I only drank Jolt once, and it was a revelation. I think I was 12 or so. I saw god. I think I saw my ancestors. The only thing that could have made it better is if I were in a desert on some spiritual journey.

"All the sugar and twice the caffeine!"  I loved how Jolt Cola claimed that it was "inspired by the need for a better tasting soft drink" yet not a single person I knew who ever drank the stuff did it for the flavor.  Nope, we did it to stay awake when we absolutely had to and didn't feel like drinking convenience store coffee.

When did Jolt ever make that claim? They were targeting people like me who stayed up all night and made no bones about it.

There are recipes floating around for making your own artificial Ecto Cooler. I've yet to try one, mainly because I don't know if tangerine juice is a readily available commodity around me.

Ah, the fine print. I missed that. The old can was all but a memory by the time I was old enough to drink it without sneaking it past my mother. In truth, though, it did taste better than Coke and RC, though (IMO) not Pepsi.

And as far as the "inspired by the need for a better tasting soft drink" line.... for some reason that comes off to me the same as the "Created by a School Teacher" line on "Airborne".... silly, unnecessary taglines on the product.

The plain can that says "Soda"? That's what us oldsters call "Generic". Used to be a whole line of products. Everything from "Soda" to "Corn Flakes" and "Beer" to "Cigarettes". Got replaced when store brands started getting popular.

Generic brand stuff sort of went through a period where there was just a stark package with a label. I remember more of the plain yellow packaging, saying things like "BREAD" or "MACARONI AND CHEESE PRODUCT", but it's the same deal.

I only ever got that when I was on my way to Pittsburgh. Laurel Springs had the concession contract, HoJo's had the rest area contract, and Gulf had the gas contract. Now they're tearing down and rebuilding the rest areas and my youth is rapidly disappearing. But I can still get Cherikee Red if I look for it.

Anyone remember Pepsi Storm? They eventually pulled the caffeine out and renamed it Sierra Mist for some reason. At the time it seemed like Pepsi's answer to Coke's Surge, which was stupid because Pepsi already made Mtn Dew.

MrEricSir: Anyone remember Pepsi Storm? They eventually pulled the caffeine out and renamed it Sierra Mist for some reason.

Actually wait, let me correct that. Storm only had caffeine if you bought it in cans/bottles. If you got it from a soda fountain it didn't have caffeine. PepsiCo is run by dicks, basically.

As for the Pepsi Holiday Spice, I never had it, but I would expect it is their version of julmust, which is horrible stuff. The Scandinavians love it, but they also hate root beer, I have a theory that if you love root beer, you'd hate julmust.

dletter: Generic beer:

Yup, back in the 80's I kept this swill in the fridge for when beer moochers would show up at my pad.

/I made cover sleeves for my decent beer so it appeared i was drinking horsepiss too.

Wasn't OK Soda the one with the 1-800 number on the can that you could call to hear pre-recorded jokes and whatnot?

Quantum Apostrophe: Alright, not a can, but I remember liking this a lot.

Maybe you could 3D print yourself up some?

Cerebral Knievel: Maybe I could if I listened to the hype. Too bad the reality is more along the lines of plastic novelties and trinkets. Maybe I could use some 1980s nanorobotic assemblers instead? How did those pan out? Hmmm.... Or maybe the space cola factories from the 1960s? Or maybe wait a few more decades for our brave and selfless billionaires to mine asteroids and make Java Cola from them?

Add me to the Jolt, Tab, Ecto Cooler generation. My friends and I used to bike to the local convenience store for a bottle of Jolt and some candy. We would then return to the neighborhood high as kites on sugar and caffeine. Lemon Heads, Fireballs, Boston Baked Beans FTW. Would take Ecto Cooler to school in juice boxes/pouches back in grade school.

Odd note...my older step brother (9 yeas older) had a friend named Tab. Being as I was about 7, it always gave me a chuckle.

I'd kill for some Apple Slice. Kroger has some apple soda, but it isn't near as good.

Kewl! Didn't realize it was still being made. I'll have to hunt some up.

Back in the 70's, when I was a wee tyke, that stuff was in all the soda machines at Elk Neck State Park. It was one of the key elements of summertime.

I've only seen it in glass, nice silk screen label, so I'm assuming it's been put out as a real sugar Nostalgia brand. Various fruit flavors, and the rootbeer of course. Ima gonna grab a bottle of that tomorrow morning just 'cuz now

Of course, Ecto Cooler was only a marketing tie-in to the "Ghostbusters" film. Before that, it was known as Citrus Cooler. And I recall it (and all Hi-C flavors) was available in 46-ounce cans. Good times!

The Bestest: wow.. I was gonna post some stuff but every damn soda I miss has already been posted here

7-up Gold
Josta
Crystal Pepsi
Royal Crown Draft
Surge

well, Vault hasn't been posted I guess, and it's only very recently deceased

Another +1 for Ski. Diet Ski is also fantastic.

But Vault. Oh, how I miss Vault Zero. A few of my friends tried it and declared it to be the most vile substance on earth, but I loved it so.

/Pours out a Surge for our fallen sodas.
