I said it when this session of Congress started with group reading - They would be improving immensely if they only promised to read the Constitution over and over.

I would recommend the bootstrappy "Makers VS. Takers" Conservatives stop reading "Atlas Shrugged" and switch to a detailed History Of The French Revolution, because it's a far more accurate historical precedent to what is about to happen unless shiat changes than anything Ayn Rand puked forth.

The similarities are striking.

I knew as soon as Obama was elected that Republicans would be able to smoke-screen their racism by claiming that any critique of him would be interpreted as racism and that was "playing the race card". So, they are free to hate his black ass with virtual impunity. As an extra added bonus, they'd be free to label the failure of the two or three black Republicans as racism, too (Never mind the fact that they're frickin' insane). That's why they clung so hard to Allen West and Herman Cain.

A great idea is to force all incoming legislators to put all of their worth into government bonds, only able to remove a percentage over a time period based on their term in government.
A single-term senator is only allowed 100% of his money out of government bonds after 6 years. A two term senator? 12 years. And so on.

An excellent idea.

Sadly, it will never be implemented, as the only way a law curtailing lawmakers' pay will ever get passed is if it gets approved by those very lawmakers. I highly doubt our nation's Representatives and Senators would be in any particular hurry to vote their own salaries down from "upper middle class, before you factor in perks like having your own staff and private jet that doesn't cost you one red cent" to "working stiff who makes just barely enough to not die of starvation, exposure to the elements or easily preventable and easily treatable diseases; and lives paycheck-to-paycheck, picking and choosing which bills to pay based on which bill's late fee is most or least affordable once the costs of rent, food and fuel are factored in."

Shades: highrye: Shades: Xetal: Shades: Xetal: Shades: Yes, let's keep pretending that we don't know that even if we taxed the top 1% (or it it the 2% these days? So hard to keep up) the entirety of their income- a 100% tax rate- it would only pay for about a week and change of the federal government (nevermind state taxes). Let's pretend that we aren't borrowing trillions a year and that most of it goes to entitlements. Let's pretend that Europe hasn't been doing this longer than we have, and aren't all going down the fiscal toilet. Let's pretend that we can just give everything to everyone, and things will work out.

Or, you know, we could be adults and limit the budget to what we actually take in. Just a thought.

You know how I know that you're bad at math?

Because you don't know how to read CBO reports? It's OK kid, the world needs ditch diggers too.

That's right, I'm a ditch digger because you think that every European country is failing and that the top 1-2% don't make much money.

Sorry that you suck at math and basic higher level thinking... but it really isn't my fault that you're a moron. Oh well, I'll put you in "retarded ideologue" gray with all the others.

Yes Greece, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, soon France, and then Germany, and then the rest of Europe are doing just swell. Proud to be on your little "list", leech.

If you took 100 percent of the top one percent's income it would cover the Federal budget for about 60 percent of the year.

Actually, it'd cover about one third of the deficit, which translates to a little over 20% of the budget. And it would cut states off entirely, and it would also end with nobody would bother to be in the top 1% anymore of even close. If we raised taxes strenuously, we would realistically get about 5% of the budget, at the most (or ~11% of the deficit). That leaves the overwhelming majority of the deficit to either be paid for in spending cuts or we just keep borrowing money until people don't want to lend us money anymore (Greece). We cannot tax our way out of this mess. We have to raise the Social Security age and drastically slash benefits. It needs to no longer be economically-viable to be on the dole. It will be that way anyway, the only options are we can do it now, when there's time to cushion the blow, or we can do it later, when reality takes a brick to our collective faces (Greece again).

To no longer be economically viable to be on the dole, we need living wages for everyone.

Otherwise, by definition, they will be on the dole. There is no solution to food stamps and federally subsidized food pantries that to not involve living wages for everyone. Most peoploe who utilize federal aid in some way work at least one job and yet require federal aid to survive.

That is the economic reality that no conservative wants to face. The problem begins and ends with a private sector that wants to turn everyone into wards of the state as a matter of policy.

n the House, GOP sources said earlier Monday that there's little practical difference in settling the issue Monday night versus Tuesday. But if tax-averse House Republicans approve the bill on Tuesday -- when taxes have technically gone up -- they can argue they've voted for a tax cut to bring rates back down, even after just a few hours, GOP sources said. That could bring some more Republicans on board, one source said.

Step 1: Stall a vote in the House until after the new year.
Step 2: Watch taxes go up.
Step 3: Vote for the new tax cuts
Step 4: Claim you lowered taxes
Step 5: Profit.

/And by "profit" I mean "Get reamed by smart Democrats who will pin the entire debacle on Republicans, including "ZOMG BY THEIR INACTION THEY RAISED YOUR TAXES HURR"

So if they spend half their life in public service, they lose everything... surely this plan can't go wrong.

I don't have a good  answer for how to fix it, but I think the bigger problem is the ability for them to actively take money from people for whom their legislation has great effect.

2013-01-01 12:44:16 AM

TheAbstractor: Tax a millionaire $50,000 and $50,000 disappears from someone who knows how to make millions of dollars and goes to a bunch of bureaucrats and politicians who only know how to buy votes, protect their turf and waste money in ways that would boggle the mind of most honest people.  That money's gone, and if it creates a job or otherwise sustains or nourishes a human being, it will be completely by accident.

If you let the rich keep their money, they will use that money to make more money. If you give that money to poor people, they will use that money to make more poor people.

And that's just the pragmatic argument.  We're not even getting into the moral problem of any group of people taking $50,000 from anyone just because they think they will spend it more intelligently and morally than the  victim taxpayer.

Wrong on all counts. Wow.
