As with all good coaches. Eventually the players stop listening if the results dont happen.

He'll have to put himself in a *cough* better position.

If by Eagles fans you mean Giants, Cowboys and Redskins fans. They should be looking forward to the Eagles being irrelevant for a long time.

Andy Reid did a great job in Philly for a long, long time. It's not working for him there any more and it's definitely time for him to move on, but Eagles fans should applaud and thank him on his way out because the grass may look greener, but odds are that it'll take a few years of misery before they get back on track, even with a good coach.

It was more than that. The results didn't happen directly because Reid looked like he was operating without any definitive plan for most of the past 4-5 seasons. McNabb, now Kolb, now Vick. The revolving door at Defensive Coord. The Jim Washburn and Harry Mudd hirings. The continuing saga of the overpriced, over-hyped, under-performing free agents and trade acquisitions. The refusal to bench certain players, regardless of how bad they were playing (ie. Vick).

Will he have some measure of success elsewhere? Yes, most likely, as long as he (once again) has a QB and a staff that can compensate for his weaknesses (time mgmt, play-calling stubbornness). But there was no way he could re-establish that in Philly.

Dennis Green had 1 losing season in 10 years in Minnesota. We fired him.

Then we got Mike Tice.

Things didn't get better till Childress' 3rd year (the year before Favre).

/I will give that Tice DID win a playoff game

Been an Eagles fan forever and was actually shocked that he wasn't let go after last season. His departure has been pretty much inevitable after they wrecked themselves early on in this season so let the speculation for who'll take on the job next begin in earnest.

So is this going to be the unofficial 'heads will roll' post, not just for Reid (who was staler than week-old fish and had to go) but a bunch of other coaches today... Shurmur and Browns GM just fired by that team, Crennel out in KC. Oh the huge manatee.

Nobody feels worse about how this season went than Andy Reid. He's gotta do a better job. Make that he's gotta find a better job.

Depends on 3 things:

a) Howie Roseman actually showing something similar to competence in player evaluation. (It's hard to tell if it was more him or Reid that was calling shots the last couple of years.)
b) A coach who is willing to put up with mistakes and the learning curve of young players as the team rebuilds. (And who is a good teacher of said players.)
c) Either Foles developing into a real QB, or them drafting one early.

2012-12-31 10:20:09 AM
Let's just hope that Jeffrey Lurie's plan is "find a better coach, then fire Andy Reid" as opposed to "fire Andy Reid, then stand around with your dick in your hand".

2012-12-31 10:20:40 AM
This season ended well for Eagles fans: everyone got to watch the Cowboys lawn-dart themselves out of playoff contention. It wasn't like we were watching the meaningless thumping by the non-playoff-bound Giants on our clipped birdies.

If you can't have a good team, you can always have Schadenfreude. And I'm happy for the long-suffering Skins fans. Ain't no bandwagon-jumpers in that area (yet)!

You can't do that in the NFL. It's a violation of the league's diversity rules. You have to have an opening, advertise it, give everyone an open shot at it, have a sham interview with at least one semi-qualified African-American candidate, and THEN give the job to the guy you had in mind all along.

It doesn't matter who the Eagles have at QB until they have the slightest hint of an o-line.

Eagles have a couple of probowlers on the DL. Their line should be pretty good next year if they have a coach who runs the football and QB who doesn't dance in the pocket.

The game was still meaningful while it was being played. The Giants weren't eliminated until the Bears won (though even if the Lions won, the Vikings winning would've done it as well).

Jets fire GM Tannenbaum; Ryan keeps job
Browns in flux again as Shurmur, Heckert fired
Jags fire GM after 2-14 season
Sources: Chargers will fire Turner, GM Smith
Sources: Chiefs to fire Crennel, not GM Pioli

Not this year.  QB class is going to suck.  Geno Smith and Matt Barkley are the top-rated QBs in the draft?  LOL

Looking at the top dozen or so teams in next years draft, many of these are the teams which will have new coaches. Draft a top player, have a new system in place.

Help me out here. In a situation like Andy Reid's, where his boss is loyal almost to a fault, you don't get fired unless you grossly miss expectations. What the hell was Reid supposed to do with that team?
If anything, it would seem they did Reid a favor. He survived 14 seasons in the Notheast US sports coaching world. He's going to sort some things out and then I bet he'll sleep pretty well for the rest of the winter.

The way the Jets have drafted over the years, they'll probably take a kicker in the first round and a QB in the 6th anyway

As for Philly, they had no rings before Reid and no rings with him, so it really doesn't matter.

I don't understand firing a GM but not the coach. The coach is supposed to work for the GM, thereby ensuring that they are on the same page as to how to build the team. Bringing in a new GM with an existing coach is a recipe for failure.

I'm not exactly football savvy... is the head coach of an NFL team normally the one wholly responsible for trades, free agents, drafting and coaching hirings? Like, does he pull the final trigger on all those moves? Is that how all NFL teams operate? I know Belichick does a lot but I always figured he just had carte blanche.

Firing a GM but not a coach generally reflects ownership's satisfaction with coaching but not personnel moves.... or it's cheaper to NOT fire the coach.
