He paid to have his daughter married off to some guy that was socially beneath her. She does not look happy in the pic; just pissed off and accepting her fate.

/not a happy story

Before clicking the link, am I the only one who thought he'd killed his wife?

2013-01-01 09:59:03 PM
Okay I guess. But she looks like only a two cow wife.

I bet there's a new Groom out there that very much disagrees.

Dowry was so expensive because the chick was a traitor to the Klingons.

Never forget!

Remember back when wealth was celebrated in the United States and punished in Communist China?

2013-01-01 10:11:58 PM
Thrice in my life I've turned down hefty dowries.

Never been happier.

2013-01-01 10:12:44 PM
Of course that dowry is also kind of a suggestion as to the level at which you should be supporting her and any children from this marriage.

/also he may have more than one, a lot of the rich have a kid or two overseas to avoid one child
//or just pay some fees to get around it

I'm going to step out on a limb here and say that there is some financial incentive akin to a tax shelter that make this a financially wise move. I say this with zero knowledge of how the Chinese economy works, but with the skepticism that I have for all decisions regarding finance.

Is same-sex marriage a go in China? I might be able able to switch teams for a dowry like that.

As the son in law I'd be happy as hell with that dowry. But on the other hand I bet there are strings attached the son in law don't realize. You think you just marry into 100 million scot free?

On second look, she does look like she might prefer to be on top.

2013-01-01 10:37:38 PM
How can they possibly fail to be happy.  She knows that it took 100 million to get the guy to marry her.  He knows that he's an investment for the family business.

BLISS.

So some billionaire gives millions to his daughter's wedding dowry. This is news we can all relate to.

2013-01-01 10:47:28 PM
I dunno. Last year my FIL checked my mil into a mental health facility for a few months. I think my guy is at least in the running.

Honorable mention?

Meh, not worth it to become what is essentially an indentured servant , which is what son-in-law will be.

Mahana, you ugly!

I wish I could've subbed in the bride's name, but TFA didn't appear to think that that was an important fact to include.

how is this guy the best EVAR, when it lists two other fathers who each gave well over 10 times as much?

He already is that, now he's getting paid to be that, I'd take the deal.

Just imagine what an angry coont the mother-in-law will be.

/not sure if the money/status would be worth it

I thought this was going to be about the rich chinese guy from last year that refuses to accept that his daughter is a lesbian so this a is a pleasant alternative.

This. I'd be afraid that somewhere in the fine print it would give them the right to harvest my organs in the event the father needs a liver or something.

If they've known each other since they were 5 years old my guess is that he isn't some horrible surprise. Also, dowry is an ancient custom, not a payoff to get rid of your daughter.

Considering they've known each other since childhood, if she's sick of his shiat, he's probably sick of her shiat too. That would mean the parents wanted them to get married.

2013-01-02 12:06:15 AM
I'd do her for a tenth of that.

You misspelled "ancient customary payoff to get rid of your daughter"

A man has to have some standards.

Heard about this on the radio a couple months ago. I think the story was that the daughter was a lesbian and the father wanted her to have a normal family.

They were childhood sweethearts - from primary school forwards. This is one of the relatively scarce instances of a Chinese girl marrying for love.

Am I the only one that said "awwww" in their Inside Voice when he read about the charity donations? Maybe they should donate to a charity that gives forever homes to all the cats they can't heat/

I used to date a girl in high school whose dad bought her a trip to Europe to get her away from me. That's sort of the same thing.

Or the parents get to supervise and direct any sexual encounters the newlyweds have until a son is born...

This is the best father-in-law until you find out that he's actually in charge of a huge criminal syndicate, and he makes you start sending "messages" (beatings). Oh wait.. that was LOST.

Oh humanity, you still disappoint me.
