My favorite celebrity "Polaroid" was a pic of when James Woods went home for Christmas. His brother took a pic of him standing next to the Christmas tree holding two gold Christmas balls in front of his crotch.

His mother was very disappointed in him and his brother when she got the roll back from the developers.

You used to be able to find that pic on the Intratubes but now it's all full of KardashiatTM

thecpt: Anyways, just googled myself. First thing that pops up is FB and Linkedin profile with matching photos. Seems like a safe precaution.

Don't you realize!? Google knows who you are, and knows you're egosearching yourself, so it only shows you your own results! It won't show the drunken frat pictures someone tagged a guy who looks vaguely like you unless you do it from your boss's computer....

Lee Jackson Beauregard: FTFA: Syracuse, Rochester and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore are among the universities that offer such online tools to their students free of charge, realizing ill-considered Web profiles of drunken frat parties, prank videos and worse can doom graduates to a lifetime of unemployment - even if the pages are somebody else's with the same name.

Holy fark, but hiring managers are idiots.

Also, I'd like to see how they manage to help you clean up someone else's profile.

People use Facebook with their real names?

willfullyobscure: Give me a first and last and a single clue and I could find any one of you in ten minutes and tell you what color socks you had on. You think Google is the gatekeeper? Google is the LAST resort for professional information seekers. It's the cream of the crud. Pathetic, this thread is.

Ok, I'm intrigued.

What other ways do you prefer?
Not alta vista I'm guessing.

There are big companies that will sell your secrets to other big companies. ChoicePoint was a well known personal data aggregator.

Lexis-Nexis and access to computerized public records that aren't indexed on the WWW but are connected to the internet are a start. There's hoops to jump through and relationships that need to be built ("hey, can I log on your records?" "fark you" "meet my lawyer" "fark you but OK")

Not gonna lie, Lexis-Nexis is worth the absurd amount of money they charge.

dickfreckle: As long as it's not you, but someone with your common name and age doing stupid sh*t in Facebook photos, why not include a small photo of yourself with the resume?

Photos reveal things that equal-opportunity employers don't want to be caught knowing.  Photos alarm employers, and they get annoyed.  You don't want to annoy them.

odinsposse: I have a very unique name so any Google search for "my first and last name" only returns results for me. Luckily it's all tame stuff. About the worst thing you can find is my steam profile where you can see how much time I've wasted in Skyrim.

However I have a friend with a somewhat common name who is absolutely invisible. There's no trace of her online at all. It's very impressive. She just always used fake names and nicknames online so her real name isn't connected to anything she has done online.

Even the name in my Fark profile is fake. While I often make somewhat personal posts (the neighborhood I live in, my tastes in scotch, et al), you would have to be a serious ninja to figure out I was a Fark user and then connect "dickfreckle" with my real name. I'm sure it's possible, but not something some human resources person is going to want to deal with.

And I don't use Facebook, period (no I'm not an old, grumpy man).

Yeah, you and others have pointed this out. But there has to be a professional-looking way to let a potential employer know that it's not you blowing a goat in that pic. Lots of people share same names and ages. Your middle name narrows it down vastly, but even then some asshole with your exact name and roughly the same age is posting stupid photos to Facebook.

I was tempted to say don't work for any company big enough to have an HR department. But we're talking about recent college grads who rarely have the connections to get into a company that isn't a soul-sucking hellhole.

GIS for "my full name" bunch of results that are not me.
regular Google search for "my full name" told me i'm spelling my middle name wrong and i found 0 of anything relating to me.

Googled my name and I am surprised at how many people share my first and last name.

One's a model in the UK and there's a few minor actresses. WIN
