It is a lot more effective than have something called "The Learning Channel" which broadcasts Honey Booboo

Down to 97 as of right now, according to the post count on the main page.

And because nobody else has posted this yet:

/not holding my breath

Say hi to al-Jazeera's boss, Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani, a relative of the Qatari ruling family, who has a net worth of $3.5 billion. Which is not quite Murdoch money but will certainly keep him farting through silk for the rest of his days.

So now you get the best of corporate-controlled AND state-controlled media. Enjoy!

Farkers - fat alcoholic slobs as they may be - are generally far more politically well-informed than average. So why wouldn't they appreciate a solid news channel with superb global coverage, created from the cream of the world's news organisations?

Nice try. We all know it's because most Farkers are pinko commie soshulist Kenyan usurper apologists that support islamofascist regimes. They can't stand the Real Truth (tm) from the Fair and Balanced reporting only Fox News can provide. That's why the facetious post was made. And it was dripping with sarcasm, but you're too far into the ObamaKoolAid to notice. You need Jesus.

That statement is the truth.

Farkers are ant-American, they don't think people should work, they think success should be punished, guns outlawed, freedom of speech gotten rid of, and America is too strong and we need to be weakened.

Not a single argument any of you could make, because that describes you perfectly.

Gulper Eel: Mr. Right: Other than Gore being saved from his own stupidity by Al Jazeera, what's the news story here?

None of the usual contingent of Gaia-lovers at Fark have noted the irony of Mr. Greener-Than-Thou Nobel Peace Prize making some mighty sweet coin thanks to oil money from a shady Qatari mutli-billionaire, nor has there been a peep from Camp Class Warfare about how the deal was pushed through on Tuesday so as to minimize Gore's tax nut. Clearly he's a conniving plutocrat using devious means to avoid paying his fair share.

As for al-Jazeera, sometimes they are not as neutral as their cheerleaders would believe.

"Orders were given not to tackle any Saudi issue without referring to the higher management," one Jazeera newsroom employee wrote in an e-mail message. "All dissident voices disappeared from our screens."

The employee noted that coverage of Saudi Arabia was always politically motivated at Al Jazeera - in the past, top management used to sometimes force-feed the reluctant news staff negative material about Saudi Arabia, apparently to placate the Qatari leadership. But he added that the recent changes were seen in the newsroom as an even more naked assertion of political will.

"To improve their relations with Qatar, the Saudis wanted to silence Al Jazeera," he wrote. "They got what they wanted."

Used to be a big fan, but when the Libya fiasco came up it became very clear they had marching orders to support Ghaddafi's overthrow, and that trend became even more pronounced with in their reporting on Syria. I know a lot of their reporting is good and they had excellent documentaries, but I no longer watch it.

2013-01-03 09:45:35 AM
Glad to see this.

It's really pitiful that American cable providers don't simply carry Al Jeezera. AJE does some great reporting and it's illuminating to have a non-US perspective on world events. US citizens would benefit from being exposed to it.

But alas, no, Americans are too xenophobic/paranoid/disinterested.

/sigh

That was a program commissioned by C4's Documentary department (and not evenproduced by), which has literally nothing to do with C4 News (which is a wing of ITN). They are not only different companies, neither actually created it regardless. It should also be said that it even described itself as presenting the minority view-point of a small group, which is exactly what it did.

Bear in mind that they're not simply buying Current to take it's slot to broadcast (London-based) AJE on.. that'd be silly since really there is no "slot"; providers can pretty much add and drop channels almost at-will (as evidenced by TWC dropping Current as soon as the sale was announced).

Al Jazeera is planning on turning Current into Al Jazeera America with it's own NYC-based studios and staff (roughly double the size of Current's.. er.. current staff).

Gulper Eel: Philip Francis Queeg: Do tell how pushing the deal through on Tuesday January 1, 2013 minimized Gore's tax obligation.

On that point I stand corrected, although the Times article clearly reveals Gore's desire to take unfair advantage of the poor downtrodden masses. He may have bee thwarted this time, but will be back for more, as the rapacious wealthy are wont to do.

We get it. Al Gore has money so his argument is invalid.

Al fat pervert Gore would team up with the Devil if it lined his pockets with dirty money. I think Al Jiz would have been better off starting a news station from scratch. I doubt the 3,000 to 5,000 daily viewers who watch Current TV are worth the horrible reputation and performance history of the network.

How dare they not present a fair and balanced view of the perpetrators of a genocide! And by fair and balanced, I don't mean fair and balanced (which they did), I mean presenting regime propaganda with an equal footing with facts on the ground.

Gosling: vygramul: This is very interesting.  I was kind of hoping Current TV would be successful, partly because I wanted Olbermann to have a show.  But apparently, he's just too big a dick.  Nevertheless, this might improve the station.

I think Current was Olbermann's last chance. He was given the most sweetheart deal he could possibly get, he had the whole damn network built around him, and he still got himself fired within a year. He'll be lucky if any network, anywhere, ever hires him again.

He definitely seems to need some anger management treatment.  Maybe he has untreated high blood pressure or something.  He had some flashes of brilliance during the 2008 political cycle, but once that was over his anger seemed to be not righteous indignation but simply a personality trait.

I concur that he'll be lucky if he works anywhere ever again.

/CSB: I met a former intern of his who had nothing good to say and vocalized some real indictments of his value as a human being

What I like is that they don't cut away to pundits telling us what we're supposed to think about something.  If there's fighting in the streets in Egypt, the US media will show 30 seconds of fighting and then have pundits talk about it while showing the same clip over and over in a small window in the corner.  Flip to AJ, and you will watch the live feed for hours.

Al Gore pushes the sale of his network to an anti-American biased broadcaster before Jan 1 for tax reasons. Then, retires to another wing in his fancy mansion for more donuts.

It's cool and hip when a Democrat does that.

This funny story came through yesterday at the same time Andrew Sullivan announced he was starting a subscription site. If he had paid attention to the internet since 1998, he would know liberals don't pay their money for anything. Ever.

I know I'm just troll feeding, but it would be helpful to point out that while Al Jazeera is state owned (so is BBC technically), the state that owns them, Qatar, has been a strong US ally since its inception as a nation in 1971 when it gained independence, through a US-sponsored act, from Britain.
