That's stupid. Not raising the debt ceiling is a lot like refusing to pay for the food you already ate.. except on a far larger scale. If you want to decrease spending, you do it when you write the budget, not when it's time to pay for the budget you wrote.

89 for and 8 against... Which 3 senators had better things to do?

Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Mark Kirk (R-IL), and Jim DeMint (R-SC) did not vote.

There's the first 3 who need not to be reelected. Best option would be to vote out all 100 and clean house.
It won't happen and it's our fault.

You think teabaggers understand government or economics?

If we tell them enough times, there's a tiny chance that it'll sink in. Not much of one, but non-zero chance..

Evil High Priest: Obama can't even shoot the hostage in the leg. Loser.

Actually, really, all he had to do was nothing. And nothing proved too tricky for him.

You see, unlike the Republicans (and those Libby-libs who've been saying 'Let's go off the cliff already, I can afford it, I got mine") Obama actually cares about the "poors." Like those unemployed whose money would suddenly stop coming in, for example, leaving them in Tap City. He's actually doing his job here. The Republicans could learn a lesson in that.

But politics is about winning and losing not working to do what's best for the country as a whole.

If you can figure out a way to fit the explanation into a bumper sticker, or at most, a poorly worded poster board sign, you'll have a chance.

It was an important vote so they should have been there but I'd wait first to find out if they were sick or had a family issue to deal with before getting out the rope.

It appears that Lautenberg is sick. Link

Though -2 points to New Jersey for reelecting someone who is 88 years old. That drastically increases the probability of them getting sick often or dying in office.

Sure. Let's give these criminals the benefit of the doubt. Why not?

Coming on a Bicycle: Ravijn: [i.imgur.com image 730x973]

Wow. Why do economists present the national debt as a percentage of GDP, and not of tax income? This number is WAY more frightening!

Because tax income is more closely related to deficit than debt, measuring the overall size of our economy is a more apt comparison to the entirity of our debt.

DNRTFT, but has anyone else mentioned yet that Wile E. Coyote NEVER makes it back to the cliff after going off of it, that it's always long fall & a dust cloud at the bottom of the canyon?  Because that's what I feel like we're watching here....

shiatty deal. Bonus. Accellerated depriciation will cause many companies to have low tax rates. Obama approved this but evil corporations will certainly be blamed.

ka1axy: It would perhaps improve the situation if all the elected reps who have seen this coming for over a year and have *still* not been able to do anything productive to prevent it, were placed in a large bus and driven off a real cliff.

Well, maybe that's too drastic.

Can we at least lock them all in the congress building until they demonstrate that they can play nicely together and get some work done?

Boehner asked the senate democrats to work on this back in march. Reid and obama refused. Republicans wanted this done months ago, but it was bad politically for the dems. Reid is on record saying he wont talk about the deal until after the election.

Cant wait to see the rivisionist history from the left on this one. The 2010 rivisions are hilarious in light of the well documented book by woodward.

farking hilarious. So this compromise, after Obama ran on a "balanced approach" is 41 dollars in revenue increase for every dollar in spending cuts. Now that's a truly balance approach.

When will liberals wake up and realize how much they are lied to and realize that they are totally ignorant to reality. 41 to 1 is not a balanced approach. It is the opposite of a balanced approach.

Let me ask you liberals one question. You got 80% of what you wanted. When we have another 1 Trillion dollar deficit, who do you blame then? At some point you raise taxes on everybody or you cut spending. This is reality.

Yes, because there was absolutely no ulterior motive at all to try and force Obama to act during a tough election.  If the Republicans really gave a damn, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.

Some of us prefer facts over emotions. A quick news search reveals that one was on doctor ordered bed rest, the second was out due to a stroke, and the third was indeed being a douch and decided to skip the vote because he has short timers syndrome now that he's leaving to head up the Heritage Foundation. Governing by gut and emotion is what got us into this mess in the first place, not's not perpetuate it by doing more of the same.

The federal budget is nothing like a household budget. It's something like a business budget in that:

All wealth and income for the entire country are assets.
The debt is a low-interest mortgage backed by said assets
The federal budget is spending, mainly for maintenance
You can shift more assets to cover spending, and ta-da! No deficit. Or you can finance that spending at ridiculously low rates, and borrow some more to increase business, which generates more wealth and income, lowering the deficit.

He can't even breathe without somebody shiatting himself in hatred and fear over it. Wouldn't have mattered how he handled this. The right swore to do anything to defeat their self-proclaimed nemesis, and they're damn well gonna do it, even if they have to destroy America itself in the process.

Yes, but all he (and the Dems) had to do was.. nothing. If they had simply done nothing for another few hours, they would have gotten a much better deal in three days or so. Incompetence can only go so far.

So we're going for the "incompetent" version of Obama today? When do we switch to the "insidious all-knowing corruptionist" version of Obama?
