I know now is not the time to bring this up, but I cannot hold my peace - it is time to regulate the sale of buses. Or maybe raise the price of bus ammunition to $500/gallon. Whatever it takes to get these killing machines off the streets.

I drive through there often. Love old school names like "deadman's pass". And that area is indeed treacherous this time of year. Tragic. There were probably few emergency services near there as well.

If all the passengers had their own bus, they could have prevented this.

No one needs a vehicle that can hold more than 10 people. When will we wake up and stop the carnage. These high capacity busses have no legitimate purpose and must be banned!

It's a Canadian bus.

From what I read in the other news about this incident, some company run by ethnic Koreans (Mi Joo Tour) is the owner of this bus.

the problem is irresponsible naming of places along the highway. I blame the government, who should have named that stretch "safe and sound pass" or something similar, and none of this would have happened. Also, they need to move the "deer crossing" at the top of the hill to a safer location.

2012-12-31 03:30:38 AM
The bus was out of control before it ran through the rail. Shocking

2012-12-31 03:35:28 AM
"Police said the bus may have gone out of control on the highway before crashing through a guardrail and down an embankment."

Or, you know, it may have gone out of control after all of that...

it isn't the bus but the destination that is the killer. these things always happen when the bus destination is a gambling casino. don't enter said property in a vehicle that carries more then 4 people or you could be next. ban assault casinos.

I got caught in a snowstorm in Dead Man's Pass in Oregon once. Crazy thing is, due to the fickle nature of Oregon weather, if you can just drive 20 miles, you'll be down on clear, dry highway heading into the Columbia gorge. I drove it out at about 25 MPH, and I concede that it was a very dangerous roadway/ area. Probably because it was like September and most of the state was clear, none of the cars were expecting crap conditions. Eastearn Oregon is a beautiful and surreal place. It will take you from cowboy town to surface of mars within an hour. And it will remind you that life is nasty, brutish, and short.

They tried to ford the river but their wagon sank crashed through a guardrail.

Lot of the passes in Colorado have no guardrails. The snow plows snag on them, but if you ask the locals, it's to scare the Texans.

Last time I was near there in winter, I encountered a triples driver on his rookie run chaining up his trailers instead of drive wheels, wondering why he couldn't climb the hill... I spent about two hours getting him going again...

The derp starts when we hear all those laws that you grabbers want to enact that will be closely followed by all those criminals currently using guns to do harm this time!

Oh, FFS. Is someone who drives for a living really that dense? I guess if he's never driven a private vehicle in compact snow/ice, either, that might explain it, but yeesh ... that kind of ignorance is a little mind-boggling.
