We're just talking reasonable restrictions here, we dodge the issue of suicide control all the time until something comes along to make us confront it.

Nobody needs that many different ways to take their life, if we put stronger restrictions and bans on suicide we can really cut down on the self-murder rate in the US.

How much would it cost to install railings in each subway, with gaps aligned with where the doors end up when the train stops? Is this even feasible? Do all of the trains have their doors in the same places? Can a conductor stop with enough precision to keep all the doors in front of the gates? You'd think they could rig it so that would automatically happen. There are only, what... 70 or 80 subway stations in NY? I feel like this wouldn't cost much more than $1 or 2M.

Yeah, NYC subway was once several different 'private' lines that had very different design criteria (number of cars per train, length of cars, turning radius, etc), so each set of stations are different.

In addition, there are so many train cars in the system, it is never possible to replace them all at once, so you will always have different cars in the fleet at any one time (some cars are 40+ years old). Think of the golden gate bridge. It gets repainted something like every 7 years, and it takes 7 years to paint, so as soon as they finish the job, they go back to the start and go over again. There is a constant rotation, and over those 40 years, tech changes a lot. for example, the 'newer' cars in the system did away with many of the conductor booths, which changed the door locations (they used to be offset from each other side to side, now they align right across, but older off-set door cars are still used as well).

She almost made it though...." would start. Call it a "trauma fund" to "assist conductors in dealing with trauma".

11th Ave - Hudson Yards/Javits Center. The MTA has already scrapped a new station at 42nd & 10th due to cost overruns. I'd rather them not scrap the whole project for unmaintainable doors.

good luck getting the permits to buy a gun in ny, especially nyc. if they get it illegally and end up surviving, they'll face a mandatory minimum of 3 years. easier to tie some weight to yourself and jump off major bridge that crosses a body of water.
