The ACC sucks this year, so they could go a while without a loss. No Lehigh on the schedule.

As much as I prefer Self to Roy now, I still think the fact that Roy has not only won championships at UNC but done it twice puts him ahead of Bill for the time being. I think that he'll get there, but today? Roy is better.

When Roy was at Kansas, he would only bring in an elite recruiting class every other year or every couple of years. I'm not sure if he did it to preserve continuity, or if he just hates the ugly elite recruiting process and only does it when he HAS to.

Self, however, seems to want to bring in as much talent as he possibly can get his hands on, and then have the players compete amongst themselves for playing time.

Roy also tends to overvalue things like, "he doesn't have cornrows or tattoos!" When history shows us that guys from the toughest backgrounds often have the toughest mindsets in-games.

Please...Roy isn't willing to hire every single Dad or the AAU coach of each 5-star recruit like Self does.

Yeah, I don't get why WRAL-Sportsfan needs a friggin' AP wire article to talk about the top 25. You've got several in-house sportswriters for both the TV and radio stations. Can Manuscalco, Gravley, or Ovies not hammer out 250 words discussing the Top 25 and what it means for the Triangle?

I always liked Roy and still do, but I'd rather have Self as a coach now. He's younger and way better at recruiting these days.

1) it should be noted that Roy won his first championship with a class he had no part of (one that completely quit on their previous coach).
2) Roy is a perfect fit for the UNC program

3) I don't think anyone but the dumbest Duke fan thinks they are the best team in the country. But with no one really dominating at all this year, its a pretty weak set of contenders I think Duke fans are feeling like it could be their year.

/as a Duke fan I feel as if the chances of them winning went up significantly since the beginning of the season. Still not convinced the team can make it past sweet sixteen though.
//and like any run in March (outside of a few teams the past decade or so), it all depends on what team you get to face each weekend in the tourny.

True, but I think his second erased any doubt that he didn't earn it. Finishing first out of 330-odd teams (or even the 68-team MM tourney) is never an easy thing to do in college basketball, and again, while I should be biased against him as a lifelong KU fan, I think he's solidly in the top five with Self, Coach K, Tom Izzo, and (ugh) Calipari. Boeheim, Pitino, Crean, Stevens, and Donovan would probably round out the top 10.

Oh, yeah, if you gave me a brand new program and said that I could have any coach in the country, Self would be the easy answer. There's pretty much no doubt in my mind that he'll finish with more wins and championships than Roy will.

This is what the people who keep trying to use the "he won with Doherty's players" completely forget. McCants and Felton were ready to bail on the program after their first year, because Doherty ran the program like a prison warden. Even Midnight Madness was a boring, prodding affair.

He caught lightning in a bottle when he recruited May, Felton, and McCants, and he didn't have a whole lot of talent to work with when he first got there because Gutheridge couldn't sell an alcoholic a bottle of scotch, much less convince kids to come to Chapel Hill. But Doherty was a tempermental asshole who was in WAY over his head, because nobody in 2001 wanted to come work under Dick Baddour. I give Dean a lot of credit for recognizing the cracks in the relationship between Roy and the new-at-the-time AD at Kansas. He did more to convince Roy to "come home" than Baddour did.

I am not taking away from roys coaching ability merely commenting on his recruiting classes and what he has accimplished there. He won that first championship with a talent haul somehow Doherty got. How did he pull that off?

I like Roy as a coach.

How did this become a Carolina thread?

Anyway, Roy Williams gets gobs of 5-star recruits year in, year out, and I believe he generally underperforms. Absolutely he has had success, but this is the guy who had Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, Jacques Vaughn, and Scott Pollard and failed to win a championship at Kansas. He will get outcoached. Last year, against Bill Self, you could see his team crumble because he's not a great game coach. He fails to recognize what is going on and make the best adjustments.

Certainly a good coach, and a fantastic recruiter. But whoever said upstream that he's a top five coach in the country? Not a chance.

hulk hogan meat shoes: The Big Ten season is going to be a bloodbath.

I dont think it is that Roy gets outcoached per se. Rather, Roy has a very specific system he coaches (the fast-break and secondary-break), and if his players arent really up to that system, well, damn the consequences. You could see that this year in UNC's losses, where they just looked sloppy and out of synch. Also, Roy's teams tend to not play great defense, so if the offense is not overwhelming, they can get beaten by anyone.

On the other hand, if you have guys like Ty Lawson and Tyler Hansbrough playing in Roy's system, the results are magnificent.

I dunno, I think they've got a legit case to be called the best. Beating a 2, a 3, and a 4 in just over two weeks is pretty impressive. That said, I haven't seen much of Arizona this year.

Why? They haven't played anybody very good yet, and they got beat by Butler. I'm not saying they aren't potentially what you think they are, but I don't think you can make the case for "best" until about 11:30pm on Feb. 2.

it is extremely impressive. I'm very glad that Mason seems to be finally dominating (but I am not sure if thats because there are no great big men this year or hes put more of his talent "together"). I guess I should clarify what I meant though. Just that there is no clear cut number 1. There is no team this year who you could say would win 6 (or more) times out of 10 against another top ranked team like in past years. It seems more like a football year, in that on "any given sunday" someone could win it.

/which is why we love March Madness
//still hoping for #5 this year
///that would put him 1 past Rupp and only behind Wooden
