The anxiety about whether it is seemly to feast one's eyes on the moment of another man's death is at least as old as Saint Augustine, who recounted in the "Confessions" the futile resistance his protégé Alypius made to the attractions of gladiator contests.

What was his Fark handle?

Yes, of course it is.

People used to come from all over to watch public executions often bringing their children for a picnic.......this dark side of humanity has always been there.

Yeah it's the internet's fault.

I'm sure you can find a similar article from when camera's themselves were becoming ubiquitous.

CAMERAS - SATAN'S EYEBALLS?

Yes, of course it is.

Exactly.

When electricity appeared, I'm sure this exact same article was written then, too. And the phone, and the steam boat, and the zipper and the yadda, yadda, yadda.

Adapt or die.

I dunno. When I hear that tune, instead of Louis Jordan, I think of Tom.

There was some scaryass news story and my dad said, "Visualize this... there's a highway three hundred miles long and there's a tire burning somewhere along the highway. Guess where the media will be?"

In other words, yesterday, I was looking up recipes, visited lolcats, visited cuteoverload, checked my email to see when a party was, visited the wowhead site to look up gear for one of my characters, went shopping, and then visited a knitting website.

Granted, I did quit reddit because it was creepy and lasted 10 minutes on 4chan before realizing it was either indecipherable or insane. I like fark, because it's the Grumpy People's Meeting Room.

In reading commentary on sites, I notice people get outraged at the contents of something they just clicked a half dozen times to see. Don't click. There's all sorts of outrageous stuff going on all the time, and in a world of 5+ billion people, you'll burn out.

I suppose there is no greater weapon against the darkness than to laugh at it, but after a while it's easy to forget that's how it started. Particularly in a small community with a recognizable all-stars who you might want to impress. So go ahead, laugh at the kid who lost his hand on tour at a candy factory. Hand dipped chocolate. Ha HA!

After all, people are watching.

Just don't swear. That would be vulgar.

Eroding? No.

Evolving? Yes.

Neither good nor bad.

Hell no it's not. And now I want to watch the film again.

I think Pappy pronounces it more like "constitchency".

If humanity = patiently reading unnecessarily lengthy articles, then yes. Yes it has.

Eroding my humanity? I can't see how. Well before the internet, life had polished my humanity as smooth as a baby's skull with a bucket of jeweller's rough and an ice age to get my rub on.

I have curtailed my exposure to a lot of things on the internet. Since I'm permanently mad about everything, I don't need to wallow in a bunch of bullshiat that I already know will just piss me off more. I didn't know any of this shiat before the internet was around, why is it mandatory now? It isn't. Just let it go by. Tomorrow there will be another "crisis" or "outrage" if I want to join in.

It aint. Currently, there are for-profit web entities which help the exhibitionist morons be more visible.
More smart people, than ever before, are finding each other too.
