Of course, since they're looking for them 90 years later, after the rule of a man who made disappearing things into an art form, it's going to be tough to find them NOW, dontcha think?

There's no mystery about the jewels. Why, they simply disappeared. Now, let's have no more curiosity about this bizarre cover-up.

Ninotchka took 'em.

Armand Hammer was a big bootlegger and associate of Murder Incorporated and Meyer Lansky. He was an MD who graduated from Columbia and under prohibition regulations as a doctor he was able to buy tincture of ginger which was 95% alcohol with ginger flavoring. He got rid of the ginger with carbon filtration and resold it as vodka, gin etc through Lansky's bootlegging operations. Meyer Lansky was so well connected that when he was in prison at the beginning of WWII the US Navy high command sprung him on the pretext he would be useful in protecting the harbors from saboteurs. Hammer took the money he made from bootlegging and went to the USSR and bought up most of the Romanov's Faberge egg collection and thus bankrolled the commies. In gratitude they gave him marketing rights to the USSR's oil production and export licenses for the Faberge Eggs. The corporation was Occidental Petroleum and he became fantastically rich and was also the paymaster for the KGB bankrolling the KGB ops in the US and the rest of the western hemisphere from the profits off the oil sales until the end of his life in 1990. He also ran Gore Sr. who worked for Occidental before his election to the Senate and was instrumental in Gore Jr. getting into the senate and also contributed to Nixon's campaign. Any missing pieces would most likely be in the hands of the Hammer family passed down off the books so as not to incur any estate taxes.

Putin would just shove them up his ass while molesting a little boy, anyway, so maybe it's good that some are gone.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that they walked out the door in somebody's pocket.

With so many national treasures looted from other countries currently in Russian hands I say we call it a draw.

Interesting theory, but I'd bet that the Rothschild family, who had more than a passing interest in seeing the Czar overthrown, are keeping these trinkets as "mementos" of the successful revolution.

IF they're still around, it's not as "Russia's Crown Jewels" anymore. Those nice big diamonds have all been sliced & diced into something smaller and easier to sell, and all that gold melted into something untraceably ingot-shaped. Stalin likely sold them back before WWII when he needed money. Nobody's got the Romanov Jewels anymore, but I'd bet a lot of somebodys have nice WWII-era rings and whatnot that used to be them.

pit and pendulum: Ninotchka took 'em.

Ninotchka took 'em?

On the contrary, she was in Paris trying to save Soviet Jewelry.
