FTFA: Speaking in Havana, Mr Maduro said he had visited Mr Chavez in hospital twice since arriving on Saturday. "We have faith in God"...

How can socialists even *believe* in God? I thought it went against their credo.

Big deal if his health never clears.
Dictators have lengthy careers.
As Kim Il-Sung says:
"Yeah, I'm still the Prez.
So what if I'm dead twenty years?"

Suddenly everyone believes in God when faced with your own certain, imminent death. The brash, insolence of ego rules until that moment.

Socialism and atheism have often been associated but there's no reason they have to be. Socialism and religion can work well together like in liberation theology, kibbutzes, and the very early Christian church.

Arguably, if you only start believing on your deathbed, it's still brash, insolent ego - the belief that, after a lifetime of putting gods behind you, that they'll suddenly listen to your plea at the last moment.

That said, Voltaire notably didn't blink when faced with eternity. When asked on his deathbed to renounce Satan, he reportedly replied, "Now is not the time to be making enemies."

Don't worry, there will be others. There were plenty of Americans who were vocally supportive of the USSR too. They'll just find another brutal socialist dictator to idolize and it will be just as easy to recognize them.

Well it's not. Communists on the other hand has a problem with religion, "opium of the people" and all that.

Hugo Chavez and Robert Mugabe are two people I hope are towards the top of the Grim Reaper's list in 2013.
Unfortunately, both those countries will take at least a decade and lots of foreign assistance to fix the damage done.

So, you don't know much about the subject? It's ok to just stay silent. Chavez has always been of the mind that the exclusion of of religion was a mistake for Central American socialism AND is of the school that socialism goes hand in hand with Christianity better than Marx thought it did.

And besides, have you ever considered that the numinous realization of God that you propose is something that specifically happens at death as natural, chemical reaction in the brain to calm us - probably with some evolutionary advantage, such as if one member of the herd goes down for the predator without a continued struggle, it improves the chances that the younger, stronger ones will escape - and not an idiotic matter of abandoning prior "insolence"?

What a wild reach that one is. Yes, there are many bio-chemical changes that happen just prior to death. To concoct some belief that these bio-chemical releases are for the benefit of the herd is a beaute.

Comparing the USSR to Venezuela... sure. Just tell me how many wars Venezuela has begun and all those cheap resources the USSR shared with the US. Also, please go on and tell me how many elections Stalin held.

I'll wait.

Chavez isn't a dictator, rather a fascist. And a sort of anti-imperial fascist at that, and quite succesful... right until he died (happening really soon). I wonder what'll happen to Venezuela now, since so much power was centered on just one guy.

It's not my "concoction," genius. It's been proposed by those more knowledgeable than me. You'll note I prefaced it with a "probably some evolutionary advantage" and then a "such as." Don't strain yourself on reading comprehension, though.

Venezuela has had a taste of kleptocracy, democracy as practiced by a kleptomaniac. They are in the Detroit death spiral and will elect whoever promises to steal as much from their betters as they can and give it to them, after keeping the majority for themselves in nice secure Swiss bank accounts a la Putin. I predict large imports of vodka and Colt 45 or Cobra will drain their oil revenues and a fascination with rap music will addle their brains.

I read plenty. Never seen one word to convince me he was anything worse than a meh tier srongman with a loud mouth and a few interesting social policies.

Sure, he's an asshole but he's hardly a standout amongst the assholes of the world. Yet for some reason just name dropping the guy sets off full blown colon catastrophes.
