Interesting that Lovie is getting fired today.   I mean, had the Packers won.... does getting plowed in the playoffs by SF really save your job?

But, the poor second half tailspins and not being able to beat the Packers will do you in in Chicago.

How many teams are really looking for a QB long term right now?

KC
Jacksonville (although Henne has seemed ok)
Jets (although sounds like thye have to play Sanchez for 1 more year probably)
Arizona
Philly

Really, not that many.

QBs that look to be floating around this offseason: Flynn, Vick, Tebow.  I don't know what Cousins situation is, but I've heard people say "we should try to get him".

KC has #1 draft pick, but, this looks to be a horrible year for drafting a QB.... ESPN's first QB off the board is at 23rd (Gino Smith).   So, I think KC needs to either get Flynn or Vick.  My guess is Arizona goes after whichever one doesn't go to KC.   Tebow to Jacksonville seems destined.  Philly might roll with Foles.

I say the above, but, Smith & Barley might jump up the board just because of those teams needing QBs.... depending on if they get the FA's pre-draft.

Philly's first 4 picks better be spent on some depth at the O-line and (and a safety if they don't convert Om-Nom-Nnamdi). Otherwise Foles is going to get pounded as much as Vick did. He's a big kid and I think he has a lot of potential if he is protected.

49ers have too low of a pick, there's no way they're dropping from #1 to somewhere in the 20s.

Yep, forgot about Alex Smith....

That makes 3 QBs for the 2 main hot spots that are desperate: KC and Arizona.

I could see Smith to KC and Flynn to Arizona... people might be staying away from Vick.

If Hunt keeps Pioli around, he'll have to start interviewing hot dog vendors for that HC position. It's impossible for me to believe that Pioli will be retained, assuming that Hunt cares even a little bit about the franchise.

I think the Bears have signaled that they don't believe they can win the Superbowl with this incarnation of the team. Emery knows as well as anyone that this is an offense-driven game now, and there will have to be a rebuild process to maximize the best parts of the team. Lovie is a defense-minded coach, so this move makes sense. Doing this as quickly as possible makes sense, too.

However, I think the team is just screwed for a few years at least, as Jerry Angelo just flat-out missed on too many draft picks, year after year. Urlacher looks like he's done, Briggs, Peppers, and Tillman are getting old, and there are no up and coming players ready to take their spots.

Not even Pioli is that dumb. With rookie contracts under control, a #1 overall is more valuable than ever, even in a year when there is not a "sure thing".

Let's remember that teams always fall in love with QB's in the off season. By the time June rolls around, Geno will be a sure-fire pro-bowler who will be read to lead a team to glory.

Yes but there isn't a #1 caliber QB in this draft. So use it to reach on an unknown rookie or use it to reach on a veteran with a decent record?

There are plenty of "defensive-minded" head coaches who have had competent offenses and elite quarterback play. The Bears were just a comedy of errors. Angelo should have been gone sooner, an offense where Martz insisted that Cutler routinely take seven step drops almost got him killed in years past, and there's no bench strength for when the veterans start getting banged up in early November or so.

In the NFL, most teams have a "window". Continued success is more the exception than the norm, and if you notice, it typically occurs where you have elite quarterback play and have the ability to make good substitutions when necessary. Unfortunately, for Chicago, they really don't have either. Cutler is maybe near the top of the second tier of quarterbacks in the league, but he's not good enough to compensate for all of the mistakes the receivers make like others may be. And the "bench strength" and "conditioning" parts of the equation are pretty self-explanatory.

If true, bad call. I'd given Rivera one more year with Cam Newton just to if they could make some progress, just with a very short leash in case they start off poorly again.

After the performance by Thaddeus Lewis, I think Browns fans would be comfortable with him as the backup QB, so, yeah, Colt McCoy may be on the move, too. I'm sure the new GM could sucker someone out of a 6th round pick for him...

Geno's the number one, and unless he loses a foot between now and the draft, that probably won't change. There will be a couple other QB's who will rise enough boards to probably crack the Top 10, perhaps even the Top 5.

QB's are now the most important player on the field by a wide, wide, margin. Rookie contracts are under control, a top 5 bust no longer kills a franchise for 3-5 years. Rookie QB's are succeeding early at a rate we've never seen before.

The downsides of taking a QB early have dropped to almost nil.
