I was at Walmart the other day to pick up a new rifle, and I paid for a rifle for the guy behind me. I hope he paid it forward and it continues to be paid forward until everyone in America is armed with rifles. Only then will we be safe from our tyrannical government.

I do that all the time. Sometimes I'm waiting for the drive through line to pass so I can join it and someone waves me in front. I always throw $2 buck towards whatever they ordered when I pay.

Before Illinois went to electronic tolls - I remember Jonathon Brandmeier (sp?) would encourage the toll train of love where you would pay for your toll and the person behind you. Tolls were $.25 or $.50 at the time.

When I get to the window, I always say, "I want to pay for that guy's order" and point to the car that just left. The worker looks at me and says, "They already paid". I give them a shrug and , "I guess I was too late then, oh well."

I say, "You know how people are always paying for other people's orders?" I get back, "Oh, you want to pay for the next guy's order?". I say, "No, I want them to pay for mine."

Once the person in front of me paid for me. I did not do the same, because I ordered a $1.50 small cup if coffee and the car in back of me was an Escalade full of middle aged women. I wasnt about to pay 30 bucks for their four Carmel chocolate mocha iced frappe mochacino deluxe super triple espressos. Especially since they didn't appear to need my charity anyway. I just wanted my cheap crappy cup of coffee and not pay 30 bucks for it because someone in front of me payed an extra buck and a half.

The drive through pay-for-the-next person thing is so stupid. That story always comes out as some example of how cool humanity is. No, all it is is evidence of social pressure. You get some random person who starts the chain because they are feeling generous. Then the next person pulls up expecting to pay but is instead greeted with the pay it forward act. The simple thing to do is just do it for the next person. That is like saying Happy Birthday on your friend's wall on Facebook. It is literally the LEAST you can do. At the end of the day it is a bunch of jerks paying a different amount for their morning coffee and then one smart guy who just decides to take the freebie.

If you want to do something nice, try actually doing something nice. Help an old person, volunteer, pull over for that troubled motorist, etc. Buying coffee in some drive through because the jerk in front of you did the same is pretty lame.

Yes, that. The story doesn't really make a lot of logical sense, when you step back and look at it. The first guy bought one coffee for the last guy. That's all that really happened when you boil it down. The rest of it is just pointless self-congratulation.
