So, according to your graph, autism leads organic food sales.  An increase in autism is causing people to buy organic foods.  Why is that an unusual concept?

Organic, not ORGASMIC.

I like how they point out right away that correlation does not equal causation.

Autism isn't "leading" organic food sales temporally, they're just increasing at slightly different rates. It would make more sense to suggest that artificial ingredients protect against autism.

As in, 0.^A% > 0%.

WTF?

How about 10^-6% > 0%?

it looks pretty linear -- to the point that the value of the year seems to have a correlation

It actually, more clearly, shows that people are being made increasingly aware, and thus understanding better, two very serious social issues.

They're both; buying organic food, due to better awareness and understanding of environmental issues, and getting their kids checked out due to better awareness and understanding of Mental Health issues (rather than maintaining that their kids are just 'acting up' or 'spoiled brats')

There. Graph interpreted properly.

Exactly. This is why I haven't paid for a piece of software, music, or film in two decades. It was Ninjas who gave me those vaccinations.

May I be the first one to point out that Jenny McCarthy's artificial breasts and tiny brain are the cause of autism. They must be, because before I heard of her, autism was pretty rare.

So all the seman that Jenny McCarthy sucked down over the years lead to her kids being autistic?

Small small business owner here. Specializing in high end residential home design on hurricane prone beaches. It was fun but I think it's over. I lived the dream and now I'm less than broke. We've got about $100 more or less left on our credit cards. My wife needs mental help which ourinsurance won't cover due to prior issues. I have a current job that I need to be creative and dazzling for, bit I can only work on it after the kids go to bed for a few hours but I can't find the mental mass at the end of the day. Or I can wake up after about 2 hours sleep and get started early in the morning, which is what i'm doing, in order to get anything done before the kids wake up. I used to be told I was in the right track, doing everything right. Bought a house at the right time, doing the right career, etc. I never did it for the money but it was nice to hear that it was going to be there doing what I wanted. I am ducked, I think. Bankruptcy is looking real good. My wife of its already planning her blog about life in the van down by the river. I've decided to sell my one asset, handed down by my family so that I can afford mental cadre for my wife. I already sold off my 401k. I'm farked. I know it. I made some wrong decisions. I never should have listened to all that advice about the American dream. If I were mentally unstable, I'd end up a fark headline.

Happy new year all. It's gong to get better. Its got to.

/fark off, I'm on my phone give me a break
// I'm still relatively happy

And what? My wife just woke up angry from a nap with our child who never ever sleeps. And she cannot sleep with me because I snore sometimes but when I don't snore she stays up worrying about weather or not I'm going to snore or about the money or about some other such other such such stupid thing. Mental illness sucks. It sucks to live it and to live with it. Blame me for loving my wife. I'll get all itg on you.

I would sponsor you so you could discuss this in TFD but alas, I am a charity case myself. I think the "And?" was not meant to belittle your struggle but to ask how it relates to organic food and/or autism.

As a fellow small, small business owner also going through it a bit at the moment, I wish you better things in 2013. Cheers!

It wasn't long ago historically that all food was grown organically. Was everyone autistic back then?

I place the blame of rising autism on the decline in pirates.

2013-01-02 12:34:50 AM
Seems like

a. The same parents who buy organic food are concerned enough to have their kids checked for autism spectrum disorders, leading to more diagnoses
OR
b. Parents of autistic kids are buying organic in hope of lessening the symptoms.

Population, use of tablets, consumption of energy drinks, numbers of children who think "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" is the best ever Christmas song, numbers of reality TV shows, amount of dog breeds recognized by the American kennel club, and the numbers of hairs on my back have all increased dramatically over the years. Is this correlation? Why then has there been no increase of the degree to which local TV news anchors are shiny? Should I wax or have someone shave me?

Discuss.

Hej!

My home business died when the credit crunch first hit the UK. It took the finances of all my contracts almost overnight, and turned me from homeowner to homeless in less than a year. During this time, I lost my Dad to cancer, and more friends to suicide than should have been statistically possible in one lifetime.

I've now got a new (rented) apartment, and I managed to slave my way up from dishwasher (the only job available) to chef in just 2 years, and now grow organic veg (hence my original clicking of this thread), that Is used in my restaurant. My new girl (the old one got dumped as soon as it was obvious she was a goldminer) thinks I'm "hottest thing in the kitchen"

I hope that helps to inspire.

Peace, brother!

How does 'awareness and understanding' have anything to do with the choice to buy organic food? People assume the word organic implies 'more healthy'. it does not... Its genetically modified. Its actually less 'natural' than something that grew normally.

Many of you seemed to be trained now like Pavlov's dogs to scoff at any study that correlates autism to something... Well... its caused by something. What something are you going to believe? When? I'm not saying organic food is the cause, but i'm not gonna pump my chest and declare, its not, either.

T.rex: How does 'awareness and understanding' have anything to do with the choice to buy organic food? People assume the word organic implies 'more healthy'. it does not... Its genetically modified. Its actually less 'natural' than something that grew normally.

You mean that YOU assume this. This assumption is correct when it comes to dairy, but this is missing the point entirely. Here in Sweden the term is Ecological. The term refers to the way farming is conducted, and has more to do with how healthy the environment is, than how healthy the produce will make the consumer - how well the farmer treats the land, livestock, and all the surrounding benefits to nature as benefit.

In the shortest explanation I can muster, Ecologically farmed produce generally takes more care and attention from the farmers, to ensure quality is maintained.

read more science.

From my own personal growing experience, everything I grow organically has much more flavour than the mass-farmed veg our restaurant bought in from standard suppliers, and as I'm growing it locally, the cost is next to nothing and the carbon footprint is minimal (0)

Taking ones hard earned money away from environment-destroying mega-farm-corps is ones civic duty. You probably already recycle, use energy efficient light bulbs, etc. Why the hell aren't you being environmentally responsible enough to change to ecologically sound means of food production? Oh, yeah FOXNEWSDERP told you so, That's why.

I hope I have made you more aware of why Organic produce is the way of the future. The understanding I can play no role in. That's up to you.

I think people who hand their 4 year old a large Mountain Dew and some Cheetos for lunch don't notice when Junior is licking the wallpaper and rocking back and forth anyway.
