I used to roll my eyes at threads like this, since the pope isn't looting other corps and laying off thousands, and while he has use of the church's riches, he doesn't own them.

on the other hand;

I went to midnight mass with/to appease my mom and was, seeing red, enraged.

I was enraged by learning what the Bishop's reaction to us uppity parishioner's demanding, in no uncertain terms, to put the house in order; was to change the wording of the spoken responses.

The responses were altered to make us think more about our own sins as a none to subtle glass houses attempt, and/or brainwash us into thinking we are much to wretched to dare criticize the oh so holy Bishops

I hung on because I know of an actual priest who works very hard at helping the disadvantaged in my local area but after this... fark em.

And put it where? Some of those places don't even exist any more, and some of them wouldn't take it back if it was offered (or would destroy it if they did--I don't think returning the treasures pillaged from, say, Samarkand, would benefit if they were returned to Afghanistan).

I'd be happy myself if the Vatican were turned into a free museum, and the Pope and his minions had to live a life of poverty and etc., in some humble cell out back, like the servants of Christ were supposed to do.

Joseph was not a menial laborer. He was a highly skilled craftsman. A menial laborer would not have been able to travel to be enrolled like he did, nor would he have been able to marry a temple virgin, heavenly messengers or no. His purported geneology specifically calls him out as in the royal line of David, and his child was seen as such a threat to the Roman-backed Herrodic line that they risked a rebellion with a widespread infanticide to eliminate the new heir in the traditional lineage.

Joseph, and by birthright Jesus, was a 1%er. The myth of the menial laborer is romanticism propagated by those with a very poor grasp of what life was like at that time and in that place.

The difference between Jesus and the Pope was a willingness to give up a life of privelege to fight a religious institution that turned teachings into oppressive laws that placed adherence to a code before the welfare of the people.

Bad PR - It's a biatch. It's up to those 99% "good people" that truly want to to stop the church from doing these things to force them to change. If this takes walking away, then that's the moral thing to do. Go find a more "fair trade" religion that doesn't poke its nose into sexuality or politics.
Think about it - If your God is a real "just and merciful" entity, then he'll actually reward you for these actions - not being a scared toady supporting the church just so you get your ticket to the afterlife, but actually doing the right thing.
But, if you think that your god is the jealous, nasty, egotistical, vindictive entity who flooded the world to kill almost everyone because they refused to worship him, then, too bad.

2013-01-01 08:33:36 PM
The last time I was in a Catholic church the priest was hitting the parishioners up for eighty thousand dollars for a life size nativity set from Italy. The church already had a beautiful, and I'm sure expensive, nativity set. But no, the old one wasn't good enough. It made me sick to think what that money could have done. But no, instead of feeding the hungry, or paying for a homeless shelter, that money was wasted on shiny baubles. Now multiply that waste times thousands of churches who take money from people who are told that their money is going to help people. The thought of how much money is siphoned away from helping people is disgusting.

Those hospitals don't seem to charge any less than Secular Generall and those parochial schools are pretty damned expensive.

I don't deny that the Catholic Church does charity work but when you compare its charity work with it's total assets it starts looking a whole lot less impressive.

I don't agree with this assessment at all. When it comes to child molestation, I believe that the leaders in the catholic church repeatedly chose to protect priests over children. This enables the priests to be child molesters. It's only the catholics that defend the leaders who could be labeled as enablers for child molestation. Go ahead and argue that the logic is wrong.

It's not really anything to me. I have nothing to do with the Catholic Church though I was raised Catholic. I know for a fact that a lot of good is done at the individual and parish level; less at the diocesan and Vatican level. My "Happy Holidays" was an attack in the War on Christmas aimed at someone whining about how mean we are to the Catholic Church.

I used to try to cut muslims a break since it wasn't the rank and file muslims that were bombing buildings but I eventually got to the point where I realized that without the belief in a fast track to paradise, you wouldn't have all those suicide bombers so the problem wasn't the terrorists themselves but Islam itself.

Impressive.... From your link:

And because (Sunni) Islam, unlike other monotheistic religions, lacks a universally recognized center of legitimacy, such as the Vatican for the Catholics, there is no universally recognized central body able to determine who is a "true" Muslim and who is not.

So, there is no over-arching organization protecting these terrorists or their terrorist-supporting imans. This, as your article points out, is exactly opposite of the catholic church.

Whereas toddlers are not usually in a position to put forth this level of argument, nor decide it is worth while to do so, I think this thread is about whether or not the Pope is rich and simultaneously denounces those who seek extravagant materialistic gains. I am sure the papal life is grand confined luxury and all, but I would not care to trade positions. There's too much self-flagellation at dusk and church time for me to stomach.

trappedspirit: Gyrfalcon: Ah, I love religion threads on Fark. Like watching a couple toddlers fighting over which of their favorite cartoons is real: "No, Scooby-Doo is really alive!" "Nuh-uh, My Little Pony, you poopy-head!" No, neither of your cartoon images of reality is true, it's a lot more complicated than you want to imagine, and you all sound like a bunch of idiots with your silly accusations, and most of you should know it.

I'd agree, except the "nuh-uh! catholics are child molesters!" "No, Muslims are terrorists!" arguments tend to undermine your statement.

Comparing the new year to a journey, he prayed that it "may lead on a path to peace for every person and every family, for each country and for the whole world".

Sure. Then there will be another Pope. Lather, rinse, repeat. It'll never turn out the way you hope it will. Never.

Yes you have every right to be a jackass even though I'm not sure why you think that's desirable or acceptable. Is civility too much to ask or are you trying to emulate the same kind of zealotry that the tea party folks have been peddling?

So, to clarify. You feel that opposing hypocrites and pedophile enablers is being "an asshole" and allowing them to go about their business unopposed is "being civil".

I would not like to live in your world. I prefer that hypocrites and pedophile enablers are denounced at every opportunity and done so with great prejudice.

Aw man, a Catholic-bashing thread, and I missed it? Here's my $0.02 anyway.

I've been to Peru, and I've seen the ruins of Inca villages that were blasted apart by greedy Spaniards looking for gold and silver. I've also seen in the next town over a church with altars made of that very same gold and silver. It boggles me that so many Peruvians (and South Americans in general) would continue to follow Catholicism, even knowing their own history.

Catholicism, just like any other works-based religion (or any dependency-creating organization, for that matter), is nothing more than a system of control. Real Christianity is liberating, in that I am accountable to no man but Jesus himself. There are no rules, rituals, priests, hierarchies, or anything else standing between me and God. The Bible is the single greatest threat to the Catholic system, because anyone who actually sits down and reads it cover-to-cover would find that it's impossible to reconcile Catholic teachings to what the Bible actually says.

So another Democrat gave a speech about the EEEEVIL Rich and how they don't pay their fair share (while writing the tax laws that create the loopholes available only to the rich?)

Does anyone else see the resemblance between the Pope and Warren Buffett? Those two have a LOT in common.

I like the gold compass the pope is holding which also indicates we are still in the age of Pisces. You know, all the fish references in the bible and the fish hat he wears.

The bible is impossible to reconcile with itself. People who read it cover to cover tend to become atheists.

I gotta tell you, that Inca religion was basically unicorn farts and willowpussies.

Pity about you going to hell though, what with the whole Keys to Heaven thing.

On NPR they quoted him as saying that rampant capitalism encourages those who prey on the weakest members of society.

I was overcome with outrage until I chose instead to be amused by the irony and hypocrisy.

Anyone who remains Catholic in light of the Catholic Church's transgressions deserves the scorn so many of us heap upon them.
