After reading the SI article my guess is state politicians want to spend the $60 million on state programs and reduce regular state funding to those programs by $60 million to come out even. The NCAA wants to spread the money around the country, making Pennsylvania poorer as a result of the fine.

Dear Penn State Alumni;
The longer you keep the child rape scandal in the public eye, the worse you look. Raping kids is bad. Covering it up to protect the reputation of your football team is also bad. Continuing to complain about the punishment for the cover-up does more to damage the reputation of your football program than simply accepting the punishment and moving on. Farking stop it already.

The state legislature is trying to keep the money in state to help the people actually affected by the scandal -- who are, you know, in Pennsylvania. By taking 75% of the fine out of state, you're not really helping the victims at all.

This is not about challenging the findings or suggesting that the university should have been able to keep the cover up going.

It is, but in weird ways. Penn State is run by an independent organization, funded by the state, exempt from governmental disclosure laws, and essentially allowed to do whatever it damn well pleases.

I guess it depends on who the victims are. I don't recall reading that the $60 million was supposed to go to Sandusky's victims only. Isn't it supposed to go to programs for all victims of child sexual abuse?

I guess it depends on who the victims are. I don't recall reading that the $60 million was supposed to go to Sandusky's victims only. Isn't it supposed to go to programs for all victims of child sexual abuse?

Not directly, but funneling money into programs in Idaho aren't going to help the victims at all.

However, that's also likely the "Think of the children!" ploy of the legislature who is seeing if they can get their money back.

As someone who lived in, and subsequently escaped from, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I can say with some authority that the rest of the country would hate that shiathole with even more vehemence if they knew how horrible it really is. It is an absolute hellscape peopled with the most horrifying grotesques imaginable. Even thinking about the place makes me feel like I need a Silkwood shower.

Couldn't agree more. This whole lawsuit is just him trying to save his ass since the new attorney general is going after him for how he failed to prosecute Sandusky back in 1998.

There are two major reasons this is happening:

1. Gov Corbett was the Attorney General who started the prosecution of Sandusky. Then he "pressured" some of the PSU Board of Trustees to fire Paterno. There are many people in this State who still treat Paterno as a God and as such would never ever vote for the man who sullied Paterno's name. This is a ploy by Corbett to save himself some face and maybe secure reelection in 2014.

2. Many of Corbett's supporters were big supporters of Second Mile, Sandusky's "charity." When Second Mile went under, those cushy local charity positions dried up. With 75% of the fine money going to out of state organizations, its harder to funnel money back to these supporters under the guise of "charity work." Corbett wants to keep that fine money in state so he can "pay-off" his supporters.

PA's newly elected Attorney and Auditor Generals are Democrats and have it out for Corbett. He needs all the support he can get...

Frequently not the states. These days less than 10% usually comes from the state. Grants, tuition (meaning student loans and Pell grants), foundations and other sources make up the lion's share of funding. I don't know about Pedo State's funding but I'd be astonished if the state's burden for this fine proportional to all sources of school funding was more than $5 million.

The fine was to be paid out of athletics revenues. If the university chooses to burn state taxpayer dollars instead, that's their choice.

...he started nothing. He abandoned it all in the name of going for his governorship. If he'd had the integrity he's trying to project, Sandusky would've been in prison a decade ago and PSU wouldn't have gotten nearly the sanctions it did.

I don't know of anyone who thinks the students knew what Sandusky was doing.

Most people who look at this sad affair with any honesty and objectivity DO realize that the student and alumni "worship" of the football program and deification of Paterno contributed to the aura of sanctity of the program. Most objective observers realize that the administration tried to hush the whole thing up in order to protect the football program. If the students and alumni had recognized that the football program was composed of mere fallible mortals, the cover up would not have occurred. Sandusky would have been jailed right away, and the NCAA punishments would not have been necessary.

If one of the TAs in the English Lit department had been caught molesting kids, s/he would have been dragged away in irons, because the students and alumni are not fanatical cultists about the English Lit program.

When people consider a football team (or any other group- I'm looking at you, priests and ministers) to be so important that they cannot be questioned, abuses are bound to take place. Abusive people seek out "protected" positions like that, so that they can engage in their abuses with impunity. That's exactly what Sandusky did. The students and alumni didn't know what he was doing, but their cult worship of the football program made it possible, so IMO, they have to take some of the responsibility.

The quibble seems to be whether the politicians can take credit for somehow funnelling $60 million, instead of just a tiny fraction of that, back into educating Pennsylvanians about child rape? Imagine that discussion:

"Look, we're happy Penn State has to pay up. But, we'd like to take that money, all of it, and redirect it solely at Pennsylvania. It'd allow us to redirect child-abuse education allocations to other areas of the state, so that the reprehensible crimes committed by Penn State end up a win-win for Pennsylvania. The NCAA gets credit for being hard on child rape, and we get credit for exploiting child rape to lower our deficit by sixy mil. Now, we're prepared to sue to ensure that happens..."

As an alum, I would like to see the entire athletic program nuked from orbit.
When I was at a party last year in NH, I was in a circle of gentlemen discussing of all things, Russian Literature. Everyone in the circle was impressively informed on the subject and one gent brought up the fact that he had only studied it for "art's sake" to keep from becoming bored during finals. Where did you go to college, I asked. Oh, I'm a Harvard MIT grad.
You are? chimed in the next gent, why so am I. And so it went, around the circle until they came to me.
All of them were Harvard MIT grads, except me.
I went to PSU and studied it by sitting in on classes that weren't full, as a monitor.
I never even graduated.
Never went to games, and didn't watch them or keep score. Couldn't care less about it. I was there to get an education, degree be dammed.

They still send me requests to donate them money. I don't even have a sheepskin with my name on it.
Football is nothing. It is not worth the resources and liability. You do more good having concerts in the stadium and selling tickets to see real talent.

No one at the party thought less of me for my lack of a degree. I could hold my own amongst them conversing about anything, from polymer science resonance, to recent demarcation of third world nations and still hold my liquor.

I have a new-found respect for the Harvard community, and a lack of it for the PSU community. At least they never once brought up how they rubbed one out over a high score achieved by a tight pants mouth-breather who now sells used cars in Buzzkill, PA.

The governor of that state of disrepute is an asshole and has sealed his legacy. He isn't pounding his desk asking what happened to Ray Gricar. He's trying to save his seat. What a joke. Sadly, the bitter, bible and gun clutching voters of his state will probably allow him to continue to get fat on their dime.

As far as the Governor is concerned (and probably the family of Ray Gricar), isn't knowing what happened to your hotshot driving DA important as well? This one bothers me. I don't know why, but it doesn't really seem to me that folks really want to dig into that rockpile.

Huh, I had kind of pushed it out of my mind that an alarming number of high-ranking Penn State officials covered-up and enabled the forcible sodomy of underage boys for years, and that a large number of the student body actually rioted in support of a pedophile enabler.
