Carrying a few extra pounds 'could protect the heart'

I think they missed an opportunity to bold, italicize, underline, and increase the font size of the words "a few."

The person who figured out tectonic plates was laughed at and ridiculed for it until the day he died.

There was a doctor who suggested medical students should wash their hands after handling dead bodies before going to help deliver babies because he noticed certain "correlations", and he was basically thrown out for suggesting it.

Then there was this guy who suggested spontaneous generation was bogus and all the smartest people in the world said he was a fool.

Now, what were you saying? This study may very well be bad but at least give it time to be proven such.

And in every generation, for every historical discovery, there are countless -- hundreds, if not thousands -- of claims that deserve all the ridicule they get before getting tossed into history's dustbin.

Considering this study used people who were losing weight due to illness (including addictions) to fill out the "thin" category, I'm guessing this is one for the dustbin.

Great.

This is EXACTLY thew kind of news we need here in America.

It sounds a lot like the one or two studies that insist AGW isn't happening, regardless of the 2000 studies that say it is.

As stated, you may be right, but at least give it time to be proven such and don't run around screaming it's wrong because all the smart people say so.

Yes, I also suspect our "ideal" BMI is a little on the low side. So the people we consider to be ideal BMI are in general underweight and the people who are a just above ideal BMI are healthy. This is of course for the typical person. People who are fit and who exercise regularly have a different fat/muscle percentage. If you don't exercise and out of shape, and your BMI is still "ideal" your probably underweight.

So, fat people are less likely to actually live. Cool!

Um, peer review doesn't work that way.  Some studies take more time to be discredited because the flaws are buried deeper into the methodology.  This ain't it.  Contrary to popular belief, a lot of shiat studies get tossed without much more than a sniff because they really are crap.  It's like some fatass tries out for an NFL camp and gets tossed after the first heat.  You'd be the guy going, "Well, let's give him a chance. . ."  No, you'd do that for a marginal candidate that deserves the scrutiny, not someone who took nine seconds on the 40-yard dash.  This is a one-and-done.  When academics are calling a study "rubbish", they're saving us time.

You're basically doing the "patient pundit" act, trying to look smart by declaring everything inconclusive.

And, in that world, there are only 2 Star Wars movies, one Jaws, and one Matrix movie.

Psst. your BMI is utterly meaningless.  It was invented by a UN agency who was worried about the earth's "Carrying capacity"  for humans and wants to encourage smaller people so we'll theorectically consume less resources.  It is, in no way, shape, or form, an indicator of overall "healthiness" as most NBA and NFL players are considered "morbidly obese" when you apply BMI formulas

believe that if you like, and if it comforts you, believe that your are especially healthy, and believe that is solely due to your superior sense of virtue and  iron will.   But none of those things are necessarily true.  You may have the genetics for a metabolism tht doesn't store excess body fat, and good for you, but I doesn;t necessarily mean you are healthy.  There may be plaque in your arteries, or fat building up around your liver, that will prove fatal to you someday, but you'll find that out entirely too late

There's one other major difference: those guys weren't paid for their studies by corporations their conclusions benefitted. Who funded this study, the High Fructose Corn Syrup Association?

TFA also goes on to quote the respected scientist himself saying "We were only looking at mortality - not health." In other words megafatties will live longer and have even worse obesity-related health problems the rest of us have to pay for.

You'd think that by the time somebody lost both his feet to uncontrolled diabetes he'd have figured out how to avoid "outgrowing" one electric wheelchair after another. Sheesh. And Medicaid won't even buy me cheap dentures.

1) Realize that exercise programs, nutrition instuction and behavioral therapies qualify as medical treatments.

Why won't Medicaid pay for a basic membership at the Y for those who can really use it? It's got to be cheaper than all those pills and mobility scooters.

2) Require that people who get diabetes medication and all that other good stuff enroll in, attend and finish those aforementioned programs to keep getting treated for the consequences of morbid obesity.

Exercise facilities ought to be within the financial reach and geographical range of everyone anyway. Society should invest at least as much in health as it does in illness.

3) Those who are unwilling or unable to control their obesity and lessen their health problems should be left to fend for themselves, if not simply euthanized, and then used for animal food, whether as Fancy Feast or for the carnivores at the zoo.

The latter would be easier: carry the carcass into the enclosure on a fork lift and then back out. They could also charge extra to watch the animals eat.
By the way, I just weighed myself: my BMI has been pretty steady over the past decade or so at ~27. If provided with an incentive and/or a bit of assistance I might lose a few of those 20 extra pounds.

Maybe I should be a test case for a new program? They could, oh, put me on a track and make me chase the stripper.
