Pffft. I read at least 4 Scooby Doo phonics books before bed every night. I assure you, there is no connection between this and my 4 year old starting every word with the letter R.

I understand resolutions to do things you feel you would benefit from, but don't actually enjoy (like eating better, working out, giving up an addiction)....

But I don't get the point of this. If you ENJOY reading; then just read. Who cares about keeping score?

Are you farking kidding me? Reading six comic books doesn't count, you giant douche. Maybe if you read a big-ass 50-issue compendium, but anything that your average middle-schooler can read in a half-hour isn't a "book" just because it costs $20.

I haven't tried one as of yet, but that's a possibility in the future. As of now when I place a hold at our library I opt for the large print version since they're really good about offering both versions. Older books, not so much, but for at least the last 7-8 years most of the newer books the library has are in regular & large print. They even have a special section where the large print books are shelved for easier access.

It's also possible to borrow e-books from Libraries. I don't know if you can do that on a Kindle, with a Nook you definitely can. Of course, your library may not have e-books (no idea how widespread they are now), and not all books are digitized, but it's worth looking into for additional reading material.

Huh, just remembered one time I read a book while I was standing in a book store. Probably took about an hour...heh, good times.

I once read The Great Gatsby while my friend was in the shower. He took long showers. But killing 7 comic books in a night and reading nothing else for 6 days is not reading 7 books in a week.

Seeing that I have the entire Discworld novel series sitting here unread, that might be a good idea. Then again, it takes more than a day to finsh one with work and sleep and whatnot. Also, over 50 unplayed PS3 games, so that might put a dent into reading time.

I can't read fiction. I'm too easily distracted. I'll be reading the words on the page, but thinking of something else entirely. 50 pages later, I'll realize that I cannot remember a word of it.

I can read technical books, since that kind of material really requires your concentration to try to understand.

I've read plenty of books. My resolution is to talk to a stranger a day (and not get shot or pepper-sprayed).

Pretty much this. You'll get a lot of quantity, not much quality. I just finished reading Incandescence by Greg Egan, which took me over two months. Holy crap. When you're taking a break from the book to try to figure out what it's saying, and how to translate whatever into Schwarzschild coordinates, you know the author's not dumbing it down for you.

(Question for whoever read this: who exactly is the target audience? Are there hordes of science fiction fans who understand the mathematics of general relativity just lurking out there?)

Any idea can be the foster parent to others. I agree; this was largely a stunt. But he got something out of it.  And I'm inspired to consider my reading goals.

I read at least 100 books a year, probably more. In the summer I read a lot of historical romances and mystery cozies. In the winter I'm often rereading Christie, Sayers, and/or Stout. And Allingham. I also read a few new things each year, follow a few series, and even read some books people call "literature." I go through Austen and Trollope regularly, to name two, and I really dig Edwardian and Jazz Age authors.

Recently I got a used copy (always go used if I can) of 1001 Books to Read Before You Die. I've read around 130 of them. So, I will make a goal to read maybe 1 or 2 a month. I'm not interested in all of them. I've read a lot of Wodehouse but never finished all of Blandings or much of Psmith. So I might make one or both a goal. I never covered all of Dickens and there's at least one Bronte I haven't read I should get to. And Cooper. I might revisit D.H. Lawrence this year.

So, I'm inspired by the guy. If I inspire anyone here in turn, even better. If not, I can live with it. ;-)

FTA: Driving to work, I hit the final disc of a Nelson DeMille audiobook.

Having a book read to you does not constitute reading a book. He's got some catching up to do.

MorteDiem: I check out 5 or 6 e-books a week from the library. The selections are limited due to the fact that some publishers still think it detracts from sales. It's nice always having something to read though, without having to go to a bookstore or the library.

Our public library uses Overdrive Media Console and also has some titles you can read on a Kindle or Kindle app. I haven't bought a book since I started getting e-books from the library. I've also stopped borrowing regular books since I can get almost anything in e-book format. I agree, it's so nice having my books with me at all times (on my Nexus 7) and not having to go anywhere to get a book. Since I started reading on my tablet, I read 3-4 books a week.

I declare shenanigans.

Look through the list of the "books" he read. There are a lot of comic - er - "graphic novels" in there. Somehow I don't think Thor: Visionaries Volume 2 should count as reading a book.
