Now imagine a future battlefield teeming with amphetamine-fueled pilots, a cyborg infantry and commanders whose brains have been shocked into achieving otherwise impossible levels of tactical cunning.

There is no "forward" in evolution. Natural selection favors adaptations that improve fit to the current environment, it doesn't look ahead.

Well until we came along anyway. We do favor traits that benefit our future. Well, short term future anyway, as we appear to be bioengineering ourselves out of a home by killing everything.

If the last two on that chart spent more cash on their NATO obligations, we could probably cut that down a bit.

Well, I already make a sulfur smell when I "bamf", so I might as well get some benefit from it.

The game you're looking to cite for this article is not Warhammer 40k. It's Ray Winninger's Underground.

upload.wikimedia.org

Brilliant, over-the-top satire that is no longer entirely "satire", focusing on superpowered (and now discharged and not only unemployed, but unemployable) war vets who got their powers through a combination of "drugs, controlled diets, gene therapy, electroshock therapy, hypnosis, and cyber-implants".

From TFA: "But the risk, ethics and policy issues arising out of these so-called "military human enhancements" - including drugs, special nutrition, electroshock, gene therapy and robotic implants and prostheses - are poorly understood"

No longer satire indeed.

2013-01-01 03:44:30 PM
There are 2,500 peer-reviewed articles showing conclusively that man-made carbon emissions are causing un-natural rapid mutations that will cause a catastrophe and end the human race. This is the worst crisis ever to face human kind. The only solution is to reduce the world's population to 10%, ban free trade and dissenting speech, confiscate privately held wealth, and install a single global government made up of the scientists who wrote the papers.

I'd actually join the military if they really could give me superpowers. They should also start developing mecha suits, because it'd be pretty awesome to see some Gundam type battles in my lifetime. Hey, war isn't going anywhere so we may as well make it entertaining.
