TwistedFark: I'm shocked that I'm apparently the first person in this thread to say this -

Life Model Decoy.

Its why comics are really no different or better than soap operas.

I've thought that as well.

And we know they exist in that universe.

Agent Phil Coulson: [Over telephone] Mr Stark, we need to talk.
Tony Stark: You have reached the life model decoy of Tony Stark, please leave a message.
Agent Phil Coulson: This is urgent.
Tony Stark: Then leave it urgently.

Isn't it possible that that's a throwaway line, the kind both Stark and Downey Jr are notorious for? I know, this is Marvel, so any retarded-ass "we have to get him from 'dead' to 'alive', so even if we have to have Captain Marvel, Bucky Barnes' spirit and Master Splinter fight Mecha-Satan on Phobos while The Punisher, Serpentor and Mr Mxpytzlyk rescue Phil Coulson from a mirror-world filled with oral surgeons, dammit, we're going balls-deep!" but leave him the fark alone.

If, in Avengers 2: Revenge of the Avengerening, you absolutely must address your Coulson-boner, studio-people, do it in flashback. Perhaps one of the fifty times he was on screen for a one-liner, the shot cut before he said something like "The secret to defeating Galactus is to put a 1930 double-struck Lincoln penny at Earth's magnetic North Pole during a solar eclipse."

LDM90: Wolf892: Sorry, can someone help me out here...what's the big deal with this agent Collusion fella? He's a normal human, he's not even the boss, and he gets himself killed...it's like Bobba Fet...shows up on screen for a moment and then gets his ass killed, and yet everyone goes lord gaga over him....why? Please explain.

Thanks.

He was in Iron Man 1&2, Thor, and Captain America. He was a tease for an eventual Avengers movie. People came to like him. Not to mention he's a righteous dude.

The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him.

I felt it was a bad play the way Fury tried to use Coulson's death to shame Stark and Rogers into cooperating. Loki had already done most of the work getting everybody mad at him, and Fury overplayed it. He risked having some of the anger directed at him since really both Stark and Rodgers are smart enough to see through the ploy.

But it did show that Fury is certainly not perfect and was pretty desperate at that point.

Ishkur: Alphax: Maria Hill, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. becomes the Scarlet Witch, Magneto's daughter? Seems unlikely.

and Ultron is nowhere to be seen. So what.

movie backstory != comics backstory

The violinist Coulson was dating seems a more likely candidate for Wanda than Maria Hill.

Look at his wee little face compared to his gigantic forehead. If I had better photoshop skills I'd have some fun with this...

Alphax: Gunther: r1niceboy: There was so much scope for a well crafted story with various characters exorcising various demons

If you were actually expecting this to happen in a superhero team-up holiday blockbuster, it's you who's the idiot, not them.

You'd have to at least double the length of the movie to have each hero have that much personal struggle onscreen.

meanwhile each scene had to be split equally between the leads. stark says something. cut to cap. cut to banner. cut to thor. back to stark and repeat.

The xmen movies knew how to ensemble. No one gives a shiat about that character, so no speaking parts

Not as much of a mess as the last Batman film. And it was more fun.

it was boring. the first hour was unnecessary

Those were my thoughts on it too. There was so much scope for a well crafted story with various characters exorcising various demons, but they decided to destroy New York and give no-one much to do besides Iron Man and Hulk. If Coulson had to sacrifice himself, he should have done so for a less sucky movie.

Alphax: S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series? (blows the dust off my TV remote)

The Ultimate Spiderman series was actually kind of goofy fun. And it did have Agent Coulson.
