Triger?

Please.

How about detention for poor grammar.

And for wearing toilet seats from her ears.

I'm surprised by the contrast between the childishness of her writing and spelling and her obvious intelligence. The poem is daring and thoughtful. Well done, Courtni. Shame someone had to press the Independent Thought Alarm.

Attempting to understand the motive(s) of the perpetrator(s) would seem to be a key component if we hope to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies, yet it seems that in some cases, such reasoning is considered taboo - even sacrilege.

Such is the case for the Holocaust, 9-11, and apparently, Sandy Hook.

We are not to question "why", but are expected to simply accept that evil is evil for evil's sake.

Irrational, unscientific and most counterproductive.

Dogberry: imagine the outcry if nothing had been done and something bad occurred.  I'm okay with over caution that results in a minimal suspension and a follow-up investigation.

Exactly. Just like when you tell an off-color joke at the office and get sent to jail for a few days until we've done an investigation. No harm no foul.

Or are we only allowed to apply this standard of caution you propose to certain groups of people?

It looks like your run-of-the-mill poem by a high school kid with a persecution complex. "I run but they still attack. My innocence I won't get back. I use (sic.) to smile. They mistook my kindness for weakness." I can laugh now, but I probably wrote embarrassing shiat like that in high school English class, minus the obvious spelling and grammar deficiencies.

The first person to use the term 'Sandy Hook denier' gets cock punched. You've been warned.

Poor kid. It's heart breaking when a young person learns just how stupid the folks 'in charge' are.

You're from SF. Ever hear of Dan White? His wife was a teacher at T.I. Elementary. This school is new for me to hear about, and I've been a substitute at SFUSD since the 1900s.

That was better than most teenage poetry I've read.

Note that that was a "relative" statement.

2012-12-31 08:18:05 PM
Oh, who gives a flying tit?

When I was a teenager, I routinely wrote dark and depressing wharrgarble in notebooks because the guidance counselor was nicer than my math teacher and better at explaining trigonometry. It became something of a game, to see how florid I could get the imagery, and I was by no means the only one who did it. My creative-writing teacher once laughed so hard over a fellow student's poem entitled 'Vampers of my Sole' that she broke a blood vessel and had to be hospitalized. It was about the 'author's boyfriend dumping her before prom in favor of another girl with a bigger rack and she'd really read more Anne Rice than anyone should've. (I was a teenager well before 'Twilight' and have only pity for high-school writing teachers since its' advent.)

The 'notebook-wharrgarble stage' is an accepted part of the teenage-girl metamorphosis and it is no more rare, special or remarkable than caterpillars building cocoons or tadpoles sprouting legs. In order to turn a child brain into an adult one, there's bound to be somewhat of a gooey phase. Teenage boys use socks, teenage girls use notebooks. It is quite similar. At least she wasn't clogging up the Internet with it.

serpent_sky: dopekitty74: Teenagers write all sorts of lame things, draw all sorts of dark or suggestive drawings, and just generally are trying to express how they feel through artistic hobbies. Now we're going to take that away from them too?

I'm not an expert, but I'd think that taking away outlets - every dark thought is punishable, every "scary" drawing is wrong, as well as having less exercise and places for youthful energy may, just may, be why so many of these kids crack.

I remember when I was in 2nd grade or so, I drew the school with bombs placed all over to blow it up, with paths to rescue the few people I liked and get the classroom gerbils out.  My mom found it and asked me why, and I told her my friend and I did that earlier because some people were mean and we wanted to get them back. Something to that effect. I don't even remember what, if anything, happened, probably because I was eight years old and expressing being angry and upset in a child-like way.

And I'm starting to see the merits of not making these shooters into national names and telling the story over and over.  It's not as if we have any great insight on what makes these people snap (the guy from Colorado is actually alive and they seem to have nothing) but when it is in the public consciousness to such an extent, it will make its way into things like poems and the like.

too many people can't see how much impact TV, film & news has on the public psyche. after truman capote's 'in cold blood' went from book to cinema the crazy started to spiral. there are many people on the edge, just waiting for someone to light their match. within weeks of the couple speaking publicly about being taken and probed by aliens dozen or more other folks claimed pretty much the same.

people are easily led - not all, but many. denis leary made excellent examples of how important it is to have old school fun but not idiot proof toys on the market in his christmas special. culling the herd and weeding out the truly stupid is best for all, and it should be encouraged. the more the coddling continues the more morans we will have all around us. no thanks.

suspension for doing what?

I'd imagine that the school staff is far more likely to be able to accurately assess this young lady's likelihood to cause mischief than you or I, and I feel confident assuming that there is much more to the story than is being reported.  As I see it, Courtni created what a responsible party thought was a potentially dangerous situation.  If the situation couldn't be reckoned with in a brief meeting as soon as the issue arose, then it's entirely appropriate to remove the student until any fears are either put to rest or substantiated.  Seems pretty straightforward to me.

I hope those responsible parties never get hold of the stuff I write and make any assessments about my likelihood to cause "mischief." Based on what you seem to think appropriate, I'd be spending the next six months in Atascadero under heavy sedation.

Also, I find it interesting that the generation who grew up railing against big brother has now become the generation of 'sit down, shut up, and don't question government intrusion into your private life'.

San Fran has gone from the Mecca of rebellion and counter-culture to the poster child for intrusive government involvement in the personal lives of it's citizens. The citadel of authoritarian asshats.

Not so much a left or right thing. Its simply the result of shirking old values like taking responsibility for ones actions and standing up to defend your own community.
Ultimately they need someone to take care of them and the government steps in to be the authoritative, generous, and protective parent.

They'll abide by the authoritarianism until it tells them to straighten up their act and get a haircut.

You don't get it do you?

It's all about doing whatever you want that doesn't hurt others.

If it hurts anything, the hippies don't want you having it. Food, animals, the environment. etc.
