By dicking around until the deadline passed the GOP house members can now say that they didn't raise taxes, they just allowed them to go up through inaction. That is a violation of Asimov's rules of robotics.

This reminds me of the fight my uncle John and uncle Marty got into back in 1993, after which they decided not to speak to each other for almost 3 month. I just hope that the Senate doesn't die of AIDS in a couple of years and the house doesn't decide to move to Honduras after meeting an underage male prostitute named Jesus.

Sigh.

On the one hand, raising taxes and cutting spending during a recession is stupid. We need taxes (ALL OF THEM, regardless of income, though lower income is more effective) as low as possible and spending as high as possible to help the economy rebound.

On the other hand, everyone here except for the right wing idiots knows that this is the only real chance we have to cut spending and raise taxes. If we leave it for later, when the economy is stronger, the GOP will simply refuse. Right now the GOP is in disarray and the tax increases and spending cuts can't be trapped in committee or filibustered. If this opportunity is missed, we won't see another chance like it for probably decades.

On the gripping hand, Obama and the Democrats don't seem to actually want to use this priceless opportunity. Instead, they're compromising again and again with the GOP, and putting forth weak, spineless plans, as usual. Not that this is unexpected. In all my adult years, I think I've yet to see a political opportunity the Democrats DIDN'T waste.

Whether it happens now, or in a few days/weeks, prepare for yet another milquetoast, middle of the road bill that doesn't really fix anything, but just pushes the problems down the road until next time.

Boehner should tell Obama there will be no deal unless the tax increases on the rich are taken off the table. Why should we be raising taxes on the rich and let those who are not rich a free pass?

Why are you so concerned about the rich? They wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.

The thing is the rich have earned it. They create things and make money off of what they have created. The government feels that the rich should pay more what they have earned from their creations and give that money towards people who are lazy and don't create things. I wouldn't give money to those who are poor and lazy. They're leeches.

Counterpoint: The rich required the benefits of this society to become rich. Their businesses are built on it and the laws of this society are what stop roving groups of heavily armed people from taking their riches.

In other words: "Gimme!!!"

You have to be put upon because they are inept, failing buffoons. And, that's not fair to you. Not fair to me.

TheAbstractor: Tax a millionaire $50,000 and $50,000 disappears from someone who knows how to make millions of dollars and goes to a bunch of bureaucrats and politicians who only know how to buy votes, protect their turf and waste money in ways that would boggle the mind of most honest people.  That money's gone, and if it creates a job or otherwise sustains or nourishes a human being, it will be completely by accident.

If you let the rich keep their money, they will use that money to make more money.

That assumes that the rich are making more money. What is happening is the reserve bank is making more money so everyone's cash is now worth less.  The very rich are using ways to turn that new manufactured money into their personal wealth and there is some trickle down to other rich people from that but nearly everyone else ends up in worse shape.

MFAWG: Ambivalence: Oh well, they did absolutely everything they could to avoid this. Everything except, you know, working and compromising and putting the interests of the country before their own ideology.

They sure did talk a lot though. And they blamed everyone but themselves. And they sighed and wailed and gashed their teeth. I don't know what more we could have asked of them.

They could have torn their clothing from their bodies while wailing 'The end is nigh, the black man got a second term'.

Because that's really what wrenched up the works: the Tea Party and a large portion of the GOP had absolutely NO farkING PLAN in place for Obama's reelection.

These are stupid, stupid people we're dealing with here, and the sooner we stop taking them seriously the better off we're going to be.

Hell, they had no plan for what they'd do if THEY won the election. They were just going to figure it out later, or something.

You'd think that if the Koch's wanted to buy a government they'd at least get one that wasn't inept.

2013-01-01 09:54:32 AM
It all starts again in two months? Screw that, go over the cliff, wait a week and submit a bill encompassing Obama's original plan. Make sure the military bases down South start to close and put the fear of God into those arrogant schmucks. The repubs are going to shut down the government every two months for the next four years unless we do something about it now.

With a little bit of luck the sight of people starving and rioting in Brownbeck's Kansas should put an end to this ridiculousness once and for all. Taxes are the price we pay for civilization. Don't pay your taxes, go to farking jail.

Better off going over the cliff.

We have to pay for George W Bush's reckless fiscal policy, tax cuts, Medicare part D, and unpaid for wars somehow. All of that wasn't free, in case you didn't know. Or did you believe Bush when he said trickle down voodoo economics would somehow magically pay for it all?

And on top of that, Obama's previous offer was a 1:10 ratio of tax increases to spending cuts. The GOP rejected that offer out of hand, and are now forced to either accept a deal with a 413:10 ratio or reject it and end up getting involuntarily saddled with a deal that has a higher ratio.

A lot of people aren't naturally self-centered, paranoid narcissists who love money above all else, so it's a little harder to get them fired up about perceived injustice. I guess you don't have that problem.

I live with my mom. The Tea Party is ruining this country. Or, I should say, the Koch brothers are ruining this country, while hiding behind a bunch of white evangelical rubes.

Obama is ruining this country. Haven't you seen all the warning signs? Obama was born on the Kingdom of Hawaii. The Kingdom of Hawaii was ruled by a Monarchy/Dictator. This tax increase on the rich is leading us towards the road to dictatorship under Obama and towards a unprecedented third term.

When you have companies such as Hobby Lobby or other small businesses employing over 50 workers resisting certain parts of the healthcare law over religious freedom, something is wrong in this country.

That's what I love about New Vegas (and Skyrim and other Bethesda games), the different factions that aren't simply "the good guys" and "the bad guys."  All of the major factions can make some claim that they stand for peace and prosperity, or the rule of law, or freedom, or some other respectable goal.  Even the Legion, for all the misogyny and cruelty, can make the claim that life would be better under their rule (at least for male non-slaves) than the current situation.

When I play those games I really agonize over which faction to support, if any.  In other computer role-playing games, about the only choice is to be good or to be evil.
