Meh. It's some catchy shiat. Now that I've actually heard of Psy, I'm gonna go out of my way to check out his next single/album.

2012-12-31 04:00:21 PM
Good luck to you, Psy, but other bands have tried that and failed.

2012-12-31 04:00:41 PM
I was wondering how long it would take for the guy to finally snap and say, "F*ck all of you - one more person asks me  to play that song I'm throat punching them."

Stairway to Heaven is great and all but I wouldn't want to ask Jimmy Page to play it again to his face.

Kinda good he is ending while it is still somewhat popular. But still shoulda milked it for all it was worth first.

2012-12-31 04:03:42 PM
No, wait, actually, this one fits better. The other one was out-of-place songs being the one to hit it big. This one is about bands coming to not want to do a song of theirs anymore, which is what this is.

2012-12-31 04:03:49 PM
Good for him.

I'm always amused at these 1 hit internet wonders who think they became popular because people like the song.  It was a joke!  That's why everyone watched/shared it, not because it was a good song.  Milk it and move on.

Well, think of it from the singer's perspective. You've got other material, you would like to make more material, and you don't exactly want to end up a one-hit wonder. That's like going 'Yeah, I want to get up to the major leagues, and I'll be happy just playing one game.' You want to have a second hit too, and a third and a fourth and so on. And you might not think that song is your best song anyways. So you go make more songs, songs you think are better than the hit, but all people want to hear is the one hit no matter how much other material you put out, and sooner or later you think of your hit not as your meal ticket, but as your albatross. Nobody's letting you do anything BUT your one hit. Often, it ends up pissing you off. You're a musician, a creative type, you want to grow as a musician and people want to keep you in a tiny little box.

Sometimes it gets to the point where the artist just straight-out refuses to perform the song anymore.

2012-12-31 04:17:55 PM

It's a fun video and song, and that's why it's so infectiously popular. People liked the song for that. I see no 'joke', as you intrepret it.

By the way, it's only a one-hit wonder to most of us. He's been successful in S. Korea for years. Pretty hard to be really negative about the guy and his song, unless one's a grumpy coont.

/And i have found over the years that the general public picks for "best songs" are usually vomit inducing autotune or craptastic rap, or even worse, technofunk remixes. Or we don't give a fark because it was a cover of a pretty well known korean song that was penned in response to a U.S. tank rolling over two fourteen year old girls. Would think dealing with a little hyperbole should be the least of the backlash over that incident.

"Being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is already special - it's the biggest stage in the universe - plus it's my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of 'Gangnam Style,'" said Psy.

Yup.. It happens to a lot of bands/performers, even when they have a body of other works that charted/got airplay.

I had a chance sit down with Mike Score, frontman for a Flock of Seagulls, a few years ago before a show. He said he was *sick* of 'I Ran' but he knew that's what people came out to hear (and paid the bills) so he was playing it *twice* in his shows (different arrangements I think), once at the start, and again for the encore. What seemed to really bother him was that one song was all people remembered or cared about hearing, when the band had several other hits in their discography - 'Wishing' (Biggest hit for them in the UK), 'DNA' (won a Grammy award), 'Space Age Love Song', 'Nightmares', 'The More You Live', and some other songs that got minor airplay.

I still like the song, and I think Psy is handling it very graciously. Especially since by all accounts he finds it somewhat galling since the song itself was about/a satire of people caught up in the glitz and over-hype of the supposed Gangam lifestyle, a sort of Worst Korea Beverly Hills empty money and glamour kind of thing. Imagine a rapper doing a song making fun of suburban gansta kids only to have it embraced by a wide-market who then go on to use it to advertise all the accoutrements and bling of the suburban gangsta lifestyle, plus metamucil and Allstate insurance.

Haliburton Cummings: eikni: I know Psy had a long career before too. I've seen him on a KPop showcase on Korean Air before he blew up in the states, but seriously 2 Legit to Quit.

he blew up a Korean Airliner?

This is easily the most ridiculous comment I've seen all week, so naturally it's the one that made me snort with laughter so loudly and suddenly that my dog nearly levitated off the sofa.

Spaceman Spiffed: Gosling: Well, think of it from the singer's perspective.

I'm thinking about Homer shouting at BTO not only to play taking care of business but to get right to the chorus
