Newton, CT officials: "Please stop sending us stuff"

Makes sense.  It's probably earmarked for Newtown, instead.

Somebody send subby a w

2012-12-31 05:31:03 PM
I have been sending them vials of my semen so that they can make replacement children.  That's still OK, right?  Otherwise I gotta start sending it to Brooklyn Decker again

OtherLittleGuy: So much this. The money on teddy bears alone could probably finance new books and related supplies for Sandy Hook Elementary for the next year.

The median income in Newtown is over $100,000 per year. I'm sure they can afford their own textbooks.

I don't understand the point of sending donations to begin with.

2012-12-31 08:54:18 PM
I sent them some nice coffee mugs. You know, cuz everyone should have nice coffee mugs.

Yeah, not be insensitive, but this wasn't a natural disaster. The only things they are missing cannot be replaced.

Other than the national equivalent of sending over a hot dish, there is not much we can offer.

This is my line of thinking as well. The cards and well wishes in the first couple of days are ok but the tons of toys and other temporary feel good items could be better spent on people who actually need the stuff.

This happens after every tragedy. We send a bunch of stuff because he don't know how else to help. These incidents tend to happen for a reason but it's usually a reason that is difficult to deal with so it's much easier to throw some money or a bunch of flowers and feel good having "done something" instead of actually doing the hard work of determining the factors that lead to the tragedy and making them less likely to cause trouble in the future.

Even in natural disasters, which for the most part can't be prevented, we have a hard time making changes that would reduce the impact in the future. It's easier to take some old pants that have been in the to-be-donated pile next to the door for a year, and drop them off at the local radio station's Crazy Joe and the Morning Mayhem Team "show them we care" donation drive than to ask why so many houses we built in a twenty year floodplain. Or in this case, deal with all the factors that cause this country to have mass shootings of the kind that are more common in Pakistan than in developed nations.

Pfft!: Good to see everyone coming together tho, tbh. Restores my faith in humanity.

Why? Because people feel guilty? They aren't doing it out of altruism. They have been emotionally manipulated into donating because it makes the feel like they've done something meaningful. Really they've just wasted their money.

The gunshots probably did some damage to the school, but I'm sure there's a perfectly fine Home Depot or Lowe's nearby with plenty of supplies for that.

Pretty sure there are still people displaced by Hurricane Sandy could use your money if you're feeling generous.

Hell, there are people from Katrina still trying to get their damn lives together.

And if none of them want it, Haiti is still a shiathole.

This.

Donate something to Haiti or your local battered women's shelter and label it in memory of those victims. Don't send useless sh*t to people who don't need it so you can feel like you touched a national tragedy.

People want to feel attached to a situation like this, so they involve themselves by sending useless crap.

You what they can use? Teddy Bears. To put on the ground. That always helps.

They said the town has only 60,000 Teddy Bears.

You joke but I remember after 9/11, there was a story just like this that included a bit about a girl who made a ball out of 3,000 band-aids and sent it to "The People of New York". Hopefully, the people of Newtown will be able to regift things to those who were hit by Hurricane Sandy, who may actually need to replace the teddy bears that were washed out to sea.

2012-12-31 09:37:45 PM
Reminds me of The Onion story following 9-11: "Not knowing what else to do, woman bakes cake with American flag design."

Next we'll be reading about a floating teddy bear island in the South Pacific.

Can't everyone just pray for Newton/Newtown? It's about as useful, it assuages the guilt just like sending a stuffed animal, and you don't have to pay FedEx to send it.

2012-12-31 10:02:49 PM
should be obvious tag

Haha, I work at a police dispatch center and we just put cards in the mail for them. No extra crap though. I think we sent flowers to Aurora though...

I sent them some soup in an envelope - didn't hear back from them so screw 'em.

How many cute kids are dead in Haiti?

2012-12-31 10:16:19 PM
I often wonder how many of these people who ship out packages of whatever to residents of towns like this after a tragedy also distribute packages locally?

You obviously haven't read the Book of Job, or BSABSVR's post.

I just dropped off a couple hundred handprints from my kid's school today since I was visiting in the area.

They were very gracious and appreciative. And they're ready to move forward and get the temporary school opened for the kids on Wednesday.

/God bless them all. I can only imagine

A) I agree

B) I helped coordinate a stuffed animal donation (years ago) for the Detroit police. We bagged donated (but new) stuffed animals and cops kept a few in their trunk. So when they responded to a crime scene with kids present they could give them a bit of comfort.

The Newtown stuff I imagine is people feeling helpless and wanting to do *something*.... maybe it could turn into something to actually help traumatized kids, though.

(I realize you said tainted but if people are sending random stuffed animals as opposed to leaving them at the site I would *hope* they were new...

FTFA: Adam Lanza, 20, took guns belonging to his mother, Nancy Lanza, and shot her as she slept in her bed. Then he went to Sandy Hook Elementary, where he gunned down 20 children and six staff members before killing himself.

Just in case you didn't know why people are sending gifts.

2012-12-31 10:43:34 PM
I sent actual stuffed animals.

If they can't appreciate the way the taxidermist posed my old dog, Mr. Fetches -- or even bother to mount the 12-point buck I shot in Arkansas last year above the principal's office door, I'm checking out. Did all I could do. Only time will heal.

2012-12-31 10:43:38 PM
I'm sure all they really want are those bulletproof backpacks.
