Popcorn Johnny: John Buck 41: My avoidance will continue.

So you're purposely avoiding watching a video that has 1.1 billion views?  LOL

Yep. Never saw ET,and a host of other blockbusters, too. Havn't sat through all of Gone With The Wind, either. What makes you think I would possibly give a shiat about some stupid 3 minute pop/rap/hiphop music video?

But I'm glad I could make you LOL. Happy New Year.

Nobody said you need to give a shiat, it's just hilarious that you're trying to impress us over avoiding a 3 minute video that half the damn planet has seen.

My girlfriend is Korean. I think if I say that to her one more time she's going to kill me.

/It's her fault. She's the one who showed me the video in the first place

GungFu: I see no 'joke', as you intrepret it.

It's a joke song making fun of the Asian equivalent of Beverly hills. That's the whole point, and why it's entertaining as much as anything else.

2012-12-31 07:08:37 PM
That song would have been easy to hate if it wasn't for the video.

The video was just too fun and funny not to enjoy.

And now the damn song is stuck in my head. Again.

2012-12-31 07:09:12 PM
BBC Radio 1 decided to make the song the first thing played at the stroke of midnight, so good luck with that...

2012-12-31 07:21:24 PM

don't understand: Yeah, I'm gonna call bullsh*t on this. I work for an ad agency and we've got ads coming out in the next few weeks featuring this clown and that insipid "song."

whoever greenlighted that is part of the problem.

I'm not trying to impress anyone. Guess I succeeded (unintentionally, I might add) impressing you, though. I already wished you a Happy New Year once. Ready to let this go?

I am sitting in Inchon airport right now and psy's next single has been out for a while here and in constant rotation on MTV, yes MTV Asia still plays music

2012-12-31 07:51:48 PM

Marisyana: I like "Gangnam Style."

Yep, I do.

It's catchy.  Doesn't matter that I don't understand any of the lyrics.  I like Rammstein too but damn if I speak any German.

Good workout song.

It's only pop, it won't hurt you.

/heeyyyyyy, sexay laday

I laugh at the parody videos as well. The one on "Mitt Romney style" was hilarious, and the "NASA Johnson style" video was both funny and had some hot geeky women in it too!

Not until you take 3 minutes out of your life (that'll leave you 23 minutes to get to the gym) and watch the damn video.

Because you're repeatedly posting in a thread about it.

It's a good song. Even without knowing a word of Korean or anything to do with the history of the song, I knew it was social parody/commentary, which it is.

/he's a Berklee grad, which is cool
//Heeeeeey, sexy ladee!

I like the song and the video. So there!

LasersHurt: Somewhat classy move, trying to put it out to pasture. Fresh beginnings and all.

^ Bingo! Good on him. And he'll still be getting laid for years on recognition so it's win-win.

Know what? I tried to offer up a truce to you. F**k it. I take back the Happy New Year to you. Plus your Fark handle looks awfully familiar from recent gun control threads, so I know you aren't rational.

I still like the song, and I think Psy is handling it very graciously. Especially since by all accounts he finds it somewhat galling since the song itself was about/a satire of people caught up in the glitz and over-hype of the supposed Gangam lifestyle, a sort of Worst Korea Beverly Hills empty money and glamour kind of thing. Imagine a rapper doing a song making fun of suburban gansta kids only to have it embraced by a wide-market who then go on to use it to advertise all the accoutrements and bling of the suburban gangsta lifestyle, plus metamucil and Allstate insurance.

12349876: relaxitsjustme: Where do you Farkers hang out that you can't avoid Gangnam style or why are hanging out in places that don't play music you enjoy?
Sporting events.

I had to go look it up on youtube to hear the whole thing even once. It was amusing. I'll watch it tonight.

Seriously? What's so appealing about her? My dental hygienists and maids are much much hotter than her!

/Then again, I'm Asian, and I'm female, so my perception might be skewed.

So's my wife, and she'd happily shove a ball gag in that screeching banshee's mouth before doing unspeakably sexy things to her.  She's fit, female and symmetrical with soft features - kinda easy to see the appeal.

I think he's doing a good job of taking the whole thing in stride.

With that said I think he should view it like a cash register and get as much out of it as he can. Were Americans. Were fickle. We have the retention of a tsetse fly after a double espresso. Take the money, man, and run.

I prefer this version.

More Hyun-a, less horse-dancing. (turn the sound off, if you must)

When you mesh your massive one giant North American crossover hit with 2 Legit to Quit...... You either have a damn good sense of humor about yourself and your luck or the amount of fail that is about to slap you in the face is going to make Hammer's story look like a fairy tale.

2013-01-01 01:16:55 AM
I know Psy had a long career before too. I've seen him on a KPop showcase on Korean Air before he blew up in the states, but seriously 2 Legit to Quit.

relaxitsjustme: Where do you Farkers hang out that you can't avoid Gangnam style or why are hanging out in places that don't play music you enjoy?  The only time I've heard the song played is when I've checked it out on youtube.  I enjoyed it, kind of catchy w/ cute babes but I'm not running out to buy it.  Subby probably enjoyed it the first time too but once it got HUGELY popular you're just too cool to be associated with something sooooo mainstream.

I heard it at my grandmother's nursing home on Christmas day. The dining room staff were playing it from back in the kitchen. I couldn't believe it. It was fairly loud too.

roughridersfan: "Being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is already special - it's the biggest stage in the universe - plus it's my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of 'Gangnam Style,'" said Psy.

Also:

"I'm not saying ['Gangnam'] is ending on Dick Clark - I still have a lot of invitations to perform it . . . I'll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I've still got to do promo. "

I think all he's saying is that it's time he came out with another hit. That's it.

This is easily the most ridiculous comment I've seen all week, so naturally it's the one that made me snort with laughter so loudly and suddenly that my dog nearly levitated off the sofa.

Spaceman Spiffed: Gosling: Well, think of it from the singer's perspective. You've got other material, you would like to make more material, and you don't exactly want to end up a one-hit wonder. That's like going 'Yeah, I want to get up to the major leagues, and I'll be happy just playing one game.' You want to have a second hit too, and a third and a fourth and so on. And you might not think that song is your best song anyways. So you go make more songs, songs you think are better than the hit, but all people want to hear is the one hit no matter how much other material you put out, and sooner or later you think of your hit not as your meal ticket, but as your albatross. Nobody's letting you do anything BUT your one hit. Often, it ends up pissing you off. You're a musician, a creative type, you want to grow as a musician and people want to keep you in a tiny little box.

Sometimes it gets to the point where the artist just straight-out refuses to perform the song anymore.

Yup.. It happens to a lot of bands/performers, even when they have a body of other works that charted/got airplay.

I had a chance sit down with Mike Score, frontman for a Flock of Seagulls, a few years ago before a show. He said he was *sick* of 'I Ran' but he knew that's what people came out to hear (and paid the bills) so he was playing it *twice* in his shows (different arrangements I think), once at the start, and again for the encore. What seemed to really bother him was that one song was all people remembered or cared about hearing, when the band had several other hits in their discography - 'Wishing' (Biggest hit for them in the UK), 'DNA' (won a Grammy award), 'Space Age Love Song', 'Nightmares', 'The More You Live', and some other songs that got minor airplay.

I'm thinking about Homer shouting at BTO not only to play taking care of business but to get right to the chorus
