Peter von Nostrand: You should have seen him, Little Jerry was bobbing and weaving... strutting his stuff[www.sportsgrid.com image 630x354]
Gyrfalcon: So here's a question, just because I have a weird mind that way. Assuming you had two roosters--normal roosters, just two ordinary chickens--and they were doing what roosters do, which is fight, and you and a couple friends were sitting there and made some informal bets on which chicken would win the fight. Is that bad, first of all, and did you and your friends just participate in an illegal cockfight? After all, chickens do fight, sometimes pretty brutally and can even kill each other--are owners supposed to intervene any time two animals are fighting, especially if its natural behavior that has to be done to maintain order in the flock or herd? And if yes, then is it de facto "cockfighting" if you own two male chickens at any time, knowing they're going to fight? If no, then at what point exactly does the cruelty cross the line into illegal cockfighting? When the money goes down? When the spurs go on?And if all blood sports should be illegal, then why stop at pit fighting? Why allow trophy hunting, or even game hunting unless you're so starving you need deer to eat? It's not like you can't go to the grocery store.
orclover: You and yer friends are in the clear until somebody straps on some spurs on the chickens or the first bet is placed.
Wulfman: orclover: You and yer friends are in the clear until somebody straps on some spurs on the chickens or the first bet is placed. No, I'm not sure what state you got your GED in law from but it's illegal in most of the USA even without wagers or spurs. We have issues here in southern and western Virginia with people coming in from North Carolina for the fights, because in NC it's a felony but in Virginia it's only a misdemeanor and that's only if there's betting. I think the spurs fall under a separate statute here./when the roosters tangle you best look away//sure it's a euphemism
angryjd: Of all the time I spent learning Law from "GED Law School", I must have skipped the day when they taught the fine art of Cockfighting law so I guess that must mean I am a legal hack, right?

The fact that your original comment didn't discuss actual cockfighting and only touched on the gambling aspect is probably why nobody called you a hack or questioned your bona fides.
