aired an interview with Marine Le Pen (the head of the French National Front) a couple of weeks ago, and the interviewer asked her questions that I'm certain made her uncomfortable to answer. Yet she answered them all the same rather than get all huffy and march off the set like Christine O'Donnell did with Piers Morgan.

LOL.  I hope this actually means that everyone who now gets Current will be getting Al Jazeera, because they've been blacklisted it from almost every cable market in the US, save a couple.

Oddly, I don't get cable. But I can still see Al Jazeera, because they stream their content. That's something most American news networks don't do.

I stream it online too, but it would be nice to get it as part of the package, and I hope that if this happens, their type of reporting would be a positive influence on the other shiatty cable channels, which is pretty much all of them. I've long since given up on Fox, but CNN and MSNBC need to step up their damn game. I'm sick of hearing crap about Kim Kardashian and her baby daddy passed off as "news". I can come here for that anytime. ;)

Two points that I'm sure the Derp brigade will willfully ignore as this continues to be reported over the next few days:

1. Al-Jazeera is one of the closest things to actual fair and unbiased journalism out there. The contrast between its journalistic quality and that of and most Western networks is striking.

2. Just because something has Arabic roots, it still has a 99.9999% chance of NOT being terrorism-related.

TLC is already wreaking devastating damage to the Western intellect. Just wait a year or two and just walk in and take the place.

They're actually the last "hard" news outlet on TV anymore.  They cover all sorts of stuff other networks ignore, and don't spend all day covering missing blond teenagers like CNN and the other networks.

/A few years ago I'd have said BBC was still hard news, but not so much anymore.

Real 'Murcan cable companies are still going to run the channel, they'll just shut off the audio and replace it with an endless loop of Lee Greenwood and occasionally superimpose an image of a monster truck driven by a crying eagle.

I've always found that a bit amusing, actually.  The Prince must make quite a profit on his investment for him to continue subsidizing people who hate him and everyone that looks like him.

And GE owns MSBNC. It's almost like politics doesn't really matter and it's all about ratings... nah, that's just crazy talk.

Carth: Al Jazeera receives much of its funding from the Qatar government. Qatar main legal system is Sharia law. Whats worse is that in 2010 there was a wikileaks cable alleging the Qatar government uses Al Jazeera to further its political causes. I can't wait for fox news to flip out.

Fox News' biggest non-Murdoch shareholder is Al Waleed Bin Talal, a Saudi Prince, where Sharia is the law of the land.

I suspect Fox News won't mention it.

Farkers - fat alcoholic slobs as they may be - are generally far more politically well-informed than average. So why wouldn't they appreciate a solid news channel with superb global coverage, created from the cream of the world's news organisations?

Nice try. We all know it's because most Farkers are pinko commie soshulist Kenyan usurper apologists that support islamofascist regimes. They can't stand the Real Truth (tm) from the Fair and Balanced reporting only Fox News can provide. That's why the facetious post was made. And it was dripping with sarcasm, but you're too far into the ObamaKoolAid to notice. You need Jesus.

Al Jazeera is one of the few stations that actually gives the point of view from the Arab street as opposed to the official line touted by the West. Sounds very similar to what Current purportedly provides for the United States (though, to be honest, I didn't get to watch much of it since it was yanked from my cable package very shortly after Olbie joined up with them).

The screws on the planet have been torqued way up and that's only going to continue. I don't think they want to truth getting anywhere near a North American audience. It's like the Newsweek covers around the world compared to the domestic Newsweek, all whitewash.

When it caters to your biases, of course it seems so. Neoconservatives think Fox is one of the most unbiased stations they've seen.

My one tea party aunt once told me that I wasn't "being fair and balanced like Fox News."

That's distressing to hear. I take it that she's too far along to be deprogrammed?

She's getting worse, most of my relatives are. They're so far into the echo chamber that it's like they don't live in the same universe. What gets me is that back when I was growing up they all looked askance at my branch of the family for being involved in politics but now they're obsessed.

So we have a cable channel with virtually no viewership, hence no revenues, and Al Gore decides to unload it for a big pile of money. Other than Gore being saved from his own stupidity by Al Jazeera, what's the news story here?

Time Warner has already announced that it will not carry the new network. Any other drops forthcoming?

Here's the real burning question: If we leave the folks like Eliot Spitzer, Jennifer Granholm, Kieth Olbermann, Joy Behar, etc. alone in the studio and allow them to keep ranting; will any of them notice the difference? Will any of them have any fewer viewers?

FTFAAs you may know, Al Jazeera is funded by the government of Qatar, which is the United States' closest ally in the Gulf Region, and is where the United States bases its Middle East Air Force operations.  I have had first-hand knowledge of Qatar's policies as a result of my tenure on the Board of The Brookings Institution.  The Saban Center for Middle East Policy is a joint venture of The Brookings Institution and Qatar, and it has offices in Washington, DC and Doha, Qatar.  Its purpose is to propose practical public policies that can contribute to peace in the Middle East, and its founding Director is my friend, Martin Indyk, the former U.S. Ambassador to Israel.

Ugh. Reading that made me feel dirty, queasy and nauseous. Like I've just walked in on an incestuous threesome.

EngineerAU: It looks like AJ is buying Current strictly for their slot on many cable systems. This has worked for other networks in the past but I wonder if it'll be the same here. It wouldn't surprise me to see many systems drop them because tea party folks calling to cancel their cable subscription.

Time Warner already said they're gone. In that case it has nothing to do with Tea Partiers (TW has almost entirely highly urban systems) and everything to do with the fact that they've been looking to cut low-ratings channels and the change of control gave them the opening they needed in this case.

I think Current was Olbermann's last chance. He was given the most sweetheart deal he could possibly get, he had the whole damn network built around him, and he still got himself fired within a year. He'll be lucky if any network, anywhere, ever hires him again.
