Aimee and Ashlee Nelson weren't raised to do things alike and did not plan the births to come at the same time. In fact, their due dates were about a week apart.

But Donavyn Scott Bratten was born just after noon on the last day of 2012. Aiden Lee Alan Dilts made his appearance at about 2 p.m.

Well, I suppose they came by the stupidly spelled trendy name thing honestly. Sigh.

You'll also be a grandparent. Congratulations, Gramps.

I'd rather be a young grandfather, than the grandfather of children with names that scream out "WalMart shopper!" Whatever happened to solid names like "Roger" and "Melissa"? Why always with the "en", "an", "ee" or "ti" ending? It's as if they are cementing their child's future in mediocrity.

What a headline that would make.

2013-01-02 02:36:03 PM
I knew two identical twins that had their kids about a week apart. The first one got pregnant (17 or 18 years old) so the other one did too so she wouldn't get all the attention. Classy chicks these two were. It's a shame, they were really cute, but they've turned into trailer trash.

2013-01-02 02:37:13 PM
If the twins are in fact identical, the kids are half siblings, not cousins.

2013-01-02 02:38:13 PM
And the kids will be half brothers - genetically.

Father of identical boys (2 years old).

God help me.

They are both, actually. Relatedness is not quite as linear as it may appear in the mirror.

OH I'm sure they fight each other for attention, but what they receive isn't what they'd hoped for from others. And I'll bet they've spent their entire lives trying to figure out why.

In terms of relatedness, they are not cousins. They are half-sibs.

Mean amount of shared genetic material:
Full sibs 50%,
Half sibs 25%
(first) cousins 12.5%

The term "cousin", unmodified, is generally too vague to be of much use anyway. The english language has pretty imprecise kinship terminology.

All assuming no inbreeding in parent lines, of couse. Not sure if that's a safe assumption, as twins tend to be a hereditary trait and who knows who married a half-sib way back when and only though they were marrying a first cousin.

ph0rk: as twins tend to be a hereditary trait

This is true only for fraternal twins. Women who ovulate multiple eggs is a hereditary trait. Embryos splitting within 6 days of fertilization is not.

Interesting.

I am able (this instant) to find primary data calculated heritability scores for this, and given what we now know about epigenetics it seems unlikely that there is no familial predisposition. I am not a biologist, but it seems unlikely that it is purely random. You'd need some pretty awesome multigenerational data to be able to calculate this - probably with something like the Netherlands data.

Of course, the fact that many dizygotic twins think they're monozygotic complicates things further.

My main point was that these are half-sibs raised apart, not cousins. Most inbreeding screener type questions for marriage licenses, etc, don't account for this, and in the 25 states that allow first cousin marriages, these two would be legally able to marry (if the appropriate genders) and have offspring.

Luckily, Ohio isn't one of those states.

I'm curious where you found your data. Our doctor told us monozygotic twins are random, and a quick Google search brings up a slew of "fraternal twins are hereditary and identical twins are not" results.

I've done a fair amount of reading on twins (as I mentioned upthread - got identical 2 year olds) and everything I've ever seen says the same thing. Fraternal - genetic predisposition. Identical - random event.

I wish there was a proven genetic link because then my wife wouldn't want to try for another. She is not a geneticist but she's a vet so has a solid bio background. Can't BS her.

We actually had our guys confirmed with DNA testing - mostly because it was driving us nuts looking at them - some days they are exactly alike, others they look like two different kids (to us).

You didn't know before they were born? Ours were confirmed identical at 8 weeks.
