Gerrymandering has made districts of both Dems and Reps unassailable, there is little need for the to negotiate.

Being there is now 12 hours and 30 minutes until we hit the Fiscal Cliff and it has to pass the House and Senate and make it to the White House to be signed, the chances of a deal by midnight are slim to none.

Markets were down sharply on Friday after Speaker John A. Boehner's tax plan failed to reach a vote in the House on Thursday evening. No Democrats were prepared to support the bill, and Mr. Boehner told reporters that his plan also lacked sufficient votes among Republicans.

boehner can't (and hasn't ever shown an ability to) get a consensus among his own party, what is the point of negotiating with him?

2012-12-31 01:06:40 PM
To be more specific, it's Boehner's constituents' inability to grasp, among other concepts and skills most people have down pat by 4th grade, basic math.

thomps: boehner can't (and hasn't ever shown an ability to) get a consensus among his own party, what is the point of negotiating with him?

would be even more interesting if the dems refused to vote for the new "compromise" and the GOP didnt have enough votes to push the compromise through.

HELLO PORK TIME !!!

I don't mean to single you out but this part of the debate is always misportrayed. In Obama's deal, 100% of people get a tax cut. Even the top 2% get a tax cut. Even those making above $400,000, or $1,000,000 or $1,000,000,000. They all get a tax cut. They all get the same tax cuts the rest of us do. What Obama is saying is people making above $400,000 should not get an extra tax cut the rest of us do not get (because we don't make enough money to get it). The Republicans are holding up this deal because they are fighting for an additional tax cut for only the top 2%.

It's a small yet I think critical distinction. I think the public would overwhelmingly swing left if they viewed it that way. Everyone gets a tax cut, even the top 2%. It's just the top 2% don't get an extra one the rest of us don't. That's not fair.

The GOP in Congress is controlled by Boehner and McConnell. Boehner can't his people to back his own proposals, and McConnell filibusters his own bills. There is no reason to entertain any solutions that include participation by the Republican party.

I didn't portray the debate in any fashion.  I'm just saying that Obama (in theory) could instruct the IRS to withhold the same amount of taxes (same as under the Bush tax cuts) on people making less than $250K.

Not sure if that is possible, the Executive Branch can't allocate money as far as I know. House is supposed to propose spending bills. Not sure if the Executive Branch can de-allocate or not.

Up or down. It does not matter. The GOP standard "ramming it down your throat" is widely accepted as a penis reference. Anything making Boehner closer to Boner is a penis joke because Boehner is a joke.

If you can work grabbing ankles into the mix, that helps.  Republicans are always complaining about bending over for Obama.

Am I the only one rooting for the fiscal cliff?

The proposal isn't going to fix anything, and I really doubt low income people will pay "$2000" more in taxes.

Gut everything, increase taxes across the board, then pass a new tax cut on the poorest Americans next year.
